It's great, op. Lots of content and the best Ys soundtrack since Oath. Also the PC port is workable now.
It's really good i recommend the PC version it's by far the best version now that everything is fixed (even annoying things like the skill slowdowns present in the console release where fixed in the pc version) it looks and runs fantastic in 4k/60fps.

Any other PC impressions? The analog controller thing was fixed? No crashes? I've been considering getting it on PS4, which is a pretty rare thing for me, but these are honestly the first positive words I've heard about the PC port.

It's shit. I only played before that patch, but the combat is repetitive and dull, and the music is like jabbing needles into your ears for 50 hours or so. One of the most overrated games of all time.

Save yourself.

I'm enjoying it 20 hours in, but yeah over time it's starting to lose it's luster, starting to feel repeptitive in combat.

If I stop now I feel that I got my money's worth in the game.

It's one of the better games this year, easily a top tier action rpg.

Just a really fun game.

Should I start on normal or hard? I*m a pretty seasoned RPG player but as I said unfamiliar with Ys.

Good luck

i got my ass kicked in nightmare so hard i had to take a week off the game. Finished on hard. Mileage may vary.

Definitely easier. But it also rewards mistakes with instant death on nightmare.

You can take a few hits on hard. So i swallowed my pride and did my first playtrough on hard.

I've never played any Ys game but I do like Japanese action RPGs with 60 FPS and I enjoy grinding to some extent. I wish it wasn't 60 bucks but if you all tell me I should get it, I might.

How fun is the combat?

It's my 1st Y's game and I like it. It's hack and slash where you alternate between 3 characters on the fly like for paper, rock scissors type attacks e.g. enemy types are either weak to slash, pierce or smash.

I enjoyed it more than XC2. Slick fast responsive and no nonsense combat that doesn't have 5848586 systems to learn with a cluttered UI.

Thinking about grabbing this either for Switch or PS4. I like the handheld idea and I don't think I care that much if it's only 30fps, but I do care about performance drops and missing effects. Would the Switch version still be a safe buy?

Yes. Even though the Switch version does have some performance drops it never reaches a point of unplayable. PS4 version may be the superior version in terms of visual fidelity and performance, but the Switch version with the convenience of handheld play, which appears to be your interest, is perfectly acceptable and highly enjoyable. Go for it.

I seriously don't know how folks can say Ys II is better than Ys I. Waaay too much of a slog for me.

I know right?

YS 2 biggest issue is that the inclusion of the fireball completely changes the balance of the game, to the point that some enemies are way too hard to kill without it but is also incredible slow to do.

Meanwhile since YS 1 solely revolves around the bump combat, is more fast paced

I'm playing on Switch and despite the weird shimmer (I assume due to scaling resolution) and it running 30fps vs 60fps, it has not hampered my enjoyment one bit. I much prefer the portability, playing on the bed, couch, yard, (toilet) wherever.

I've been waiting for it to be on sale, but I'm good since I'm playing Oath in Felghana for the first time. It's a bit hard but fun. Great soundtrack too!

It's a Ys party based game that I actually finished, so it is freakishly good.

Finally justified the concept.

It ran perfectly for me after the last couple patches. I do have a powerful PC so not sure if I'm just brute forcing certain things.

My main issue was that they separated the endings. To get the good ending you have to do some sidequests to increase your rank and also find all castaways. I had no problem with sidequests, but I failed to find 3 castaways and got the normal ending. I spent hours searching everywhere on the map but problem was that as the story progressed game was locking you out of the map and you could not venture elsewhere with the newly gained abilities. Same for Dana's story. That island was very confusing to navigate and look for castaways.
I prefered Tokyo Xanadu story, where the real ending was in a lengthy extra chapter, after completing the main game.

I'll play Celcetta when it releases

This issues you mention have all been patched out. According to staff I've talked to and internal testing it's smooth sailing if you've updated your drivers to latest version.

This is a blasphemous travesty that has no place in this reality.

Yeah they fixed everything you mentioned and more most things you read where probably from the release they improved the game a lot since then, port is top notch now and by far the best version out atm be sure to get the
High Quality Music mod https://www.nexusmods.com/ysviii/mods/1 it replaces the low quality music files, with higher quality ones from the ost since the ones included are a bit low quality but that's also true for the console releases.

It's great. The story is incredibly boring though, just fast forward through it all.

Edit: Memories of Celceta most definitely isn't a better game lol.

It's fucking amazing. They nailed everything they went for. The exploration is top notch and the combat is immensely satisfying. There's even some minor base building à la Suikoden ffs. The bar is really high for Ys 9. Long live Falcom!
