I know it's a running joke at this point that Half-Life 3 or episode 3 will never come out, but I want to ask anyway. The franchise has been dormant now for quite some time, but Valve is very aware that people want a conclusion to the story, right? So, what's the holdup? Do we think they are working on it? That it will ever release?

I want to get some opinions on the whole subject.

I think we'll get some sort of Half Life game at some point but I don't expect the next game to be Episode 3 or some kind of continuation of the same story.

At this point it would just be another generic FPS.

The world has changed a lot since 2004. Everything Half-Life did 15+ years ago no longer stands out.

Valve moved away from single player games and with that Half Life is simply going to be unfinished forever. The core talent behind the games appear to be gone - many of whom seem just as frustated as us. The leaked story from Laidlaw is all the closure we'll get.

They'll keep skirting around it. I expect whenever they come out with a new Sci-Fi IP, there will be tangential connections to the HL universe, but I think they're to scared to touch it directly.

Nobody is going to want a spin-off of Half-Life before we get the proper Half-Life 3 or Episode 3, which will never happen.

Agreed. Spinoffs to seemingly dead IP's have been incredibly poorly recieved in the past. Look at Metal Gear Survive or Metroid Prime Federation Force.

No. Its gone on too long, it would NEVER live up to the hype and would not benefit Valve at this point. Games have progressed so much in the time since Half life 2, they would have to be updating it and putting something new and innovative in it from when it was originally started.

Not a chance, valve is a money grubbing husk of old men now. They can't do games.

Right? Like, you end Ep2 on the biggest cliffhanger imaginable for the Half-Life story you could think of, then the game to follow it up is 'Return to Ravenholm,' an online-only mobile card game.

I don't think we'll ever see a sequel to the existing games.

There just might be the possibility of a reboot however. The Half-Life story is not that complex or deep and is arguably dated or stale.

There is great potential in starting over from scratch and telling a coherent story not built around the originally planned episodic structure.

Yes, but if it'll be a Valve game, or any good, is totally up in the air. I wouldn't expect it anytime soon. I wouldn't be shocked if it gets picked up decades from now in a bargain-bin IP sale.

After the fanfiction style plot dump of episode 3, no. Not a chance. As for spin offs, the only one I feel would be accepted by fans at all is Portal 3 and even that has 0 chance of ever happening as well.

Hell what I want is Portal 3 that would also end Half Life's story. Itll never happen though.

Like from a purely business perspective valve would gain so much by making it or hiring someone to make it.

Idk why this has played out this way. Seems like they dropped it after Portal 2 since they were kinda tying the two together

It's truly heartbreaking but yeah I believe it's dead. Everyone involved has moved on. It's tragic because they could've finished this franchise off with one more game if they provided a conclusive ending. I forget a lot about the games I play but that final shot of EP2 is burned into my memory. Of course they lost interest and completely dropped singleplayer, but it's so unfortunate to leave your breakout franchise in the ditch like that. I don't get why they never gave it to another studio if they didn't want to be bothered themselves.

I expect a comic book eventually. That seems to be Valve's primary storytelling medium now.

Valve is too busy making money with Steam, they ain't got time to make new games.

I legitimately don't think we'll ever see a AAA single player offline game developed by Valve ever again.

Valve sell hats now and make more money doing that than they ever did making games.

At least we know what the story of HL3 would have been, we can all move on now.

I think so. I think it will come out to either launch some new platform (Steam 2) or some new tech (not necessarily VR).

Valve seems to like money, so yes, of course they will make a new half life at some point.

The quality of games since HL2 Ep2 has skyrocketed. Valve would have to make an absolutely smashing game compared to HL2 Ep2 to be comparable to today's standards.

Path of least resistance is that Valve won't bother with a HL3 title ever. They don't have it in them anymore, quality-wise.

I don't think so. But even then, I feel like it will never live up to people's expectations, so what's the point?

All signs so far would point to a 'No' for me. I mean, they've done nothing to tell me that anything related to HL will ever see the light of day again. I'd love to be wrong, but I have yet to see anything showing this.

Nope. It ain't happening. I waited a decade. No. More than a decade at this point. Imagine waiting that long, year after year only to not hear anything. Companies that want to make games want to be in Valve shoes so they can unlimited resources to make games. Valve wants to do virtual economies, and hardware.

If it ever shows up, it will a mod in form like Black Mesa.

Would you say it pierced your memory?

I honestly think those games have aged horribly. Harder and harder to convince people to try them out because they honestly look and feel very dated. The art style doesn't help either
