I see that it has been reduced in price today.

However.. the first paragraph in the description for all is:

Fortnite is Epic Games' new Action Building game. This Founder's Pack includes "Save The World," the paid Early Access PvE campaign with microtransactions. Early Access means Save The World has bugs and balance issues. If you'd like to wait, it will be free in 2018. (This purchase includes the Battle Royale PvP mode.)

I put together a comparison of what each pack offers:

QCnoqcR.jpg

As it's going to be free within the next five months. I would effectively be paying £16.49 for

• 4 Exclusive In-Game Banner Icons
• 6 Daily Loot Pinata Packs
• Exclusive Founder's Loot Pinata Pack

I enjoy Fortnite (Battle Royale) and am tempted to give this a go. Is it worth paying for or holding on for a few months and getting it for free? Is there any advantage to buying now?

They said f2p-version should launch this year. So I would wait.

I played it and it's really cool. But it's a grinding game and the game gets much more harder when you progress. So you'll need a squad.

Depends how interested you are in the prospect of being able to grind vbucks. If you're interested in skins etc in the PvP mode, then you can use the PvE side to effectively fund them, and you'll make your money back on it fairly quickly since you get 50 vbucks a day from dailies and then there's main story quests, event quests and other activities that give it.

Next week is 1 year anniversary, so maybe they'll soon be talking about when it will go free. Since you've waited this long to buy access you might as well wait a bit more (like I am).

I never played it, and maybe it's great, but why would you pay for content that's going to be free in several weeks? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I found it pretty boring and grindy. Mission types are repetitive and most things just have you roaming around a map for a bit, huddling up at the objective, and defending it for several minutes against AI zombie hordes that just kind of move straight to it and attack. With how great the BR aspect has been handled, I feel like the STW has not. You're paying to play it for now but it definitely has the feel of an F2P game in how it progresses.

Its really good if you like grinding for rare stuff and building collections, very addictive.

The only downside is they dont do a lot with the PvE side compared with the free Battle Royal side, which is annoying.

Totally worth 16 quid OP.

If you're into BR it's worth it just for dicking about with your home bases to perfect your building.

Sounds like good build practice for BR
It really is. Home bases are stress free builds until you hit the switch, you can dip in and out for supplies. The first couple of zones are a breeze but once the challenge ramps up it a great exercise in thinking on your feet as your initial plan (along with your defences) falls apart around you.

It's very grindy and overwhelms you with a dozen mechanics that's not explained well. Once you choose your class and level it up to get the second ability, it can be fun. But you have to grind a lot to progress. The upside is that you earn a lot of V-Bucks you can use in BR mode. I believe if you buy in now you can still earn Founder's Rewards which has some V-Bucks and loot boxes. If you buy in now you won't ever need to buy loot boxes. They give you so much stuff to start with and it doesn't stop until you complete all the missions they give you, which there's a lot of. The actual defense building mechanics are really cool and when you have a full party you can build some crazy traps and fortresses. It's definitely a way better experience with a group than playing alone, not to mention easier. You have a home base that you occasionally need to defend and it gets hard if your doing it alone.

I bought it at Christmas and played around 35+ hours before getting to the second zone and getting hit buy the grind f2p wall. I still jump on it from time to time to farm some vbucks to get those BR skins. I'd say its worth it, I found the player base recently seem a lot better at the objectives unlike at Christmas when I would usually run into players that afk'd or had zero ideas what they were doing.

In terms of vbucks, I think I've made 5000+ just from playing Save the World.

Didn't Epic put a skeleton crew on it since BR took off? I'd probably advise against for that reason.

I bought it with my Unreal Engine Rebate and I don't think it was totally worth it.

The game itself is a bit of a boring wave shooter with some light building.
The scavenging and crafting is way too granular (Sticks/Bricks/Steel is broken down into Springs, Nuts etc) for what are simple builds.
Navigating the Menu UI is a nightmare.

I haven't played it since I bought it a few months ago, so it's possible some or even all these things are fixed.

Yeah, I don't think this can be understated. The game itself is pretty simple, but it's just bursting at the seams with all kinds of menus, icons, and stats.

It feels like a AAA mobile game and has tons of grindy elements in it. IIRC you can receive V-Bucks which you can then use to pay for Battle Pass, but other than that, I'm not sure if I would recommend it

I also agree with the observation that there is simply too fucking much going on, too many menus, to many stats, to many things to collect and level up and keep track of, and so on

I'd agree with all of this. I bought it at launch (of Early Access) and it totally did my head in. I'd wait until it's free. Fortnite BR is often held up as this loot box free bastion of 'how to do F2P right' but the Save The World mode totally feels like a traditional mobile game full of loot boxes and encouragement to spend spend spend. There's so much fluff and stats and loot and upgrade trees, it's like the opposite of BR. I'm sure it'll be free soon to complete the package. All you're getting is a bunch of lootboxes and the opportunity to discover that it's not that good early.

Just to extrapolate on my UI point. Here's the one for the Battle Royale mode:

3YncUua.png

A little cluttered, especially now, but the biggest button on screen is the most important one: Play. It's bright colour also stands out against everything else.

Here's the first menu you see in Save the World.

KHd05Sr.png

It's designed so that there's no way you'd see the play button immediately. In fact the most prominent things are stuff you spend cash on.

The microtransactions is only on the "Loot" and "Store" tab. The game isn't constantly advertising that you should pay real money.

To be fair they have been improving it as time goes on.

When I first started playing it simply running required stamina, and it was a nightmare getting across the map until you got the hoverboard. You also couldn't carry that many building materials at all. They've since fixed both of those issues and others too. It's definitely not getting as much attention as PvP but they're still working on it quite a lot. They definitely do need to improve on the UI though. While I'm used to where everything is, I remember getting a bit lost at first, so I have no doubt others will have issues with it too.

That all said, I don't think it's a game you can play a lot without getting burned out. The maps get kind of repetitive after a while, so I'm back to just doing the dailies every 3 days (they stack up to 3 like in PvP) for the vbucks. Which leads me back to what I said in the previous post, I recommend buying it if you play PvP and want vbucks for skins, but outside of that you may as well wait.

I've not spent vbucks on anything in SotW mode and have played it perfectly fine.... There's plenty of ways to get stuff out of just paying, really the only thing you can pay for is loot boxes and infact I'd go so far to say that putting money into the loot boxes isn't worth it at all. You don't need to with the way the events are designed, they give you event crates which gives characters/weapons or even just straight up allow you to choose them through doing event quests. There's also a tab where you can use tokens gained ingame to buy stuff.

I'm just waiting it out at this point. I know there's a decent community around it, but who knows how much support or even if it'll actually survive with how big the BR mode has gotten. Seeing them kill off Paragon definitely gave me pause about giving them any money for another early access thing.

People seem to be asking and a little confused. So for anyone who the above didn't answer:

Fortnite Save The World started as a player vs environment (PvE) co-op tower defense game. This cost money and is in early access. They then launch Fortnite: Battle Royal which is player versus player (PvP) in response to PUBG, which was and is free to play. Then recently said they will change PvE to be free to play model.

I hope it comes to the Switch. Is it worth paying for it? It depends on what is different in the F2P version of the game. For example, it might be more loot box dependant than the paid version of the game. There could be a lot of changes to it. So I cannot make any suggestions on if it's a waste of money or not.

The F2P version might suck a lot. I'm not a fan of Fortnite PvP, but am interested in Fortnite PvE, and will try it if it's on the Switch.

Still not even confident that it'll go F2P any time soon. People have actually been buying it again due popularity of BR (I was one of those people) and they haven't said a peep about their plans for F2P StW in months.

To be clear, Save The World (previously just known as 'Fortnite') was always gonna be F2P. They launched it as paid to get into the early access but always with the intention of it being free once it was out of EA.

What are the chances of it still producing a way to create vbucks when free? I didn't know you could grind your own currency. It actually makes it more appealing.

It's a good why to get V-Bucks, you could make $20 in V-Bucks pretty quick too. I'd be surprised if it's as easy to do when free.

I have 350 hours into Fortnite on Switch.

Can someone tell me how I have been missing playing an entire game mode all of this time? lol... I feel dumb now...

Sorry for the bump.

But I can't get into the PvP and the PvE looks good.

Is there still a community on the stw?

Community is very healthy right now, loads of people playing.

I highly recommend joining one of the many facebook StW world groups if you have a FB account, the three largest have thriving/helpful communities.

In game has healthy numbers too.

It's not on switch, just BR.

It's a very good game that's had TONNES of HUGE updates over the last few months.

From massive new content drops to myriad QoL improvements.

If you played it back in the day and put it down, now we have:

9999 of each build mat from 999
A hoverboard to traverse the map
Sprint no longer tied to stamina
Weapon/trap perk re-rolls
Weapon/trap rarity upgrading
Access to storage from the main menu
You can research (ie: acquire any time for a material cost) any non-event item from the collection book.
You can unslot any item from the collection book that you previously slotted (including event items) for 20 v-bucks.
Canny Valley storyline and biome added.

And loads more.

They're really putting a lot of effort into this game and while it can be very grindy the core gameplay is great and the constant updates of new content and improvements are awesome.

Good call, it's a really fun game.

PM me if you'd like a link to the best FB groups, I've been playing for some time and there are a few that have inclusive and helpful communities that make grouping really easy.

Also if you ever get stuck and need advice, I'm power level 95 and know the game pretty much back to front at this point.

I play on ps4 which has cross play with PC, my psn and epic are in my profile.
