So i met my third character, who spent his entire intro doing the "I work alone!" thing, then basically said to me "You want to join me? ok!". Nice :p
Yeah, Therion's story is a little hilarious if he's not the first character.

Olberic: A child has been kidnapped, join me for a daring assault on the bandit's base!

Cyrus: A rogue scholar has stolen a precious book! Help me confront him and recover the lost knowledge!

Therion: I wanna steal shit from that house. Anyone else want to help?

Alfyn's Concoct + everyone with Cleric's Saving Grace support skill = shield breaker galore + we're never dying!

Therion makes little sense so far in how everything is framed but the core story about trust/losing trust is nice. But maybe having thievery be the backdrop wasn't the smartest idea given so many weird inconsistencies are popping up.

If they wanted to do the whole thievery thing though maybe giving Therion a certain reputation as a thief could have helped without changing the story too much maybe. Like how Olberic is known as the unbending blade, giving Therion more of a robin hood rep might have eased over the disconnect.

Haha, yeah. I feel like nobody would have taken his offer to help him steal stuff just because. Olberic, no. H'aanit, no. Alfyn, no. Cyrus, no. Ophilia, hell no.

Even Tressa who has no real life experience had a moment in her first chapter where she says stealing is wrong.

Do you still get xp / etc for capturing a monster? Additionally has anyone caught a cait and is it worth bothering?

Someone should draw a comic where Tressa steps into a new town and is bewildered by its shops and locales, but then sees Therion go from person to person to pickpocket them and frowns.

the world is quite linear (so far)
I think the level design is incredible, this is the most cohesive world I've seen in a 2D rpg. There is no world map roaming, it's mind blowing.
Mother 2 / Pokémon, that don't have any world map roaming and also have really good level design, are linear. But Octopath Traveler is not. From almost each town you have the choice between 3 roads, the world is really really well designed.
I can't stop to dream of a new Paper Mario with no world map (Color Splash's island feel very cohesive, but you navigate via a world map) but with this kind of world design.

So knowing I can keep the passive abilities now I'm trying Merchant/Dancer, Hunter/Warrior, Scholar/Cleric, and Alchemist/Thief for my second party atm.

Hope that turns out.

Also looking forward to getting Cyrus/Alfyn up. I've left most of the sidequests undone because they seemed interconnected by way of path actions and, well, I had neither inquire nor scrutinize in my original party.

the HELP Menu.
heads up for anyone looking for a good ally to Guide/Allure, I've got two recommendations.

First and foremost is the Luckless Sellsword, found in Noblecourt, outside the tavern, who bemoans the three companions that betrayed him. his signature ability is itself gravely powerful, Full Enfeeblement, which strikes all enemies with a loss of strength and defense for both physical and elemental attacks! he likes to do it too, so you can pretty much shut down a boss's power for a long time with just one summoning! he can also strike like the lightning, dealing two spear blows and giving everyone a speed boost! he is immensely useful!

another is a particular drunk, who's location escapes me at the moment, has a skill with "Breath" in the title, in which he inflicts confusion, blindness, and poison to all his opponents, quite useful in the right circumstances!

the right use of these path actions and talents can be of immeasurable worth! heck, once you fully unlock Alfyn's apothecary skill set, he can make his single target Concoct's work on everyone, which is no doubt helpful when one of them provides 4 BP, and the Curious Concocts have such a bevy of helpful effects!

I tried a max level Bewildering Grace last night, and got fucked hard. Everyone got poisoned and muted, and Ophilia lost all her SP. I relied on healing items and soulstones to finish the fight.
You can wipe your party with that skill. I used it once and everyone was reduced to 1 hp, attack / defence reduced, and poisoned. At least I got JPx2! Thankfully I killed the enemy that turn or else I'd have wiped. If I'd got a ground explosion after the HP reduction that would have wiped me too.

I reckon if you wanna try your luck while farming in the world, it's best to save it for when you know you'll finish the fight on that turn. That way if you get a bad roll you can just sneeze on the enemy and peace out.

I can assure you I never saved before stealing nor did I steal any 3-8%.
To bad we can't save videos on the Switch. It could help to solve your case.

However, my bad, I thought you were talking chapter 1. I did chapter 2 of only the rogue characters. So I dont know the boss itself.
Is it using elemental attacks or something ?

Can I suggest you to bribe a dancer for something like 3k of money or less with Tressa ? It often makes the enemy sleep/be poisoned. Could help ?
Maybe you already did.

I have Merchant sub on Primrose and discovered that recently. Got me out of a dangerous situation in very high level area.
I think it was mostly just bad luck that they all did it in a row. A move called sideswipe or something that hits every character. The bosses hit for like 700 on some of the ones with less defense and then his two goons popped out of break and did it too. Wasn't aware they even had it until that point.

Only did two so far but he's way more challenging than Cyrus's which I beat first try. I think he has an instant death skill too. Doesn't help that he's weak to wind and light which are both shit.

Loved the premise though. That town music is simply haunting.

I need this, and also

"Hey, I couldn't, uh, didn't steal everything! You can go buy something from those two!"
"My parents?"

Was this confirmed?

The first letter of the 8 protagonists spells out OCTOPATH. Do the first letters of the 8 antagonists spell TRAVELER?

Not enough hours in the day to play this game. Why wouldn't it have come up when I was in HS?

back when I probably wouldn't have been able to afford a Switch ;P

Are there images floating around of characters' subjob costumes? Only aesthetics matter when it comes to giving a character a second job.

That's awesome! I'll have to check them out. Eliza, the Knight that makes some appearances in Ophilia and H'aanit's quests, is also really good. She has a buff that gives your whole party a boost in attack, defense, magic attack, and magic defense for 3 turns. She also dishes out some very respectable damage.

I'm interested in hearing about any other really good summons people find.

so the Combo Cyrus + Dancer makes him an impressive elemental lord while either able to buff himself or others when needed or during dead rounds.

I'm happy I chose the Nuker as my first guy.
Once you recruited more people and geared them, you can easily set up your first turn to have Cyrus cast a buffed, fully boosted Firaga and nuke them without even needing to break them. You'd need to give the dancer to someone else though or use Primrose.

Anyone know how poison works? Is it percentage of enemy HP or does it scale with your own stats?
I never paid much attention to it but I feel like I saw numbers that were pretty far apart.

I've been mulling over how they could have done this differently, given the characters are so disparate in their motivations and objectives. Would it be better if each character had a longer solo intro, go through a stage where they realize they need help, and then have them cross each other's paths? But then the emphasis would be shifted away from the party dynamic, which really is the meat of the game... so I don't know how to make it work.

They already kind of have the framework to make it work in place- Have the opening of the game be the characters in an inn, swapping stories (ie Chapter 1s) with the group deciding to adventure together at the end of a long night of camaraderie (and maybe a bar fight or two). Then let the actual playable flashback Chapter 1s be triggered at request of the player so you can start adventuring with near a full party but don't have to get bogged down with Chapter 1s one after the other.

The rest could be filled in via skits. Questions on why a certain character archetype would work with their seeming polar opposite are absolutely fertile ground for skits and other interactions that can show character growth throughout the game.

It really kills me that they got so much right with the game (the path actions are absolutely revolutionary IMO) but totally bungled character interactions. The game is just crying out for skits or context or location specific character interactions when exploring the map.

There is one thing that really bothers me about the map design in this game. A lot of the times the exits from areas do not match up to the cardinal directions on the map; this moreso bothers me exiting towns than in fields.

I had a helluva time trying to find Saintsbridge.

Hmmm.. Playable flashback origins with an already established group just chatting. Fill in the details and motivations over the course of the game. I like this workaround.

Just unlocked Star Seer today, and wow that class is OP(and man, that boss battle was no joke). At this rate, I may have all 4 special jobs before I finish all the level 2 story chapters lol.

The support skill that gives you overhealing is amazing.

I wish I had the JP to spare to give it to my whole party.
