:o Whoa that's pretty cool! I will say that secret post credit ending is pretty mindblowing. Scary as Hell when I first discovered it.
Are you referring to the extra scene with the robot or the even later extra showing one more credit?

I searched for the secret ending and found a video showing a hidden boss in Omnitopia. Never knew about that either, despite having completed the game half a dozen times by now.

And yeah, that SMW ghost thing is pretty amazing. Haven't seen that one before.

Nintendo had crazy rules for NES publishing. Developer were only allowed to release up to five games a year. In response, publishers like Konami founded new companies like Ultra Games to circumvent the rule.

Because Nintendo controlled the production of all cartridges, it was able to enforce strict rules on its third-party developers, which were required to sign a contract by Nintendo that would obligate these parties to develop exclusively for the system, order at least 10,000 cartridges, and only make five games per year.

There's weird graphical issues on the right edge of Super Mario Bros 3.

This happens so SMB3 levels can scroll both horizontally and vertically.

Back then they expected your TV to cut off not only the left side that was already cropped but this side too.

This guy gets more technical about it.

So this isn't exactly a "fact" per-se, but I've been waiting to share this for forever and I don't think there's any reference to it anywhere else on the internet. I talked to a developer on Saint's Row 2 anonymously several years ago and he revealed that he had snuck in a series of quirky cheat codes that very few people in the company knew about, and that they're are all activated by the same combo. I don't remember EXACTLY what the combo was, but I for sure recall it involving rotating one or both joysticks and holding them down (L3/R3 buttons). I remember specifically trying them out on the PC version with a 360 controller and they worked, and I think he had said that it should work on all platforms but I'm not certain.

The effects I for sure recall testing:
  • Entering the cheat while in the "upgrade" screen for the "Demo Derby" mini-game unlocked every upgrade instantly
  • Entering the cheat either before or during the "Insurance Fraud" mini-game made "Ride of the Valkyries" play in the background during the entire mission (my favorite one, you might have had to enter it while the loading screen was up)
Sweetest of all though, was that he mentioned that an employee had passed away during development of the game, and in-game there is a mural honoring the employee (I definitely recall seeing the mural graffiti shown in the end credits of the game). Doing this key combo in front of that mural in-game will apparently have the player pour out an invisible 40 oz. for him. That sounded like an incredibly sweet gesture, but I never ended up finding the mural in the map so I couldn't test it at the time.

I realize this sounds like a made-up GameFAQs post but it's absolutely true, and this same button combination is supposed to have multiple uses in the game besides the ones I mentioned. I'm hoping putting this out there will have people try and test it to confirm what the combo was because I sure as hell can't remember it haha.

Ecco the Dolphin had aliens because it was inspired by John C. Lilly and the studies of Margaret Howe Lovatt, who allegedly had sex with dolphins. Or jerked off one or something.

The name is based around the fact that Lily, while on drugs and in an isolation chamber, was contacted by an extra-terrestial entity called the Earth Coincidence Control Office also known as ECCO.

Margaret wanted to prove that dolphins could learn human speech but giving them LSD did not work.

John C. Lilly was so crazy. He and a group of his friends tried to find alien life by using radio waves and called themselves The Order of the Dolphin. Ecco the Dolphin's connection to a crazy scientist is probably my favorite crazy story in the entire industry. The dude was just hyped up on drugs and was trying to prove that dolphins were more intelligent than humans and that it was possible for interspecies communication. When he made no progress with that, he moved on to aliens.

I mean, all those drugs are probably why Ecco had a bunch of crazy powers.

There are tons of details in several Metal Gear Solid (2 and 5 in particular) and Zelda games (BOTW in particular), that made me go: "who the hell thinks about that???".

In the original Super Smash Brothers Melee, the Princess Daisy trophy had a mysterious third eye on the back of its head.
Shoukd be noted this is not true in the PAL version, where it was fixed.

I have to point this out, because NO ONE did back in the day and I spent ages trying to get the right angle to see it.

Same thing with that Special Movie option. It was removed in the PAL version.

The Dreamcast entry was always fairly weak, if you're curious its the Sega CD versions of the first entry and The Tides of Time that are worth checking out, they both have improvements over their Genesis counterparts like re-balanced difficulty, additional checkpoints, several additional levels, FMV cutscenes and absolutely incredible soundtracks.

It doesn't really blow my mind, but I like the fact Yasumi Matsuno wrote the story for MadWorld. It's fun trivia.

I love when people have surprising career trajectories.

Edit:

Shinji Mikami was an EP on the first Ace Attorney

The story for Bulletstorm was written by one of my favorite comic writers, Rick Remender

Anna Gunn (Skyler White on Breaking Bad) played a character in the Soul Reaver games

Yeah, I just like interesting career moments lol

Metal Gear Solid 2 has a tiptoe mechanic.

I didn't know about this for a decade. I discovered it while playing the PS3 or Vita version on Hard. There's only one section in the entire game that requires it, and difficulties below Hard never require it.

Yosuke and Chie from Persona 4 dye their hair.
This is stated in one of the art books but never shown in the games except for Persona Q where Yosuke is referred to as "boy with dyed hair."

Minor but I always found it interesting.

In the interests of archival I ought to copy over my posts from the other place, but I wrote up this on over there, too. One thing that this article doesn't touch on is that Ultima VI also takes a few potshots at EA.

Me said:
It happens that Richard Garriott is not fond of Trip Hawkins, founder of Electronic Arts. It's been said that his attitude to craft and worldbuilding goes at odds with EA's all-business approach. In Ultima VI, there's a major plotline about the treasure map of one Captain Hawkins; as his gravestone says, "Here lies Captain Hawkins. He died a hard death and he deserved it". There's other pirates in the game also based on EA employees: Joe Ybarra, Stewart Bonn, Bing Gordon. At the end of Ultima VI, Britannia is somewhat stable and contented. Peace and prosperity are thriving.

Eight of the ten developers that worked on Goldeneye 007 had never worked on a game before. How they managed to make one of the console's killer apps is beyond me.

Also, Miyamoto told Rare that he found the violence a bit to much, and proposed a cutscene at the end showing Bond visiting the injured enemy soldiers on the hospital.

I'm not sure what's more insane to me: the fact that 8/10 of the developers had never worked on a game before, or the fact that only 10 developers made the game...

That's precisely why it was good. They used people with fresh minds who didn't have preconceived limits and "game designer" brains, hence the maps being like proper places not Doom WADs.

Here's one in wake of the Visceral Games closure:

Dante's Inferno shipped with a bug where health upgrades you buy on the upgrade tree basically disappear if the game is ever restarted, even after a save, and maybe even after a death?

Anyway - this was never noticed because the UI continues to show a longer health bar, but under the hood that health bar represents 100 hp instead of the 125 or 150 you think you're rocking after spending your hard earned upgrade points on the health upgrade. It just feels like the enemies are hitting harder later in the game.

The bug was discovered and fixed by the team late in production, but rolled back and not shipped because the game had already been playtested and tuned with the bug included.

I don't think he is wearing jeans. It's supposed to be like baggy military pants since you can see it hangs out and most of his official designs ignoring Dissidia have him with baggy black pants. It might just be the character model that makes it look weird while Quistis in official designs has pants over shoes.

Either way, we're in agreement that it's not leather. =)
