Today begins a big collective across multiple channels, dev studios, and companies for #loveindies, where the goal is to have people writing, sharing and posting about their favorite indie games both old and new. Reviews are massively important in this day and age so even the smallest written review helps!

BG3JCIT.jpg

Everyone is joinin' the cause from tiny one man dev studios to ID@XBox, so be sure to post your reviews this week!

Here's my review today of Duck Game, and I plan to write at least one review a day: https://steamcommunity.com/id/chubigans/recommended/312530?tscn=1531770795

Post your reviews or some games you think need a little sharin' this week!

I'll share my top games from 2016, as I think they are still tremendous games:

COPY KITTY

Copy Kitty is an absolute gem. This is the one of the few games that actually feels like an evolution of the old video game concepts that dominated the 90s. Not an imitation or an attempt at a "retro feel", this is the real damn business. The game melds Kirby, Megaman, and Treasure games together, as you can absorb enemy powers and COMBINE them up to 3 times, which results in hundreds of different weapons. There are lots of bosses, great level design, and an extremely funky aesthetic that reminds me of Super Paper Mario's villain's world.

WUPPO

I think about games that hit the closest to real, honest classic gaming. Authentic and not forced or fabricated. For example, I think Bleed is the closest an indie game has gotten to a legitimate Gunstar Heroes successor. With Wuppo, I think this is the first indie game I've played to feel, in its presentation, with its cast of quirky characters, with its music, its gameplay systems, etc. like a Nintendo-made game. It may not LOOK like one (The art is more like a very cute spin on An Untitled Story), but it sounds, acts and feels like one in just about every way. If you don't like the direction the Paper Mario series has gone, this game is not Paper Mario, but it has that same kind of writing, and worldbuilding, and overall fun and adorability.

There is a huge amount of bosses (17!!), a theme park with rides you can ride on, an underground city with jobs (we'll get to that), an apartment complex full of nutty people, a forest tribe of flower people, islands in the sea to find, another dimension entirely-- the world of Wuppo is enormous. Not quite the size of a game like Opoona (another similarly quirky and wonderful game), but much larger than you'd expect on first playing the game.

The combat and general interface are relatively simple. Point and click to fire, WASD to move. You can throw items on pedestals and give items and money to people for trade. Part of the fun of the game is finding things in shops that you have no idea what they are, and sometimes you might need them. Why does a city sell a diving helmet? Why does an apartment sell rocks? You'll find out!

Wuppo is a fabulous game. It's so weird, so wild, so wonderful, so witty, so silly, that it kept me smiling all the way to the end.

KHIMERA

Khimera is a melee-focused Megaman style game with a Mario 3-style world map where you can befriend the bosses you beat, acquire their powers in a Metroidvania style, and revisit stages to find secrets! It's a FREEWARE game on Steam, but the developer absolutely should have charged for it. There is a lot of effort and love put into this. Great music too.

THOTH

THOTH is a oppressive twin-stick shooter with dissonant Kubrick-esque music, levels as short as a Warioware microgame, and unnrelenting design variety that will constantly keep you on your toes.

That sounds like such a magazine quote, I'm the worst. Listen, the most important things about a game that goes for simplicity and minimalism in its design is that (1) the abstract symbols are easy to read, and (2) each level brings a new idea. And THOTH does both really well. When you see a line of dots, you'll always know what it means based on where the dots are arranged. You'll know what a square inside of a square means.

Simplicity extends to the controls. Left stick moves, right stick shoots. You move faster when not shooting. Patience is key to the gameplay, but the music is so stifling and unsettling that it is difficult to hold on to your nerves as 6 or 7 boxes are chasing you. This is the most stressed out you'll ever get looking at shapes.

FULL BORE

If you miss Fez and you like block puzzlers like Sokoban or digging games like Boulderdash, this may be just up your alley. It's an open-world non-linear puzzle game where you are a boar and you're solving puzzles to get gems and trying to get yourself out of debt. Can't solve a current puzzle? You can move on to the next room, or maybe leave that area and go to another area. Like Fez, there are rooms within rooms. You can rewind time if you screw up a move. Also like Fez, there are areas with cryptic solutions, and QR codes. Full Bore is STILL an underrated game that most people haven't heard of, which makes me sad because it's now 4 years old, and the game only has 45 reviews on Steam.

Yoku's Island Express - (PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch)

Yoku's Island Express combines the addictive nature of pinball with the exploration of a Metroidvania. The art direct is gorgeous, the music is extremely chill, and the level design is brilliant. The game oozes with charm with it's colorful visuals, hand-drawn environments, and quirky cast of characters. If you're a fan of pinball or Metroidvania titles, I believe that Yoku's Island Express does justice for both genres.

In my opinion, it's one of the best indie games of 2018, and it deserves wayyyy more discussion than it currently receives.

And for the most part, many critics seem to agree that it's a solid game:

GameSpot - 9.0 out of 10
Destructoid - 9.0 out of 10
Nintendo Life - 9.0 out of 10
Vooks - 9.0 out of 10
PlayStation Lifestyle - 9.0 out of 10
PC Gamer - 8.5 out of 10
IGN - 8.0 out of 10
Edge Magazine - 8 out of 10
Push Square - 8 out of 10
PlayStation Official Magazine UK - 8 out of 10
GameBlog - 8 out of 10
Eurogamer - Highly Recommended
Waypoint - Loved it.

Damn where do I start.... lets do 2 per post since we can only do 2 media at time

Full Metal Furies is an absolutely perfect mix of beat em up and RPG with a hilariously written story that has some glorious puns and awesome 4th wall breaking.
And for the Witness/FEZ people, the post game requires some out of box puzzles ;D
It is so perfect for coop that even in singleplayer you play as 2 characters so you can coop with yourself.
It has awesome acessibility options, online play and some of the best cast of women characters I seen in a long time.
It is by the creators of Rogue Legacy if it changes anything to you.
Was released also on Xbox One and the devs do know that it would be perfect for the switch, but don't have anything to announce yet

Enter the Gungeon is an awesome game that is about to become even more awesome. It is a roguelite multidirectional shootter with bullet hell elements. Basically Binding of Isaac but less edgy and more charm. And better.
It has LOTS of awesome weapons to unlock and find that goes from pop culture references (ghostbusters to mario bros to looper to bayonetta to megaman) to just crazy ideas like a bullet that shoots guns, a lower case R that shoots the letters for "bullet" and a gun that the bullet pattern is the DNA helixes.
It is fun, has some glorious bosses and gun puns
It is avaliable on Switch, Xbox One and PS4 besides the PC.
It will receive a big FREE update making it more easy and putting more awesome stuff this week so you should check this game out even if you played before

I was a huge fan of The Swapper. Great and often difficult puzzles. Amazing atmosphere. And a calming and immersive soundtrack.

I feel Subsurface Circular deserves more love.

A strictly dialogue-based game from the developer of Thomas Was Alone and Volume, set entirely in a single subway car in an original sci-fi setting. Deals with issues of automation and artificial intelligence. Can be beaten in a single session. Overwhelming positive reviews on Steam.

Give it a shot.

Gotta Protectors on Nintendo 3DS from Ancient Games is a nostalgia trip but with plenty of humor making fun of typical tropes in oldschool games too. The gameplay is tower defense but really actiony and fun where you can make custom builds with plenty of playable characters and the soundtrack is chiptune by the GOAT Yuzo Koshiro (Streets of Rage 2, Etrian Odyssey).

If you're a fan of 90's games you'll love this one.

Every week should be loveindies week, and if you want to continue expressing your passion for these titles, feel free to jump over to the Indie thread even after this lovely initiative to continue sharing love and impressions for your favourite Indies :)
https://www.resetera.com/threads/indie-games-july-2018-dawn-of-the-deadly-dream.14783

As I made approximately a million threads about hiddem gems and crazy good Indies, I dont want to spam the whole thread with my pictures/posts, so I'll just link my "Favourite Hidden Indie Gems" thread, where I listed the games that are dear to my heart with the least exposure:
https://www.resetera.com/threads/indie-games-unsung-heroes-of-a-bygone-era-beware-of-gifs.1250/

Some highlights of the ones most dear to me:
Fjords
Link / 7$
KOV0YBa.gif
6kPhTwb.gif

A world, which is as alien to your character as it is to yourself. Figure out the rules,
figure out where to go. Unsuspecting, but highly surprising adventure.

Full Bore
Link / €14,99
CS2r22P.gif

One of my all time favourites. Incredibly charming, open world, clever puzzles
and incredible diversity and nonstop puzzle fun. If you like puzzle games at all, get this.

Cubesis
Link / €3,99
KWJSe4d.gif
u4VAn44.gif

s60d3uM.gif

A slower paced "puzzle" game with a god sim theme and one of the most original and
charming games I discovered in 2014. Highly unique and rewarding level design. Love it!

Echo of the Wilds
Link / €8,99
kuqjKAL.gif

Mystery survival game, with inventive campaign progress, mystery elements and a
puzzle-style approach to progress, which has you figuring out just... how it works.

Eidolon
Link / €15

Eidolon is a fantastic experience, but it requires an unthinking of modern impatience.
Take your time with this one, enjoy the beauty of being lost in nature with only yourself to rely on.

Earthtongue

An alien garden simulator is exactly the type of game I started creating these threads for.
I absolutely adore it and I'll keep these experiences dear to my heart.

The game will take your expectations, coalesce them into a ball, and them roll them downhill into a serene landscape of mind-blowingness.

Here's one I think is unfortunately a bit overlooked:

Anodyne

Probably the simplest way to describe this game is as a cross of a classic Zelda game and Yume Nikki. The similarities to Zelda are really only surface level, though. Dungeons don't contain items and there's a large focus placed on platforming challenges. YMMV on how much you end up enjoying this, but I personally found the platforming focus to be fun and only occasionally frustrating. The most interesting thing Anodyne brings to the table gameplay wise is actually unlocked in the post game, but I can't spoil it here because it would ruin the fun.

The main thing the game has going for it is its trippy soundtrack and aesthetic. Other than Yume Nikki itself, Anodyne is really the only game I can think of that perfectly captures the atmosphere of being inside a dream. Almost every song on the soundtrack excels at evoking the feelings I most associate with dreams: melancholy, nostalgia, disorientation, and occasionally outright fear. The atmosphere is what really sells this game and is the reason why I still remember it all these years later despite having played maybe 100 different indie games since. Anodyne definitely isn't perfect; as previously mentioned, the main gameplay can be very divisive, and the plot and dialogue can feel annoyingly pretentious at times. But for $10 I absolutely think the game is worth checking out.

What counts as an indie nowadays? If a game gets picked up by a publisher halfway through and makes it to market then do they still qualify? Or should we be putting out purely independent games in this thread?

Indies so often do what the majors don't, and I couldn't be happier. The A and AA market make up the majority of what I play, and thanks to the rightly revered common x86 language it seems we're all being invited to the feast! Greatness awaits indeed.

I don't know how much the following games "need sharing" but they're what I think of when it's best of the best and godammit they deserve more sales!

Hyper Light Drifter
Available on PC, Mac, Linux, PS4, Xbox One, Switch, Ouya
An incredible sci-fi Zelda game with wonderfully complex combat and puzzles. A complete joy from start to finish.

Odallus The Dark Call

Cuphead

It's not said enough: the almighty Metal Slugs and Contras gladly welcome Cuphead to the hall of champions. One of the best co-op experiences I've ever had ever!

FEZ
Available on PC, Mac, Linux, Android, PS3, PS4, Vita, Xbox 360
A game that literally melted my mind- a realization of dreams with mesmerizing puzzles. Again, I actually don't think it's talked about enough considering how incredible it is.

I started playing PS1 when I was four or five, and it wasn't until later when I was in my tweens that I started getting into flash games and freeware games. But it was two games in particular that made the biggest impression: Warning Forever and Facade. Warning Forever was such a weird and clever concept unlike anything I had experienced before. A game where you only fight a single enemy that learned and adapted to you? It peaked my interest to search for similarly unique games. And Facade was the one that showed me that games can be more than just action and bombast and fun, this quirky intimate experience with a premise more akin to a short story than anything I had seen a game do before. Not to mention the mechanic of typing your responses and the characters reacting to your words. (Of course silly tween me would type a lot of curse words to see what would happen. I didn't fully appreciate how unique Facade was till later)

Papers Please

"Purely by its unique mechanics and UI, I would already recommend this game to anyone (although I suspect gamers with more experience might be able to better appreciate how the game stands out in the medium). And that's before I even start discussing the story, which can be surprisingly effective and thought-provoking."

(technically not a review, but I posted this 1 year ago) https://www.giantbomb.com/papers-pl...1618-is-a-must-see-for-papers-please-1812027/

Synthetik

Synthetik is a topdown roguelike shooter - it's set in a futuristic dystopia and comes as a cross between Crusader:No Remorse and Nuclear Throne (thanks MB :d). The weapon system is probably the highlight - you've got manual mag ejection, active reloads and you'll have to contend with recoil and heat management. Once you get into the groove, you'll be slapping in mags and popping critical headshots in a machine like rhythm. You pick a class, and acquire weapons and gear that'll help you contend with increasingly elite troops as you journey deeper into the core. There's a bit of metaprogression as well, as classes level up and offer unique perks and skills that can be equipped beforehand. The game also features online co-op which is a nice rarity for an indie title.

InterventionGif.gif

The game is unabashedly all about the gun porn as well. You've got a crazy selection of assault weapons, shotguns, pistols and more experimental prototypes. Weapon variants and attachments also allow for additional experimentation with builds.

Cuphead should be on every system possible to share its love, and the future is not certain- hopefully more ports are inevitably on the way once exclusivity expires. (?)

Morizora's Forest
Pl8kIWA.jpg

The only bad part of the game to me is the restrictions on the RPG Maker systems which limits its resolution. You can play in fullscreen but the images are blown up and not the best. Still, one of my favourites easily.
First of all the music is fantastic as expected from Laura Shigihara who comes from a musical background having done songs for Plants Vs Zombie and To The moon.
qzUF3NT.jpg

The game is pretty short and features no combat. It has some light puzzles but mostly focuses on the journey of the Boy with his Mom. The game takes place in a hospital where the Boy is living as well as the fantasy world of Morizora's Forest which is from the story book his Mom reads to him every day. The games does very well in balancing a dark reality in the hospital with a colourful, whimsical fantasy world that was fun to explore.

As you travel the fantasy world you will help various characters that align with their real world counterparts in some way. Bit by bit you get to know your fellow patients in the hospital as you work through their story and your own. The game has a lot of charm and just enough in collectibles, secrets and vagueness to keep you wondering. Some things aren't explained explicitly, other things are hinted at very early if you pick up on them you real have a window of insight into future events.

There is a dedicated Talk To Mom button that is pretty novel. It reminds me of other comforting little features like hugging the blob in Boy and his Blob. You can talk to her at different places for different context dialogue, hints or reminders on where to go. Her pun game isn't bad.

CfZrRQC.jpg

I haven't liked a cast of characters this much since Baldurs Gate 2 and I've played most of the high profile WRPGs and JRPGs, certainly anything in a popular franchise I have played one or several of their games such as Mass Effect, Dragon Age, The Witcher, Divinity, Persona, Suikoden, Star Ocean, Final Fantasy, Tales of, etc. Some of them have a great cast but none of them were as interesting to me as the group in Shadowrun Dragonfall.
The gameplay is actually pretty good. Not brilliant, maybe not even great but not bad. The meat of the game is in the writing, world building and characterization of the cast. The story is also pretty good, the opener excited me pretty quickly and while the middle had a bit of a pacing issue (probably more so because I wanted to do every objective and side mission I had) it was overall very good to me. It is mostly a linear experience in that you have do the missions. Within each mission, how you approach it can differ a little. You might hack pass some security, talk your way in past the guards, go in gun blazing, send your little drone through the ducts to open a door from the other side. I think, the gameplay can be a little bit bland if you choose violence at every choice if only because the combat is OK, not great and certainly can get stale pretty fast.

The characters and scenario though I like a lot. I sort of wish there were a couple more characters to balance out the team but I think the current number is actually pretty great. The real problem is probably if you wanted to play a class that one of your team mates is then you will have some double up but that isn't necessarily a problem either.

There are a lot of little interesting side stories if you pay attention to the details. NPCs in your town hub will often have new bits of information to tell you as you progress in the story missions and it really helps give the game a sense of place and world as if it is actually moving forward in time, NPCs are not static. One of the NPCs for instance is an addict and sometimes you talk to her she will be more lucid than others. Through her conversations you might learn more of other people such as the doctor who is treating her, the seller who supplies her and your friend who use to watch over her.

The characters as I mentioned earlier are some of my favourites. They might not be as cool as Garrus (Mass Effect) or as fun as Olivert (Kiseki series) but each of them have a lot of character that is hidden behind their outward appearances. Each character has their own history that led them to where they are, which is essentially being an elite mercenary criminal. Each of them are complicated and honestly not even really good people. They've done bad things, still do bad things and while they have their own morals and lines they would probably cross them if the right circumstances are there. They are complicated and flawed in their characterizations and this makes them fun and interesting. What is even better is that these characters don't seem particularly special either in the grand scheme of things. There are plenty of other Shadowrunners and each of them also seem to carry their own stories and personalities even if they choose not to share with you. Your party members and yourself actually fit into the world and don't look like outcasts or stand out like superheroes. The other people you meet doesn't always come off as incompetent (but some do and it can be hilarious) but rather each has their own objectives and they are simply minding their own business most of the time.

The world is also a nice blend of fantasy and science fiction. It doesn't just have both but it mixes them in a nice glorious mess. Some times it plays nicely and sometimes it might not. Technology is of course everywhere, magic doesn't automatically mean there isn't a need for running electricity to power heaters or street lights or automated cameras, doors, guns etc. Cars are still used and such. Cybernetic enhancements are also available but as you replace more of your body with "chrome" you begin to lose your humanity. The governments are gone and the world is run by mega corporations, most of which are led by dragons... It is so messy. So bizarre, almost alien and yet also so familiar. Many of the problems face in the society are things we have and can easily relate to. Racism, slavery, human experiments, brainwashing children into fanatics... The world was interesting and the writing in the game really helped be get into it.

Maybe more later.

Dream Quest
Yes, it looks terrible in pictures and yes, the aesthetic is extremely DIY
But after what that DIY style becomes charming, probably because beneath the visuals is one of the best card-based roguelike ever, with tons of depth, very varied classes, and too many satisfying card synergies to count. Both the Blizzard and the creator of Magic love it, to the extent that former hired the developer to work on Hearthstone and the latter personally offered feedback on the game

Duskers
You might be the last human alive in the universe and supplies are running out. In this tactical horror game, you need to scavenge derelict ships from the command center of your own vessel, guiding drones with typed command lines and through grainy camera feeds. Surprisingly tense and quite strategic, with a lot of skin-of-your-teeth improvisation when things go to hell

Hydra Slayer
A weird mathematical roguelike where you face multi-headed hydras, where cutting off one head causes X to grow back in their place. Figuring out which combination of magic, items, and weapons can completely decapitate your foes offers a uniquely strategic puzzle-roguelike

Recursed
A room within room within items within rooms space-bending puzzler, Recursed lets you bend space and influence rooms by carrying rooms into other rooms, cloning rooms and items, and making recursive spatial loops. It's the only game I've played that turns Inception's "dream levels and dreams within dreams being affected by stuff a level up" into a playable puzzle mechanic

Stephen's Sausage Roll
The Witness may be the most known "best puzzler of 2016" but I honestly feel that Stephen's Sausage Roll tops it. It's so elegantly designed, with such genius puzzle design and seemingly simple mechanics that unfold into far more complex challenges than you would imagine. A masterclass of level design
