This and RE6 easily offer the best TPS mechanics. Wish more TPS games would go heavier on the mecganical side.

Give me a procedurally generated mash up of combat arenas with the controls of Resi 6 and you'd have a game I'd play forever

I guess that's pretty close to the Mercenaries mode though

Does anybody have any examples of what makes Uncharted 4's combat so great? I'm so confused on why so many people think it's better than fucking Vanquish of all things.

Story is trash. As for gameplay, it's serviceable at best.

Just because the game throws a billion things at you on hardest difficulty and the challenges doesn't make the gameplay deeper or better.

I Platinumed the game, before anyone accuses me of not getting the gameplay or not being good at it.

I finished it but I never really got this game. The whole gameplay is built around boosting, and the gauge lasts like 3 seconds. When I start doing cool stuff I'm more worried about my gauge running out and leaving me stranded in the middle of the battlefield, rather than focused on what I'm actually doing.

Not before getting mouse+keyboard without aim assist and 60+fps!!! So maybe only could be the best after the PC version :)

It's a perfectly adequate 7/10 game. Combat is fun, story is nonsense and graphically it is serviceable. It is clearly a tier below Gears or RE4 or UC2.

I was just thinking about Mega Man and how that franchise never had it's Mega Man 64 (a title that properly laid the foundation for a permanent change to the 3D paradigm) and right after that I thought Vanquish was probably the closest we ever got to a Mega Man 3D.

Funny thing is Mega Man 11 has copied Vanquish's slow mo mechanic (complete with the overheat gauge).

I love the game, but my main problem with it is that the game becomes so much more fun at the Bogeys fight, when you have the unlocked suit limits, and you just boost around like crazy.

Finally played it recently, i was pretty disappointed honestly.
Picked the hardest difficulty level available and quickly realized i could just cheese the entire thing by just dodge rolling into short burst of god mode bullet time platinum fancies so much but this time you could do it on demand. There was no strategy involved, just finding a cover now and then to regen the bar but even if i emptied it by mistake it's not like you were completely defenceless anyway. To me it was more a spectable game than anything, it looked cool, threw enough gimmicks at you to keep things somewhat fresh but also not so much because you'd mostly just encounter them all the same and after a few hours, the game ends, no good boss fights in sight.

I'm guessing one of the additional difficulty level removes or nerfs the bullet time gimmick which could make the game far more interesting and ultimately remove my main complaint about it but since i'm mostly a one and done kind of guy the experience wasn't really impressive, a shame since i did liked the premise of it and it's always cool to control a guy in a powersuit. It wasn't a bad game, i still had some fun with it but with all the praise it got i really expected far more from it.

This is a stealth video of one of the combat scenarios but I think it is perfect to illustrate why UC4 is such an amazing TPS.

The level design is incredibly conceived, with large areas promoting a really wide range of options to tackle combat, and the verticality is unparalled to any other TPS. There is simply no other TPS game out there with such a dynamic and vertical level design.

It also controls like a dream even though it is extremely animation-heavy, which makes it even more impressive.

Now add to that its 3 viable combat mechanics: melee, shooting and stealth. It is EASILY the most varied TPS combat out there. You can easily alternate between melee and shooting and stealth as you want. That is why playing it as a cover shotter is a huge disservice to its combat btw. The game is all about movement and this video makes that evident, the level design is built around giving the players opportunities to have the most locomotion possible during gun fights, which in a sense it is kind of Vanquish design philosophy too (movement based gameplay), but the different is that UC4 embraces that on a vertical and horizontal level.

I would also like to praise the amazing hit detection from bullets. It makes it all much more satisfying.

It is just like almost any other shooter! The aiming can be faster and because of the keyboard, you will never "need" claw grip.

That's why I love the Xbox Elite Controller. With back paddles you don't need claw grip either. You can boost and dodge with them while shooting and controlling the camera.

I used to be of the opinion that Resident Evil 4 was a better game, but as the years have gone by I've come to see Vanquish as clearly superior. The only thing RE4 really has over Vanquish (aside from its phenomenal presentation) is that it's a much simpler game and therefore has an easier time forcing the player to come to grips with all its weapons and enemies, even on the relatively easy normal mode. Vanquish, being a much faster-paced game with more wildly different weapons, significantly more movement options, and more complex enemies can't really test the player in the same rigid ways RE4 can - so as a result Vanquish does end up being a bit of a "combat sandbox" game, where it is unfortunately feasible to play through it in ways that aren't very interesting (because the sheer complexity of the game means there's no way for the developers to force you to play in a fun / risky way, similar to the issues I've seen people have with Bayonetta or the Itagaki Ninja Gaiden games - or, to make a more direct comparison, RE6, although that game certainly has other problems).

If you play through it once or twice on the lower difficulty modes I can definitely see Vanquish being a bit underwhelming due to its short length, but as someone who likes replaying games and trying to explore their depth, I agree that Vanquish is probably the best third-person shooter.

Binary Domain isn't really in the conversation at all, I think. It's absolutely a great game but it is tremendously simpler than Vanquish or even Resident Evil 4 (I'll also say here that I don't think RE4 is much weaker than Vanquish, in case this post sounds like I'm ragging on it). BD is really just a rock-solid game that is elevated by its extraordinary presentation, but I don't feel it's comparable to Vanquish in terms of quality.

I'd add Binary Domain before MGSV, MGSV is overall the best game in that list, but it doesn't give you real options to go all out action until end game.

When talking about a game's depth we talk about it at its max potential.

People don't call DMC4's combat system one of the deepest ever made based on its opening arsenal. It's about how it functions with all the tools it offers.

The number of actions, tools, vehicles etc. that are at your disposal in MGSV is seriously nuts. Buddies like Quiet and D-Walker are also great for an action style of play.

With that being said, it honestly doesn't take long for you to start kicking ass in MGSV if that's how you want to play. There's plenty of tools available in the world itself to make that happen.

Vanquish, Warframe and Dead Space 2 are my holy trinity of fantastic mechanically engaging TPS. Add to that list Max Payne 3, Binary Domain, Gears of War 3, Quantum Break and Metal Gear Solid 5 in any order, it doesn't matter. Those three are just so damn good with Vanquish being the king.

Oh! I misread your post, MGSV is easily the best TPS when it comes to gameplay depth, but maybe due to the topic being about Vanquish, I thought it was specifically about action games. My mistake.

Those saying Uncharted 4 and Warframe are on crack if theyre refering to the gameplay. I love those games but the gunplay, tight controls and pace of Vanquish demolishes them. As games I prefer UC4 and Warframe but they are a league below Vanquish in terms of third person shooting.

It's an overrated shooter with pretty garbage gunplay. Hit detection/impact is weak, the feedback from firing weapons is weak and the actual "SHOOTING" feels as if it takes a backside to the movement mechanics. Which is another meaningless venture because the open spaced environments offer little to no challenge to compliment the boosting mechanics. Enemy AI and layouts are easy to overcome.

I spoke on this in the last Vanquish thread. Nowhere near the best TPS.

Was one of my favourite PS3 generation games. I'm so glad they ported it to PC where it can eternally live on.

The challenge rooms are some of the most fun challenge rooms/post game stuff as well, try it out if you haven't.

The game felt like a deconstruction of the cover shooter genre that was so prevalent at the time.
As soon as I realized that unlike most other games in the genre, you really really don't want to stick in cover for more than a split second it really clicked with me.

Still one of my all-time favorite TPS games.

Yeah I remember playing the demo and that's where it clicked for me but only after a few attempts. I think this is one of the few games where people actually can "play it wrong" and think the game is a bit shit.

It's no RE4, but a great game nonetheless. I remember people not appreciating back in the day due to some uninspired level design and story.

The great thing of Vanquish is the fact that staying in cover is not the best thing to do, and make you remember that it's funnier to go out of cover and dodge and kill everything.

After all... is it better to just cover and shoot, or move around?

Great game, would love a sequel.

Absolutely controller. The game wasn't designed around being played with a keyboard and mouse, so giving yourself super-precise and super-fast aim would be like playing on easy mode.

So I helped write a video game in which technologically advanced Russians dupe America into a folly of catastrophic proportions with the help of a useful idiot of a US President.

My only mistake was the President looked like Hillary Clinton.

Can you people let my fiction remain fiction?

Still no platinum trophy because of challenge 6...

Can't think of a better TPS since I consider UC/TLoU to be action adventure.

It's quite a stretch to say this is the "greatest" TPS of all time. I mean, honestly the gameplay in Max Payne games is much better, and those games do not eschew having an interesting plot like Vanquish does.
