Saw some gameplay of Bomb Chicken and it looks super charming - really looking forward to it. It's got a puzzle/twitch platformer vibe to it, with some gorgeous animation.

Why, no PC? Even if you just had a relatively recent laptop, you can play the vast majority of indie games. You don't need some crazy PC gaming set-up to enjoy indie games

I dont play on PC anymore.. I have just 5 year old laptop (or older, not sure) with poor hardware in it. and the third reason - I enjoy being comfortable while playing (3DS, Switch, PS4 on big tv).... and finally: I dont want to switch between keyboard, PS4/XBOX controllers and handhelds controllers on switch/3DS.. i had one more reason but I already forgot what it was lol.

I remember really liking this on XBLA
I'm always a little surprised when an Xbox Live Indie Game shows up years later on Steam.

I do always look for Bennu to see a rerelease on Steam. It's available for free online but I always hope to see them make an official release for sale. Maybe with some updates? Just looked them up and apparently they're making something called Outsider.

Urban Space Squirrels was another I thought was decent for an XBLIG. Oh, and CarneyVale Showtime! I'd play that again.

Ambition of the Slimes is probably the biggest surprise I found this year. Still playing it daily, just made a pretty big breakthrough in a level, which allowed me to unlock a very useful slime to tackle some higher difficulties.

I put about 80 or so hours into it on PS4 at release, think I'm gonna pick it up again on PC. The changes look really good, QoL stuff like more ammo drops and being able to move faster when out of combat looks to alleviate some of my previous issues with it.

Are there any upcoming colony/management (or that sort of genre, at least) games that have Z-levels? I keep thinking i saw a trailer with a game that showed them recently and was surprised by that inclusion, but i have absolutely no idea what game it was.

The Spectrum Retreat was really good. A bit of Black Mirror trickery combined with really smart and devious puzzles.
Yes agreed. Covered it in today's Weekly. Speaking of which!

8. Escape from Tethys
While the combat is a challenge, it's certainly not poorly designed. The first boss makes that immediately clear. As you watch and listen for cues, you'll learn the points at which you need to jump around hazards, before closing in on him to drain some life.
7. Mars or Die!
The central loop is engaging and I like having active control of an avatar on the battlefield. Furthermore, the bonus goals felt just out of reach in a way that offered a challenge and kept pulling me back in for one more try.
6. Mindball Play
While this makes a great local and online multiplayer game with friends, the story mode is surprisingly well-considered here. Each race has a fun intro blurb that tells a story while introducing mechanics: like McCheaty finding an illegal stash of pickups.
5. The Spiral Scouts
In addition to the fun art and the well-designed puzzles, the music is excellent as well. Given the quality of presentation and gameplay, I'd argue that the asking price of $10 is on the low side for The Spiral Scouts.
4. Pato Box
The boxing gameplay emphasizes pattern memorization like Punch-Out!!, but turns the silly up to 11 by incorporating lasers, electric charges, axes, and food. This has made each fight novel – I look forward to each fight and it makes pattern discovery a continuous effort.
3. Danger Zone 2
These variables ensure that the levels have been authored in such a way that each can have something that makes it unique. Whether it's the car you're driving, the secondary objectives, the track or the layout of the bonuses.
2. Indie Pogo
While Indie Pogo does have a lower barrier to entry, each character in this mega cross-over event is incredibly unique – ensuring a high skill ceiling. My favorite, Penelope, is all about fierce stage control.
1. The Spectrum Retreat
This games spins a beautiful and mysterious tale about a guest unwittingly kidnapped by the hotel as they struggle to recollect their past – warts and all.

I'd like to make the suggestion that VR games be labeled as such when added to this thread, if it's not too much trouble. I've found a few games now that pique my interest but then I find out they're VR games and I lose all interest.

At any rate, I really appreciate the effort put into this thread. I check in on it all the time.

The list in the OP shouldnt contain any VR games, as I filter them out for the monthly list.
If Kode can label them automatically, that would help me too though :P

Sorry for the double post - I forgot to update this thread with my reviews including one giveaway ending tomorrow. The giveaway is on the Space Captain McCallery video. I have 4 copies of Ashi: Lake of Light and 4 of Ice Caves of Europa plus one winner will get Space Captain also.

Space Captain McCallery Episode 1: Crash Landing is a deliciously retro action adventure fusion. You play as a captain that has been kicked off his own spaceship. His crew mutinied, leaving him with nothing but an escape pod. Having crash landed on an alien planet, the captain lacks even sustenance. Left to his own devices, his hunger is getting the best of him and he has only his bare hands to take on the hostile wildlife.

Tutorialization is light so you essentially jump right in to harvesting and eating alien plants. This will fill your hunger meter. When you get too hungry, your movement speed is slowed and you have a little over a minute to eat something before you die. Once you have your first meal, you get a taste for your main methods of traversal. You can't jump, but you have a fixed length dash. This will let you cross small gaps or just cover ground quicker. But the bottomless pits around you will keep you in check if you try to abuse it. This is key when it comes to moving around when hungry – you can still dash so you'll have to choose between a safe, slow walk or a perilous, speedy dash to get you to your next meal. Though, to be honest, I never ran out of plants and was rarely hungry for long.

So you have food and a handle on controls. Next, you find a nearby save point and drop down to the platform below. A few meters away: your first combat encounter. The Zelda-like lock on allows you to focus on an enemy and strafe around it. Without your trusty firearm, you can punch the incoming alien insects or hurl a boulder. Either way, you'll have to dance around them to avoid their lunges. This style of combat was entertaining, and even more so once you acquire a space gun later on. Sometimes, the number of enemies would get overwhelming and they'd frustratingly push me off a ledge. But the load time back to the save point was instant and if I came back with a game plan, I could pick off enemies pretty safely.

My favorite part of this game are the cave sections that feel like they're halfway between Zelda II caves and Zelda dungeons. There are twisting pathways, mushrooms that will cause you to hallucinate, and light puzzle and platforming challenges. At the end of it, you exit a different way than you came in – bringing you to a new part of the overworld. As much as I enjoyed these mini-dungeons, I would have loved for them to be meatier. I felt like they were just getting special as the game came to a close. To that end, I'm extremely interested to see what's next for Space Captain McCallery.

As an introductory episode, this game stands on its own but more importantly, it showcases massive potential. The fusion of exploration, survival and action provided good pacing. Furthmore, the cave sections really felt like I was going deeper and deeper into foreign and hostile territory. The frightful music was an appropriate backdrop to this intentionally pulpy atmosphere. And of course, the graphics. You can't ignore the low poly look combined with the low resolution textures to make for a true PS1/N64 feel. Space Captain McCallery Episode 1: Crash Landing feels like it can sit alongside Brave Fencer Musashi and Jet Force Gemini as a novel acion adventure, but it will leave you wanting more. Hopefully it's a taste of more adventures to come.

Even if you haven't played Lumines, you probably know a lot about it. For instance, you've probably heard that its impact to a player's PSP library was analogous to Tetris on the Game Boy. Or perhaps, you've heard about its designer, Tetsuya Mizuguchi, and his increasing penchant for creating trippy and synesthetic experiences. Well that's me – I've heard all these things and I've even given Lumines a try, but I never managed to go headlong into a true session, much less get halfway decent at the game. In finally learning how to play Lumines, I realized why I waited so long. As a lifelong Tetris fan, I've had to uncoil the parts of my brain that made any other falling block game look like Braille. This is about my journey to feel competent at Lumines.

LUMINES REMASTERED is the entry in question. It's an HD remake of the original Lumines for PSP. While it would be nice to have high definition visuals of Vita's Lumines: Electronic Symphony, I welcome the more simplistic gameplay of the original. No need to worry about chain blocks, shuffle blocks or avatar abilities. Just the basics: you can move or rotate a 2x2 block until it's placed on the playfield; each cell in the block can only be 1 of 2 colors; meanwhile a line sweeps across the field, scanning for and clearing 2x2 areas of the same color. These clearable squares are allowed to overlap (e.g. a 3x2 area of one color counts as 2 squares). Finally, once a cell is cleared, any cells above it will fall to occupy the newly emptied space.

This gameplay is the meat and potatoes of the Challenge mode. I also want to address the Time Attack, Puzzle, and Mission modes since they all fed into each other in a "deliberate practice" sort of way. This was perfect for me – a novice that wanted to up their game quickly.

Time Attack isolates speed as an area of improvement. How many clears can you get in 60, 180 or 300 seconds? Puzzle mode asks you to make weird shapes. For me, this gave me better confidence in my ability to manipulate blocks into a desired format. Mission mode acts as an extension to the tutorial. It has 50 short objectives that will help you learn some tricks of the trade if you can manage to complete them. These can get pretty tough, so I did enlist the help of some YouTube videos, so I could learn the lesson and unlock the next set. Together, these allowed me to hone specific toolsets and be better suited for the general Challenge mode, where I could put my skills to the test.

These modes made LUMINES REMASTERED a great entry point for a newbie to the series. Conversely, I'm sure a proficient player would be content with quickly doing well enough in the Basic Challenge mode to unlock Shuffle and Endless – modes that would be more suited to those same experts. The former shuffles the playlist of music and skins for its session. And the latter is just as it sounds – play forever. I never got good enough to unlock Endless, myself. I was pretty proud however, of the fact that I started by struggling to make it to level 10 (of 100) in Basic, but am now reaching 30 comfortably and continuing to improve.

Enjoying this review copy as much as I was, I went ahead and bought it on the Switch. Here I noticed some minor but, nagging issues. Control options were limited and I couldn't use analog stick to shift the falling blocks in handheld mode. Also in handheld mode, the framerate would sometimes drop; especially in the transition to a new skin. This would be particularly frustrating if it ate an input just before I placed a piece. This caused me to look at the PC version more closely where I then noticed occasional screen tearing, a locked 720p resolution and a lack of mouse controls for the menu. Granted, I didn't notice these until closer inspection, but it's a bit frustrating nonetheless. My final nagging complaint is the load times, particularly between objectives in Puzzle and Mission mode. The levels are designed to last under a minute so it was a pain to endure even short load times between them.

Even with my complaints, I'm happy with my purchase and can wholeheartedly recommend this game. It's a pleasure to fire up LUMINES REMASTERED and lose myself to its trance-inducing gameplay. Furthermore, the robust set of modes should be enough to please rookie and veteran players alike. As I write this, my 5 year old son is playing it for the first time literally ooh-ing and aah-ing to himself. Meanwhile, I can't wait to hit level 40. This will likely be a daily play for me. At least until Tetris Effect drops.

Wired - Free (PC)
giphy.gif

Wire up electrical circuits and make your way through a derelict building to keep your appointment with a mysterious professor who lives at the top.

I enjoyed this a lot! It's a really cool take on puzzle games that also serves to educated people on the basic theories behind current, voltage, and amperage. As someone with knowledge of wiring audio systems, I really liked how it attempted to explain everything via the different concrete puzzle elements. With some puzzles there was a hint system, which I caved and resorted to once, but by the end I was flying through many of the puzzles pretty quickly. Visually its a bit bland and rough, but there was an intriguing story throughout, and a nice evolution to the puzzles. I also didn't expect around 6 hours of gameplay out of a free game.

Liminal was okay as well.

New Monday means new Weekly:

7. Mugsters
Mugsters is a beautiful, action-packed, destruction sandbox. The art style immediately drew me in: the low poly style, replete with saturated colors and silly animations are something to behold.
6. Gotcha Racing 2nd
The tracks, and opponent cars therein, were a puzzle to be solved. And the solution was, in fact, an overpowered car that you can scrounge from the parts in your garage.
5. Ice Caves of Europa
Between the well-written narrative and the unconventional flight gameplay, Ice Caves of Europa is delivering on their design goal of challenging "your reflexes and your mind".
4. The Path of Motus
The charming and slightly awkward art and soundscapes mesh well with the feeling of overcoming bullies to reach your dreams. All told, The Path of Motus is a truly touching game that's well worth your time.
3. Bomb Chicken
Just as with bombs being a multifaceted resource, the designers crammed a lot of interesting ideas into the level design. So while the early levels aren't challenging, it's always fun to see what new obstacle awaits you in the next room.
2. Impulsion
Impulsion gave me one of my favorite feelings: approaching the end of a level, muttering "not good enough" under my breath, hitting the retry button and instantly being transported back to the beginning of the stage.
1. MOTHERGUNSHIP
Mothergunship kicks in the door, waves the four-four and makes you say "poppa don't hit me no more."

Today's Games:
