I see a lot of people mention Fable, Halo and maybe Ninja Theory's game being next gen launch titles but I never really see anyone mention Perfect Dark...If the next Xbox is indeed 2020, didn't Ken Lobb pretty much hint to it as such when he hinted that's when the series would make sense to return (including the more recent rumors of it being in development)?

If I remember right Ken Lobb said Perfect Dark wasn't being worked on in any capacity at the time of the interview (2014 or early 2015 I think), but MS hadn't forgotten about it and would revisit it if it felt right. I think the 2020 bit was acknowledging the irony of the game's futuristic setting being the present or past by the time the next game came out.

Depending on what kind of game Perfect Dark "2" could be, I could see it fill the 2021 slot in between Halo Infinite in 2020 and Gears "6" in 2022.

If it is in development, that is.

I kinda think The Coalition are going to make a new IP after Gears 5 and then end next gen with Gears 6. TC is different from 343i and Turn 10 as they weren't made to make Gears games and they were making Shanghiest before the Gears accquistion. With First Party restructure, I can see it happening.

They were called Black Tusk when they were making Shangheist, then rebranded to TC when it was announced they were making Gears 4. I wouldn't expect any new IP from them, especially with a name taken from the franchise.

I think it's time to reboot Gears, put an open world in it and make the story 'emotional'

I don't think the name matters that much tbh. It's not as if they're named The Gears of War Company. If you don't know where the name came from, it doesn't really tell you anything about what kind of games they're making.

That said, I think they're making another Gears game after Gears 5. I guess we'll know more after the end credits of Gears 5.

But Gears has always been "emotional" and Gears 5 is rumoured to have more open word aspects to it. So i dont see a reboot being thing. Everything needs to be "reboot" nowadays that it lost all meaning.
Well not as emotional as some.....some other games, you have to feel a connection to the family of every single 'enemy' you kill.

Sure, only fans of the series will know that they're named after the in-game government, but that's like 343 Studios being named after the antagonist in the Halo games and we know they'll never make anything other than Halo.

It just seems obvious after the last E3, where they spoke about appealing to new fans on different platforms, that they're only ever going to release Gears games.

A Simply questoon for klobrille: in your opinion, do you think we'll see some update about AOE at gamescom?

Could be too soon. Maybe we'll see a sneak peak of the remastered versions of AoE2 and AoE3.

However it's too strane this lack of news. Aoe4 It has been announced 1 year ago and there weren't update regarding AOE 2 definitive edition. Reading the main communties on the web (like reddit ) many users are really worried about that. There aren't official answers by MS or RELIC.

Well they refer to themselves as that ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Ok, so it seems that Ken Lobb will be involved in the Crackdown 3 project according to the Eurogamer article.
Seems like a good choice to lead the development of the game, considering his history with CD1. Hopefully it doesn't affect any potential new projects or ones he might have been working on.

Kinda kills off the Ken Lobb working on PD rumors then
It's not unusual for MS studios creative directors to look over more than one project at once, but the rumours of PD weren't connected to Ken Lobb just that he had previously said a new PD could be possible back in early 2015. But I would hope CD3 would be Ken's focus given it's development history, but he must have been working on something before getting reassigned.

Ken Lobb is involved in the development of Crackdown 3 (even where it was just named "Crackdown") since years already - just like Joseph Staten is. Dunno why that's news suddenly.

Don't always trust the clickbait articles.

And yes, of course the Microsoft Studios Global Publishing Creative Directors are always working on multiple projects at once.

Well Ken is a high up manager in MS studios looking over a lot of projects and working with multiple MS creative directors, the article says he has now taken a management role in the project which would be a lot more involved than he was previously.

Ken is a Creative Director just like Joseph Staten is. In case nothing changed over night, Staten is still working on CD3. But this obviously doesn't mean Ken can't be working on it, too. It's common for MS Global Publishing that they work together in blurred boundaries. That whole "Ken is now the boss to make sure everything will work" is just bogus and typical Eurogamer hyperbole.

It would be more equivalent to if Joseph Staten took over as the main writer on CD3, right now the main writer is John Goth. Staten looks over the writing in all MSGP games, personally handling some fully like Recore. It would be that sort of a change, simply being more involved, taking a position that a MS producer/MS creative director duo would take on a project. While yes it's a bit hyperbolic on Eurogamer's part as while Ken does usually have multiple creative directors report to him, he does most of the time have one project he dedicates himself to like KI. But calling it bogus or clickbait I disagree with, I see it as a positive that they came in and refocused the project and management with one of the bosses at MSGP (Ken) taking a larger role in steering the games direction. Ken having a more deeper involvement is a positive in my eyes even though there has been problems in his division in the past.

Where is RodneyBunch? We need new info on the state of MS studios (new and old) and fresh gist on probable acquisitions.

Ken L has been involved with CD for years. Pub had a recent reorganization which is probably why the article was written. Simply helping prioritize focus for the org and leaders within.

Thats good to hear, it's clear looking at the last couple of MSGP games released/still in dev/cancelled that there was a lot of issues. I assume thats also partly due to their focus on next gen and it's launch titles now.

I'm a big fan of the new groups options. For a while now I've wanted to see folders on Xbox One and now I kinda have.

I made groups for all kinds of genres like TPS, FPS, RPG and so on. I pinned them to home but what I especially like is how they are shown in the quick side menu (big X button on controller) as well when I choose My games and Apps. It shows all the groups there, lovely! Good fucking job team Xbox!

What's the last thing Ken Lobb has been connected to that turned out above expectations? Killer Instinct is the only thing I can think of.

Promoted Scalebound as the greatest game of all time before it was canceled. Talked about Phantom Dust being this big RPG before it was canceled. Had no positive influences on Rare when they were connected.

I'm honestly not sure that Lobb is any kind of asset to Microsoft Game Studios. This gen specifically he's seemed very out of touch.

I made folders for campaigns I haven't started (which I'm ashamed to say Gears, QB, Halo 5, and 15 more games I really want to play are in), F2P games to log into daily for rewards, easy GS completions I need to do, and MP games I play with friends. I love it too!

Jez Corden from Windows Central said that he heard that Microsoft will have "quite a presence" at Gamescom. I hope it's more like Gamescom 2015 (a lighter, indie-heavy E3 with a few bigger announcements) than Gamescom 2017 (a bit of a bigger Inside Xbox without Phil and with minimal new announcements).

I personally would be happy with some Age of Empires 4 news, a Crackdown 3 gameplay demo (and at least some footage of the multiplayer component), some Ashen footage with a release date, and a few more indies getting a bit of screen time. I also wonder if Microsoft wouldn't have saved a smaller, Germany or Eastern European-based developer announcement for Gamescom just to give that developer's offerings some punch and give the acquired developer a bit of a showcase in their home area. If the rumors Microsoft isn't done making acquisitions is true, I think it'd make a ton of sense to hold one for Gamescom. There's a certain law of diminishing returns on new game studio announcements and holding one back during E3 to announce at Gamescom would be a good way to let people know more are coming and to steal headlines two months after E3. I've always wondered what Yager Development (Spec Ops: The Line) could do with more time and resources and they would seem to fit the mold of the studios Microsoft acquired at E3.

Other things on the "wish-list" would include a Battletoads gameplay teaser (although we have no idea where that game is at in production), a few surprise announcements about the game Vigor from Bohemia Interactive (I played it this weekend in Game Preview and it is really interesting, but I don't really understand the game or the motivation to make an Xbox One exclusive, Battle Royale light, loot and shoot game. I wonder if something else is up), and a cool, smaller first-party announcement (Perhaps another MSGP game? Crackdown will be out soon and the only other MSGP game we know about is Battletoads and they usually have a couple in the hopper.).

Calling the Eurogamer article clickbait seems a bit uncharitable, unless one lacks understanding of what clickbait actually is.

There wasn't much new info there, but nothing about the headline or content makes it clickbait.

I feel like Microsoft may try to keep any acquisitions under wraps until next E3 if possible. Next year will be extremely important in turning the tide of mindshare before next consoles launch. I'd be surprised if they blew major announcements at Gamescom. Showing Crackdown multiplayer and Battletoads gameplay would be pretty big for now.

There were a number of strong indicators that Phil dropped during an E3 interview (I believe the Giant Bomb one) that made me and a few others around here believe that this could be the new thing that the new studio -The Initiative- is working on when they get going.

He was talking about Darryl Gallagher, the new studio head there and what a great job he did rebooting Tomb Raider and how they were in the process of looking at some of there Older IPs and how they could bring something back with a modern generation feel and a a heavy narrative focus. I guess the obvious IP for that is Perfect Dark so a number of us drew that conclusion. I certainly hope its the case.

That's a good idea too. Didn't think of that. This is one of the many reasons why I highly prefer Xbox. They actually listen, have been listening since day one and have been adding things to Xbox to really improve things. Look at what we have now and is still coming like Dolby Vision for Netflix and Blu Ray.

Not expecting a show, that would have been announced by now but perhaps a significant Crackdown showing because well..... that sure wouldn't be a bad thing.

Well Ken Lobb is a head in MSGP, so he will be involved in a lot of MSGP games. As such he will talk about and promote them, that doesn't mean Ken is acting as a creative director on all of them. The creative directors of those projects report to him, for example Ken will talk about AOE but the creative director leading up the AOE franchise is Ishmae (Adam Isgreen.) The last one I think he is officially credited on is KI as supervisor, but yes a few projects under him have had issues.

I feel like Microsoft may try to keep any acquisitions under wraps until next E3 if possible. Next year will be extremely important in turning the tide of mindshare before next consoles launch. That would be a very difficult thing to keep quite, plus it would be artificially limiting what studios you could acquire. To line up the deal for when a studio becomes free of their last project or to keep a studio funded, they will probably just announce any when the deal goes through rather than with a letter like at E3. At least Phil seemed to imply that.
