In Watch_Dogs 2 there's a mission where you hack a game company to leak a teaser trailer. The trailer was an actual teaser for Starlink.

The english translation botches the tease, but in that second picture, Cloud is supposed to be saying "Xeno... Gears..."

Indeed. Not just that, it's teasing the lyrics of Small Two of Pieces, XG's vocal theme.

Is it odd that out of all the sins that FF7's abysmal translation is guilty of, the one that's bothering me the most in those screenshots is the utter mishandling of ellipsis? You are not free to put as many freaking dots as you want, it's three goddamn dots (and you also need to put a space before the next sentence!).

A recent game that did this was Doki Doki Literature Club with all the ARG and Project Libtina stuff (although those teasers are pretty well hidden)

I like when games put teasers behind a ARG from the beginning, yeah sure it's fun to find a teaser after beating the hardest difficulty of the game as a reward, but it's even better when there are only cryptic clues inside the game where you have to piece it all together to find what the teaser is.

Ah okay, that makes sense. Thanks

I might be the only person that wants this, but Despair Girls 1 is the game that got me interested in the franchise. The dark and quirky aesthetic was really unique. However, i haven't been able to complete the first game. :( I guess I might not be able to play VNs.

Pretty interesting. I didn't follow Bungie's history much, but is it known that they approached Microsoft with a Destiny pitch but they turned them down and they had to go to Activision?

Bungie negotiated their independence from Microsoft in 2007 so that they could work on games that weren't Halo. I don't think they had much of an idea what those games would be at that time. Destiny wasn't a thing yet. A small team led by Jason Jones began work on what would become Destiny in 2008 while most of the company was working on Halo: Reach (and another small team was working on Halo: Chronicles and would soon be transitioned to ODST).

Thank you very much for this comprehensive answer!

I just thought if the name Destiny was in the pipe during ODST's development, as seen from this easter egg, maybe they actually pitched it to Microsoft.

The Arkham games, for instance, were great in that. It just showed the clear vision Rocketeady had for the trilogy, and while I didn't exactly like the ending, the games were connected in such a beautiful way.

The problem with the Arkham Asylum one is that nobody found it lol. That secret blueprint room went unfound for ages until I think a dev leaked its existance.

If you would indulge me.

Yeah. I am not familiar at all with the Kingdom Hearts lore. Is this the ending of 2? is this supposed to carry over to 3?

Nearly all of the Kingdom Hearts games (less so in the newer ones) have secret fancy cutscene endings that will show off either events or ideas that will take place in the next game. They also used to do this by adding a secret boss of someone from the upcoming games in the special edition of the games. This one is the secret ending of Kingdom Hearts II, which previews a scene from Birth By Sleep on PSP.

Close, but this is the GOAT

There's so much teasers that its even hard to point out.

This is actually pretty interesting because, if I remember correctly, Xenogears was originally pitched to be Final Fantasy VII before Square decided that it was too different from the FF series and so they made it its own thing.

As for the topic at hand, it's been mentioned a few times already but it's become standard in the KH games for them to tease the next game at this point. I'm honestly curious if there will be anything resembling the secret endings for 1 and 2 in KH3.

In Ocarina of Time 3D there was Skyward Sword artwork and in Twilight Princess HD there was a Breath of the Wild image.

It could be said that the inclusion of Crash Bandicoot in Uncharted 4 heralded his return.

Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward did this with the ending... You know what the sequel was about and two of the players for the second (third) Nonary Game.

Wish Uchikoshi released the original script... I don't hate ZTD but it was a big let down and we have so many questions regarding other characters ):

Advent Rising, Too Human, and Conduit 2, all games that teased a sequel that will never see the light of day.
At least Conduit had a second game in the series; the other two didn't even get DLC much less a sequel.

Tony Hawk's Proving Ground had a poster for something like Gun: Magruder's Revenge. A sequel to Gun never came out :(

Several games were originally pitched for Final Fantasy VII. Parasite Eve was originally pitched as Final Fantasy VII, too.

I haven't played it, but they apparently change it in the remaster.

And it's not really botched. The katakana for Xenogears is zenogias. The original localization team probably didn't know about Xenogears at the time and that it was a reference.

Jesus, kinda spooked me considering Zenos and Gaius villain characters in FF14 lol

(Possible tease for a sequel to what is straight up the Worst Game Ever Made.)

I'm still fairly confident that's just an (Incredibly shitty) joke, considering the DR3 anime hastily ended the arc started by that game in a way that just screams "We don't want to do anything with this ever again".

On a side-note, i'm pretty sure the tease for the original game was something that got added in the Vita re-release of SDR2. At which point it was already known that game was coming.

Would be glad to play the sequel too, but PSVITA is quite impossible now... and I think it was more a reference not because is in dev, but because of the story theme of DR3 (not spoiling for who hasnt played it...)

Didn't the Jak games teased the sequels. I kind of remember something like that, but it's been a while, so not sure.

Kingdom Hearts is pretty much the king of this.

- There's the usual secret ending movies, though only KH1 and KH2 really had ones that teased an unannounced game.

- They'll stick in characters from upcoming and/or unannounced titles in the series as optional superbosses in the Final Mix re-releases, though they usually wear something to obscure their faces. To date, the main villain of KH2 was a secret boss in KH1FM, one of the three protagonists of Birth by Sleep (for all intents and purposes) was KH2FM's big optional superboss, and the main villain of Dream Drop Distance was one of Birth by Sleep's optional super bosses.

- Dream Drop Distance in particular had two secret messages stuck into the game. The first was in the form of a credits mini game where you fly around collecting letters: Collecting them all unlocked a secret message teasing the imminent announcement of the then in development HD Collections for the series. The other was also in the credits roll, as every now and then, some giant letters would appear in the background of the credits. By the end of the credits roll, it spelled out "This leads to Kingdom Hearts III", which was announced the following year.
Yeah the way KH does it is my absolute favorite. I remember being hyped to hell and back by the Deep Dive and BBS movies back in high school, but I think what Chain of Memories counts too and it's pretty cool on its own right.

From a narrative point it suggests that Sora has, in some shape or form, been in a place called Twilight Town before, which we had obviously never heard about at that point, that was pretty intriguing by itself, but then you beat the game as Riku and this shows up

Made the start of KH2 all the more interesting... Only like 10 of us played CoM before II though, so yeah...

Westwood put a bunch of trailers for upcoming titles in their games. I think Blizzard did the same?

That is actually pretty cool! Never knew that Uncharted and the Last of Us have a shared universe.

Given the ending of UC4 I don't think they're a shared universe, I like to think of it as a weird alternate timeline situation where the outbreak was contained in the UC universe but got apocalyptic in Last of Us.

Some of my faves:

3015157-zelda1.jpg

Breath of the Wild painting in Twilight Princess HD (the Skyward Sword ones in OoT 3D were a bit too on the nose in comparison)

And Final Fantasy 27 in Deus Ex Human Revolution (Square Enix would need to release 12 games in 9 years for this to actually happen)

Dark Souls had an NPC, Chester, that it appears was an easter egg tease for Bloodborne. He wore that game's gothic, van hellsing style clothing and everything.

Much of Artorias of the Abyss can be seen as Miyazaki already in "Bloodborne mode". Apart from Chester, the Bloatheads (the common enemies found in Oolacile) are very different from the rest of the enemies found in Dark Souls. Even Manus looks more like a Bloodborne boss than a Dark Souls boss, with all that twisting and turning fur that is common in Bloodborne.

Yeah. I remember that one easter egg took ages to be discovered. I thought it was the Calender Man one though. (I think there is also a nod to Arkham Origins in Arkham Knight which is a nice acknowledgment by Rocksteady for WB Montreal's game).

They don't. It was just a nod/Easter egg

Fair enough about Uncharted.

The Final Fantasy one is cool. By the way, Human's Revolution also predicted that Trudeau would become Canada Prime Minister in an e-mail you could find. I would guess it was a random joke, but it is so eerie that it actually came true.
