Started with Therion. I've collected 2 others and working on getting my 4th party member. Game is every bit as good as I was hoping it would be. Granted, I've only put in about 8-9 hours so far, so time will tell if it holds up once I progress further along. Very, very satisfied with my purchase right now.

So is it important to meet all 8 characters before doing any optional stuff? I have been walking around and recruiting the other characters slowly and still have some more to meet up with. My main character is already at level 21. Is this going to create a huge level gap between characters and make their stories too easy?

So I'm early in the game and I read somewhere that the fee for restoring your reputation wasn't that much, and to go ham on the negative path actions if I felt I needed to. So I did this, and ruined my reputation in Flamesgrace....

Only to go to the Inn and find out that it cost 5000 coin to restore my reputation! That's over half of my money! I felt like I was lied to....

I can't stop playing this game. This reminds me of my first weekend with Breath of the Wild or Persona 5. GOTY so far for me.

On the fence about buying this after feeling lukewarm on the most recent demo.

Here's a rather specific question that might help me decide: How are the towns that your come across on your journey? I like JRPGs with numerous sprawling towns that all have their own identity and culture.

Towns definitely have identity to them, and many of them are sprawling for a 16-bit JRPG, taking up multiple screens—but most importantly, they're dense. Every interactable NPC in the game has its own backstory, inventory to take from, and combat statistics for fighting or summoning, which all inform one another. Towns residents thus have deep and interconnected lives.

I think the complete opposite. Cyrus and Ophilia are horrifically boring. H'aanit being terrible due to the awful English.
I'm not playing in English.

But it's because I like coherence. And primrose didn't make sense to me. Therion had a few inconsistencies.
Olberic just didn't appeal to much. Still it works as what it is.

But that's why it differs from person to person. There wouldn't be one good answer to this.

Yeah, I really enjoy the systems and how you can abuse them to trivialize what might initially seem like impossible sections. For instance, Alluring random people with Primrose and watching them decimate bosses almost singlehandedly is awesome (incidentally, does anyone know what happens when you reach the summon limit for these minions? I'm afraid to lose my OP drunken bouncer).

Combat and moment-to-moment gameplay is smooth as butter and lots of fun.
Is that the one in Cyrus's starting location? I tried to recruit him with Ophillia and saw his strength, holy cow. In Ophillia's case, the person will just go back to their original position after you use up the quotas. You can once again recruit them if you want.

Me neither, and I freaking love Ophillia and Cyrus prologues. I saw so many people disliking Ophillia's prologue so I wonder if there is something lost in translation. Both Ai Kayano and Yuichiro Umehara have excellent performance too.

There is nothing more satisfying in this game than losing to a boss and then having that "a-ha!" moment of how you should actually approach it. Went from a boss beating me in about three turns to having it locked into a scenario where it was guard broken every turn by Tressa & Olberic (With Arrowstorm and Thousand Spears, respectively) and it's massive Atk/Def debuffed with Thief Primrose. With the weakness/boost system, bosses are like a puzzle with multiple ways to overcome them, and I am all over that.

Found and managed to kill a rare enemy and wow do they give you a nice bonus. I was getting 30-40 EXP in this area not 1000.

Man after reading some of the thread, I almost feel bad that I personally liked H'aanit's chapter 1 a lot. The Middle English is a little wonky to deal with but beyond that I really liked the way it characterized her personality, her relationship with Z'aanta, and her overall world philosophy about life and death in the woods. It's maybe a little cliche sure, but I found it a refreshingly mature take. We even get a peek at some extra lore and connection with the Knights Ardante.

Plus I just really like her voice-work. "Standest thou against me? Then be hunted." Goddamn.

I'm afraid that the rest of her story may disappoint but hers has actually been one of my top 2 or 3 prologues.

I've not even noticed any side quests really. Where do I go to start those? Just been going in a circle around the map collecting party members. If I go too far off the main path I'm severely under leveled it seems.

Completed Cyrus prologue

Ha, there's your typical harem anime protagonist. Thanks for the laugh.
There is a dialogue between him and Ophilia (and other characters) in his second chapter that had me howling.

He's completely oblivious and the game really plays on it

For towns that have a party member they start appearing after you complete their Chapter 1. There's at least 2-3 in each town.

I've only done the prologues for Therion, Alfyn, and Primrose so far. Therion and Alfyn are nearly tied as my favorite, even though they're both very different characters. Primrose was pretty bland overall, though I do appreciate how it ended. Her Path Action is great.

Olberic is next up.

You might be onto something...

I personaly liked every dialogs in both. Everything just works.
I didn't think once : "why is this character doing/saying that ? It makes no sense".

Both characters themselves are just nice.

Finishing Tressa now and she's probably gonna end in the top ones.
I'm also wondering if I would'nt add H'aanit in the top ones cause I liked
her relation to nature during the dungeon/boss part.

Hm. I like the sound of that. Reminds me of DQ towns.

I think I'm gonna take the plunge.

Wooow some of y'all need to stop being so defensive when there's no need to be. Not every JRPG ever has the exact same structure for every single part of the game, no. That's a very weird generalization of the entire genre just to fend off criticism here, especially because variety between the story bits doesn't mean the story bits can't be repetitive. I'll judge for myself when I see each chapter, but it does make me sad to consider that everything to has to follow that pattern compared to, say, Alfyn or Cyrus entirely just doing an investigation and resolving it in town rather than heading off into a dungeon. (...it does make me wonder, though, which of the chapters was the single one Schreier found not to have the same structure.)

Olberic's
chapter 3
is the only one that doesn't follow the pattern - the 31 others are all identical.

Gonna make my part Cyrus and 3 girls for maximum dense lulz in his chapters.

Is it worth it to save and redo the opening act of each characters chapter 2/3/4 to see all the comments between the chapter character and the 7 other travelers? I assume eventually someone will make a youtube that has all the character interactions by chapter.

I reached the 3 hour clock time in the demo (status menu) but the game hasn't stopped. I'm in Rippletide town. Is it safe to continue?

Does it stop when you leave town?

I think the writer is very good at foreshadowing and dropping little hints through dialogues.
Like how Erina said she "needs" to complete the pilgrimage like father did, hinting that she is pushing herself too much; or like how the other girl (sorry forgot her name) feels inferior towards the princess, not only because she can talk with Cyrus easily, but also not as good as her during study.
And I also like H'aanit prologue a lot. The philosophical lines about nature are really nice and refreshing.

I think it stops when the game next auto saves or you manually save. I didn't even realize the game auto saved until I didn't save my "let me show you a random opening" to a friend, didn't save, and found that auto save with my actual carry over save in the main game.

Hmmmm good question. Wish I had tried that to see what happens.

Game was so good I was convinced after ~2 hours so I stopped lol

Have I made a mistake starting with Tressa? She's my protagonist so I can't swap her out, but she doesn't seem as vital as having a Warrior, Mage, Cleric, etc.

I was in the same situation, but I was in Olberic's town. I could still manually save at a save point, and wander around town all I like, but the game prompted the end of the demo when I left town (it then asked me to save in order to allow the save to carry over to the main game).

You can sub job her something else, and merchant is one of the better jobs in the game. Giving BP to others is insanely dumb, rest is insanely dumb, and the ability to use the buy help gives her a huge range of things she can hit the weakness of

Man so I have a full party and I'm kinda lost at what I should do next. Just complete my trek to grab all the characters? Pick someone's chapter 2 and head toward it? Explore the little offroads that were too high level before and look for shrines?

I want to love this game, and in many respects I do, but the absolute disconnect is rearing it's ugly head, so incredibly early.

Therion backstory: "My own two hands are just fine. I have no need to work with you."

Present, meeting other party members: "You want to help me break into the Ravus's? Ugh, fine, try not to get in the way."

I'm sorry, you're a master thief and you have a precise plan to break into a heavily guarded manor and some random dudes walk up, and...

Ugh.

Oh shit I started with Therion so that made a ton more sense when he was the only one in my party, yeah with other party members I guess that does seem a bit weird.

He's in Primrose's town (Sunshade) following her first boss, but I gather that there are other really powerful recruits all around the map. In any case, it's good to know that I can "allure" them again after making use of them.

Does the timer continue while in sleep mode? I had it happened in Xenoblade 2 which gave me +24h not representative of game time.

So as much as I'm enjoying this game, if there's anything awful about it it's the fucking purple chests.

I don't want to use Therion, I planned on having Tressa with Thief subbed on as one of my main members, but the game basically penalizes you for not having him in your party at all times. It's ridiculous, there should be a separate way of opening those things, like buying treasure keys or paying to have Tressa open them for you or something.

Funny thing that happened to me: I am maining Tressa, and when I went into the Darkwoods for H'aanit's quest, she scavenged 280 gold from an "unfortunate soul." But the first thing you encounter upon entering that area? The dead bodies that H'aanit's quarry left behind. Tressa just went though the pockets of one of those corpses right in front of H'aanit!

I have not seen it happen here, but this has been the reason I've feared sleep modes ever since I've had it happen on the PSP once, hah. I don't need the counter to be perfect (I get distracted so much so it won't be...) but it's annoying when it gets inflated. Kept me off using it on the Vita + PS4 for a while.

I'm still going around grabbing everyone, but in order to see the character interactions you have to play through an entire chapter with whichever character interactions you want to see in your party?

I was thinking of this today and I agree, it's the worst mechanic in the game.

Neither Therion nor Tressa have unique in-combat commands, so it's made up for by them having two overworld utilities: purple chests and stealing, and gold-finding and bartering.

From what I've seen so far, the purple chests usually don't have equipment, so you probably aren't missing anything grand.
