20 years ago was quite an amazing year for gaming. In 1998, games like Starcraft, Half Life, Metal Gear Solid or Ocarina of Time came out. We're not talking about just talking about some of the best games of all time, but also some of the most influential ones.

Ocarina-of-Time-Walkthrough.jpg

Since then, in the span of 20 years, we had many incredible and groundbreaking games. However no game, in my opinion, has been as influential as Resident Evil 4. It revolutionize the 3rd person genre to the point it layed out the blueprint for 3rd person games for the 360/PS3/Wii generation. And to this day, the influence of Resident Evil 4 is still stronger than ever ! You want a proof ? How about 2018 !

Even if Resident Evil 4, was first released on Gamecube in January 2005, its influence is all over 2018 with the two of the most acclaimed or talked about games of the year : God of War, 94 on Metacritic and a strong candidate for game of the year ; and Resident Evil 2 remake, that just won best game of E3 Game Critic awards.

Do you agree that Resident Evil 4 is the most influential game of the last 20 years ? If not, what other game would you consider ?

Modern Warfare has probably reached even more people, but it's maybe not the most influential among game devs

Probably world of Warcraft as it changed the way mmos were pecivied... and the sheer about of clones that wanted to be the next 'it' mmo

Yes. I can't think of another game that has had it's fingerprints all over damn near every major blockbuster game as re4 has

Its gotta be COD 4. Nothing like it beforehand then suddenly every game becomes a modern shooter.

Don't discount Wii Sports. It was almost single-handedly responsible for the massive success of the Wii, which in turn fundamentally changed the way the console market operated for years.

While we're at it, Grand Theft Auto III is up there as well. I'm sure I don't have to explain why.

I mean Ocarina Of Time is like just in another dimension of influential when it comes to action games in third person, and i mean, isn't Gears of War also way more influential than RE4 when it comes to TPS?

So like 2, maybe 3 games copied is style ?

Thats nothing compared to COD, Gears, PUBG, Halo, GTA.

Espcially COD and Gears which led almost every first andthird person shooter to copy it down the the letter.

Halo gave us 2 weapons and a way to play fps on console that didn't suck... So...

Then there was the whole recharging shields thing

What was the first open world game that really caught peoples' attention/introduced things like survey points and points of interest? Because I'd say that one is the one that's fingerprints are all over the majority of major releases for the past two console generations.

It sure is my favorite. Still play it occasionally, and can't wait to try the newly finished HD texture pack.

Honestly, I know people will accuse me of hyperbole, but this game is World Class in terms of encounter design and variety, pacing, dynamic difficulty, and enemy variety. I have yet to play a game yet that nails all these things quite as well as RE4.

Influential doesn't mean "more people copied it". There would be no Souls without ICO, but they're hardly similar.

In fact, the only other answer I can think of to choose instead of RE4 would be ICO. That game changed everything when it comes to storytelling in this medium.

GTA III had a bigger impact than Ico.

It would be if it weren't for GTA3.

At least on consoles. I don't know what pc people were into at the time.

I'm gonna give it to World of Warcraft but RE4 is a very good contender along with maybe PUBG and Dark Souls.

You're giving ICO too much credit. It's a small game not many people has heard of.

MGS and FF7 set the way for narrative driven games long before it.

It's Halo or GTA3.

Hundreds of games followed Halo's design conceits - 2 weapons you swap in out out, offhand grenade. Without Halo there wouldn't have been COD4.

Not sure how many lines you can draw from GTA3.

GTA 3.
RE4 has probably lasted longer though, but stuff like GTA3, Minecraft, CoD4 probably influenced more in a shorter time.

Halo CE revolutionised FPS controls on console to the point where every game was still using the left stick to crouch and B/O to melee for years to come. Not to mention Halo 2's matchmaking system and ranking system which is in almost every single multiplayer game to date.

People saying Halo instead of Unreal, lol

The beginning of Halo feels like essentially an enormous homage to Unreal.

I'd argue there is one more influential:

Arma (the series, but particularly Arma 2 and Arma 3)

These games are much less popular than what they ended up creating out of the community. DayZ pretty much kicked off the open world survival genre and was an Arma 2 mod. PlayerUnknown's DayZ Battle Royale was an Arma 2 DayZ mod, then became just PlayerUnknown's Battle Royale for Arma 3. PU worked on what became H1Z1's King of the Kill, which was quite popular, and then of course went to work on PUBG. His Arma mods made the genre popular in the first place.

Yeah, even Kojima took notes from RE4. Pretty much every 3rd person action series changed a bit after RE4
