Just a reminder but it's said in the article that this is a interview with Masuda in Famitsu that got out early in some few coments and it'll be out some time

Give it a better lighting engine and stronger textures and you wouldn't notice

Gen 7 were full 3D games
Hmm, how can I put it? Gen 8 needs to have a grander and more intricate world design, where your movement isn't restricted by certain paths.

I think you have never played Breath of the Wild.

The style they use is great but they won't literally just copy and paste it and make it HD. Even Let's Go, while using the XY style, aren't just XY in HD.

My answer was to a person saying that the same graphics in HD would be great on Switch.

I mean, look what happened when Zelda moved to an HD console. There's no reason why Pokemon shouldn't follow suit.

I prefer top down sometimes because ive been spoiled by other games on more powerful systems for draw distance. BOTW just looked bad at times.
Xenoblade 2 was 720p at about 30fps docked and sometimes much lower in portable with some wacky looking anti aliasing. For a game like Pokemon id like clean 1080p @ 60 which I don't see happening if the camera is lowered to being behind the player like some people seem to want.

LGPE being forward compatible makes sense - that way they could make gen 8 not have any gen 1 Pokemon available to catch in the wild and people will at least have a way of getting those Pokemon into the new game.

This conversation of where Pokémon should go is always hilarious to me. We could continue this for pages and pages. All I know is Pokémon is cheap and it still hasn't taken that "big" step in the franchise as far as I'm concerned, like all other big franchises have done.

By grander I hope to see a variety of paths and ways of traversing them. Gen 7's more natural looking environments made the linearity of their world design more apparent.
I just want the routes to be like Unova where it looks like a straight line but you can go off the beaten path to explore :)

o but it seems that you're against the notion that these games need to finally evolve.
I am because that notion implies that what they're doing is wrong and that they need to "evolve" a certain way to be relevant

There's nothing wrong with a top down vision. Either way, it's not like this will change. lol

There isn't but I'm starting to like Pokémon games despite their limited world design and scope.

Honestly I prefer Octopath Traveler HD pixel design more than a HD Sun and Moon with a majorly top down view. Pixel graphics leaves us more to imagine but GameFreak has adopted a cleaner cel shaded art style that expose the series limited world design and scope.

True, but Pokemon is perfect for an open-world title. Don't you agree?

It would take something truly insane to make Pokemon interesting in that format. More open ended routes and nonlinearity are a more realistic option.

Was Persona 5 the big step? What about smaller studios like NIS where Disgaea still looks like that? Id say despite all the hate GF gets with their games they have at least taken a few big steps.

"Inside Pokemon Bank, several new Game IDs have been revealed by a few intrepid software explorers. Props to Michael and Rei Keima for all their investigatory work. They've been exploring the most recent version of Pokemon Bank, teardown style."

"In this app, Game IDs 24 and 25 correspond to Pokemon X and Y, while 26 and 27 are set for Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. IDs 28 and 29 correspond to the Pentagon icon, IE Generation VI (also X and Y, possibly) – but these seem unused at the moment. Game IDs 30 and 31 correspond to Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon, and 32/33 are set for some (unused) Aloha-related sets."

"Pokemon Bank Game ID 34 corresponds with a "Horohoro" icon which is essentially the letter G inside a circle. A Gameboy icon appears to correspond to 7 game IDs, 35, 36, 37, 38, 39, 40, 41. As a total of 7 Pokemon Gameboy games were released, these 7 spots seem to make a whole lot of sense."

"Transfers from the first set of games – those set in the Kanto region, Green (Japan), Blue, Red, and Yellow, include the following text. This text is shown in transfers of Pokemon just after "Nature" and before "Characteristic."

"Game ID 34's icon is the letter G inside a circle. Since the iconography is so incredibly tiny, we cannot reliably compare the G to the G in the Pokemon GO logo. But if I was a betting man, I'd bet it's the same G as we see in GO. It's not clear whether Pokemon GO will be amongst those games able to Deposit and Withdraw from the Pokemon Bank, or if Pokemon GO will only be able to transfer in."

So if Let's Go become a a series and they introduce all other generations, what are they gonna be called?

Marill and Togepi
Plusle and Minon
Riolu and Pachirisu
Zorua and Emolga
Can't even think for Gen 6 and 7 besides the pika clones.

The problem with having the pika clones is that the general public will just think of the them as inferior yo Pikachu but picking any of the starters will leave the other 2 out.

Unless they go legendaries, but let's go Dialga and Palkia just doesn't seem right haha.

Will be interesting.

What they're doing is not wrong from a sales perspective. But refusing to let the series evolve and keeping the games safe makes them look bad from a creative and artistic point of view.

Keep on defending these half-assed games then. I couldn't do it.
Pokémon has evolved somewhat, but nowhere near what it should be. I'm not going to defend Game Freak like it's all good. Grand Thef Auto evolved. Mario evolved. Zelda evolved. Metal Gear evolved. Imagine if Zelda stayed 2D top down today lol.

I don't think Pokémon should be fully open world though like Botw. It should be more like Xenoblade and Dragon Quest with very big areas that may be closed off or not fully connected. In Dragon Quest you can eventually fly everywhere and I like DQ more than Xenoblade for Pokémon.

I honestly think the sequels will be called Let's Go Gold and Let's Go Silver, and you'll have the traditional starter choice.

The series does evolve though. Not evolving the way you want it doesn't mean it hasn't evolved. Come on

I don't have any faith in anything said by Masuda. I have a terrible feeling about gen 8, expecting something dumb like maybe only 40 new Pokémon with all the 150 gen 1 mons available in the map and with bigger encounter rates (this is almost SM actually lol).

So if Let's Go become a a series and they introduce all other generations, what are they gonna be called?
What's the point of making it a series when the only selling point is nostalgia for gen 1 fans? If they made this same game with new Pokémon, the backlash would be huge - it's being protected by Kanto nostalgia.

You won't see DP fans asking for this instead of an actual remake.

Well, I could play Black and White or Sun and Moon today and not notice too many differences. The series has become stale or even worse in certain respects like story and characters.

Clearly they want to pull the casual Pokemon Go crowd over to the next mainline games after Lets Go. Forward compatibility is clearly a way to do that. I'm completely fine with this.

I imagine you'll be disappointed then.

Not everything has to be a massive open world

They're not asking for a massive open world.
But being on par with PS2 RPG would be a nice start.
You know, cities being more than 3 houses and a Pokemon center.

Yeah I want wide open spaces with nothing in them too...

Oh wait...

Hahaha
You're getting that in Pokemon already. Except in tiny corridors. Also good way to show you never touched the games shown here.

Why? Those games in HD look great

I forgot a game's worth was based on its resolution and framerate

Well I expect more given Switch power difference with 3DS.

I mainly refers to scope and scale though, models in Sun Moon (or X/Y non-chibi character models) already looks great in HD.

Edit :

You know, cities being more than 3 houses and a Pokemon center.

This what I'm referring to. I'm not bothered if Pokemon 2019 still retain the same core formula/structure. I just want GF to take advantage of Switch power to better realized the Pokemon world.

I think DQXI is a good comparison (both series still retain it's core formula) ? Would love to see the jump from Sun/Moon to 2019 titles to be like the jump from DQVIII to DQXI .

It could definitely use an evolution. I agree with you. I don't need a massive BoTW style Pokemon game though (although I'd play the shit out of that). What I want is for the world to simply feel a little larger, a lot more detailed, fun to explore and varied in terms of interaction.

Having some deal of choice in a path forward could be wonderful for these games but mainly I just want to feel more like I'm on a grand adventure all my own to be the "very best like no one ever was" in these games. I think the world needs to be a little bigger in order to accomplish that and maybe have more of an emphasis on the journey between towns/cities. I'm not saying it needs to be open world at all, but there are ways to make the design of the region feel more vast.

I actually really like the idea of pokemon visibly roaming in the world like in the Let's Go games and do feel it has potential to add to the feeling of vastness, but the aesthetic of it needs to be better done imo. It looks too game-y, for lack of a better term, in the Let's Go games. I'd love to feel like I was spotting each individual pokemon of the region in its natural habitat. Like a monkey in a tree for example. That context could be fascinating and help the exploration feel fun and rewarding. Having the world be a bit bigger in terms of route size would allow for pokemon to breath on the overworld and not feel crammed in on these tiny routes. This is the sort of thing I want from Pokemon 2019. But they've done everything they can to temper my expectations and say that they are focusing on walking the same path they have for years now, simply on the Switch. I think they literally said, "please don't expect too much" or something along that lines. I'll still enjoy the game, but I would love some change to the feel of exploration and I do think this can be accomplished without going into some big BoTW Pokemon Edition kind of direction.

"As for the 2019 title, we're working with the idea that everyone will be playing on their own Switch. It'll have the same kind of feeling as the previous games on handheld systems."
What does he mean by the first part of this comment? Not everyone will play on their own Switch. I hope they don't think of this as a personal device, but also consider some of us use it as a home console with shared accounts. Maybe it's mistranslated and hopefully this won't prevent things like multiple accounts from having their own save files, or multiplayer.

Excuse me for having some expectations for Gen 8.

i think thats not a fair comparison... but i think the new yokai watch could be something to hope for. Although i really doubt we reach that level of quality
yo-kai-watch-4-nintendo-switch_321211_pn2.jpg

think that yokai focus on a smaller world (as far as i know)
but grafically it would be more doable that thinking BotW pokemon. The thing is that gamefreak makes small jumps between generations... although maybe the letsGo acts as a middle jump (hopefully)

If gen 8 doesn't have co-op and reintroduces random battles it'll be such a massive step down. Really hoping Game Freak doesn't drop the ball here.
