I think with the realistic look they would go for making it look more like a super-human feat rather than the video game thing of just skippinng frames of transition animations for canceling animations. They got time to look into making it look better but i won't fret it impacting the gameplay that much.

"Wild" Dante is now part of my favorite "Japanese devs use fun descriptors for their characters" with Punished Venom Snake.

Hype, but I'm a bit nervous on the "no motion canceling."

I don't play Devil May Cry for photorealism. I'm here for CRAZY.

It's going to be just like street fighter V

the key is to cancel the body animations but not the clothing artifacts, hair, scarfs and such.

It tricks the eyes into thinking there was a continuous flow , but it reality body joint animations were cut away.

Also body motion blur will play a big role in this process.

Is it just pure inspiration or is the game actually set in London, as parts of that trailer looked like both Piccadilly Square and Tower Bridge.

It's not really like SFV:
For example, when you turn around you'll feel the weight behind the character movement. However, this brings another problem of having a slower response. The team struggled in finding a way to keep the responsiveness while giving it a more photorealistic appearance.
You will feel the change in gameplay, it's not just a visual change.

No animation cancel just sounds like it's their take on the goat Ninja Gaiden. Looking forward to it.

Hmm, I had a feeling Nico and "V" were connected in some way, due to the tats. Definitely interested in seeing how that goes.

For everything else, I'm just opting to trust Itsuno practically unconditionally. He and his team got this.

I will reserve judgement until I see the final game

Never forget, jump cancelling was originally a glitch.

I'm probably one of few one who saw that line about not skipping animation and thought yes, sounds awesome XD. Animation along with combat of course is everything in games for me, one of the main reasons I love Nier so much for instance is the amazing animations during combat, not only do they look so good but they make the game feel so good to play.

^ Automata's combat animations are a feast for the eyes. Likewise, I have faith in DMC playing as good as it looks.

What if V is Nico's lover/boyfriend (who used to work at a tattoo parlor) trying to help Nero (Nico's partner in crime) with his demon hunting job, in order to capture Nico's heart and set up for that perfect moment to propose to her?

  • The background music changes as you pull off combos. For example it'll change to a B melody then to a C melody to hype things up.
  • That means unless you do something cool, you might get stuck on a repeat of the A melody.

Capcom's goal is to make Devil May Cry 5 the peak of action games in the Heisei period (1989 to ~April 2019)

  • Previously, the focus was on response so players were able to motion cancel, but for Devil May Cry 5 it'll take the input but it won't skip through animation.
  • The developers say that if you could do the same thing (motion skipping) as before but with the photorealistic quality of Devil May Cry 5, it would look strange. This is something Capcom is calling "the uncanny valley of action."

I'm sure it'll be fine. Jump canceling is not something that was randomly added into the games. If you read the interviews, it was purposedly set in there. I think what this means is that it will be smoother and not janky like previous games. Considering they've said it will be the fastest DMC yet, perhaps it will mean speeding the animations up so it doesn't look janky and the animation would finish up faster, especially with turbo mode on. But this will surely be answered in Gamescom so I guess we'll have to wait to know for sure.

It wasn't. That's an oft-repeated misconception. At least, we don't have confirmation that it was one. Other staff behind DMC1 said that it was added in by the programmers, which seems more likely.

Tries a few of these games but never could get into them. My favourite was DMC2 but never completed it at the time due to work/life constraints in those days!

Anywhoo, played the DMC4 on PS3 a couple of weeks ago and still not feeling it - feels like move to an arena bit and spawn enemies, rinse and repeat. Hmmm... strangely looking forward to this new one though - just wish it had more bigger set pieces like old GOW games and if it did would replace that old GOW formula perfectly for me.

It's probably too difficult compared to GOW when it geta going but I always felt it was more button mashy probably became it was more complex than GOW and the only way I can play it.

Maybe this will play better for casual noon like me!

Although it isn't set in London it looks London as fuk

Which is such a funny idea for a setting for a DMC game.

Come to think of it Ninja Gaiden 3 had a pretty good take on London in its opening.

WRT to the stuff with animation cancelling, is it just that when we cancel out the thing we cancel into will have an animation that's context appropriate? It's hard to understand even from those gifs and screenshots (everything is just very dark and blue, visibility ain't great so far in existing gameplay bits)

Yeah it's not a glitch, more like an exploit. It's in there to facilitate the fast gameplay but it's just taken to an extreme extent by people like Donguri.

In the DMC3 high-level gameplay clips you get on the disc there's some very basic jump-cancelling. Enemy step is always something that's been programmed in.

I will admit I'm not a huge fan of the very high-level jump-cancel stuff with Dante cause I just think it looks really dumb, but I'm glad also that the game is fast and responsive enough to allow it. Without cancelling you just get turgid crap like DMC2 where you get smacked around really easily when going in with your sword (an extreme example but I'm sure that that game had no cancelling whatsoever)

DMC2 follows the exact same formula. 4 at the very least has extended platforming and puzzle sequences, which 2 does not to the same degree.

It was an intended feature on the designers' part in 3 and 4. From what we know it doesn't seem to have been intentional on the part of Kamiya or the two designers in DMC1.

Yeah, we talked about this before, and we largely agree. V is either Nico's a) brother, b) lover or c) some other type of tie (which could have a variety of implications, especially if the idea that Agnus is her Daddy ends up being true).

Either way, I like that it likely gives Nico more due cause to be involved in the story than just being Nero's tag-along and someone who hooks him up with cool shit.

You can definitely get animation smooth with responsiveness. Uncharted games and TLOU and now future with TLOU2 (to an entirely new degree) definitely prove that.

I wonder what kind of animation engine they have behind it.

The Calibur gif is already altered from DMC4. It kinda keeps going despite getting the jump cancel in. The game still definitely 100% has animation cancels (we have analyzed game play already, its not compromised) so nothing to worry about but people used to previous games will definitely feel the difference.

And Capcom keeps hyping this game up... Love it!
