WASHINGTON

Rep. Devin Nunes used political donations to pay for nearly $15,000 in tickets to Boston Celtics basketball games as well as winery tours and lavish trips to Las Vegas, according to reports from the Federal Election Commission and two nonpartisan watchdog groups.

Nunes, R-Calif., has reportedly been a Celtics fan since high school, though he grew up in Tulare, California. He used the money from his political action committee last year on three occasions to buy tickets.

His PAC also spent about $42,741 since 2013 on catering, site rentals, hotels and meals in Las Vegas. The most recent instance was March 9, when the PAC spent $7,229 at seven different restaurants and hotels in Las Vegas

More expenditures at the link. I for one am shocked that an upstanding guy like Devin Nunes would use campaign funds for personal gains.

Edit: Adding this part about the legality as requested.

The House Ethics Committee bans the use of leadership PACs for personal use, though it's rarely enforced. The Federal Elections Commission has not issued clear directives on whether the funds can be used for personal matters.

Fucking scum. I hope Republican citizens are happy that so many of their politicians are using their donations and tax dollars to entertain themselves rather than improve the country. Or maybe they're just happy with being used as long as people like Nunes make life worse for minorities.

Im fairly sure the big donors know full and well that their money gets spent on bullshit.

I'd wager more Republicans would rather the rules be changed to allow frivolous spending than actually holding people accountable.

My campaign finance law is a little rusty. Is this illegal? Is it illegal if he slaps a "business trip" label on the expense?

Andrew Janz better beat the drum on this before November, remind CA-22 where their taxpayers' money is going.

Him being a Celtics is more damaging to him than this spending. Californians will not like that no matter the aisle.

Can't enforce this shit cuz Citizens United hangs over our heads

Really only the people whose money he squandered have to find some way to hold him accountable... even they even care to

It would be a far more effective message if they'd enforce serious consequences on the corruption within their own ranks. This is what bothers me so much, the wanton hypocrisy and looking the other way. It's just not right.

This puts some pep in my step. Nunes is one of the slimiest republicans in congress. I hope he gets dragged out of congress kicking and screaming.

You guys have no idea how much of a piece of shit this guy really is. He is the rep for the district of one of my friends. He and 7 other Muslim constituents flew all the way to DC for the Muslim lobbying day at the capital and he refused to meet with any of them. This didn't happen to anybody else.

Conservatives: "That saintly politician wasting our donated money on lavish goods and liberal elitist NBA entertainment just makes him smart"
Dipshits: "We're conservatives."

OR
His supporters will either say "Fake News!" or "at least he's sticking it to those libs!" and nothing will change.

Indeed, and I'm worried it will be a literal lesser of two corrupt evils here again :\

yes, the 'culture of corruption' message that Dems campaigned on in 2006 is being deployed again this year.

Good to hear.

This seemed kind of relevant. But let the outrage fly.

The House Ethics Committee bans the use of leadership PACs for personal use, though it's rarely enforced. The Federal Elections Commission has not issued clear directives on whether the funds can be used for personal matters.

Nunes has never faced a competitive election. Of course he isn't spending the money campaigning. The people who bought him knew where this money was going

If these last two years have revealed anything, its that people in government really are above the law. A lot of things that I had assumed were "illegal" to do are actually just ethical guidelines they are recommended to follow, but without any real punishment for not following them. Or some of them are actual law for other people that they had written themselves as exempt from.

They can do whatever they want and there is really no recourse other than to wait their term our and HOPE that the electorate does there job in getting the shitbags out.

They want to live this life and think it will come to them if they support their side enough, a bunch of spiteful human beings is what supports these sort of assholes.
