What does Musk actually do for climate change? I'm not being snarky I seriously don't know, because electric cars are only marginally better for the environment when you consider the manufacturing process and sources of electricity. So marginal that they basically don't do shit. So does he do something besides make electric cars?
He also has a solar power and electric battery business too.

Neat, he donated to some good causes. I still think he's a jackass for giving money to Republicans. And not some trivial amount either.

Donating to all kinds of political groups and people is exactly what the thread is about. Where is the misleading thing here?

Because it is a non-story.

"Billionaire who owns 2 businesses that rely on favorable government policy donates to political candidates from both parties in equal amount" is a bit less spicy of a headline, right? But that's what the story is. Salon framed the story is the most click-baity, inflammatory way and this thread is proof tactics like that work.

I have some bad news for you

almost no achievements of noteworthy historical relevance were done out of benevolence

this standard you wish to hold Musk to literally does not exist. He's a billionaire, that should already tell the story.

either stick to worshipping Buddhist monks or try to actually gain some perspective.

no stop what are you doing

this is a hate thread, get out go away

The Elon Musk hate here was already hilarious before this. He spends money to both parties, republican and democratic.

He knows that he wont change the thing in the house anyway so why not try get some influenced. But but republicans though!

Anyway like the guy or hate him but at least he does more for climate change than most angry people on the internet or people who have lots of cash.

Yes but Republicans.

It's 2018. The GOP is a threat to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness

You don't know most people, if most people thought like me in my sector, we would save so much energy usage its not even funny.

Instead of using low performance programming languages we should be using next generation native languages for optimal performance.

You did with claiming that people who hate him are uselss haters.
No i wasnt? Stop making stuff up once again.

Saying he does more for climate change than most people on the internet who are bickering and who act like he doesnt really do anything for climate change does not equal this.

I think you read waaaay too much into this.

Also the "Elon Musk hate here" is just pointing out it how it is here on ERA mostly.

Dude even tries to help to kids who where trapped in the cave in thailand and people only say fuck this guy and he must have a hidden agenda .It doesnt matter if he was a help or not.

Elon Musk could save a cat from a tree and he would be shit on.

It's fine if you want to play the "billionaire, businessman, gotta pay all the politicians cuz permits and policies and stuff" card, because that's true and it is what happens

But if you do, then make sure you burn your "saving the world/changing the world" card, because that shit just lost it's power

The idea that that's a defense when supporting the people that have actively poisoned the national discussion/support and acceptance of climate change and actively kill and reverse policy to help - you know - save the world to sell your expensive electric cars is patently absurd.

The ACLU uses the most extreme edge cases to protect the rights of all of us. That's how this shit works.
And I'm saying that's bullshit, that in no way in real life does protecting the rights of Nazi's protect anything for anyone but Nazi's except in some theoretical scenario where a Nazi would need to be protected, which is never.

Lol. The thing is with the kids in the cave he was showboating. Most people helping weren't on twitter posting updates to their fans, Musk was. And after they decided not to use his device he acted like a baby exclaiming they were wrong and it totally would have worked. He was doing the right thing for the wrong reason, which is better than doing the wrong thing but still a negative reflection of his character.

Solar power is cool but the manufacturing process for batteries is super terrible for the environment and emissions. It's one of the reasons electric cars aren't actually very good for fighting climate change.

Virtual power plants are the future. The power storage is what will take renewable energies from solar and wind to the next level where we won't need any more coal etc :

Climate change isn't important when your money helps people systematically destroy the laws the country protecting the Earth.

"Everything is fine, Musk is just like all other Billionaires, he is pay for play for both sides"

Thats the ticket, thats how you get beyond this, you turn around and support bribery.

Well that is a cool concept but you still have to deal with the insane human and environmental costs of the battery manufacturing process, which still creates a ton of highly toxic byproducts even if the actual power for the process were itself sustainably generated.

Like if Musk makes hydrogen fuel cell cars workable and helps create infrastructure for them to become the norm I'll pat his robber baron ass all the way to the bank but I'm not going to sit here and ignore how non-optimal battery powered tech is.

Much like their leader, I don't think the Musk defense force is capable of self-awareness and not talking from both sides of their mouth

And all I've ever said in this thread is that he's no devil or saint. I don't think he's worthy of praise and the only reason I bother criticizing him versus Bezos, Zuckerberg or Gates is because he himself throws himself out there and for some inexplicable reason he has a huge cult of personality behind him. Basically I'm more worried over why so many people decide to near-worship this man, who's no better than anyone else, than I am about Musk's actual personal behaviour.

Well Nate Silver shows he donates to Democrats too pack it up I guess. People want this fuck to be their real life Iron Man moving the world forward with his flashy tech so badly they'll overlook most any transgression.

Nice reading comprehension you've got there. In the quote you posted I said as much as you save for your nonsensical idea that he wants all that money to save the world.
There is zero indication that he wants to save anyone. He is interested in technology, fame, money and the adoration of stans like you.

Well said. It's weird how so many people obsess with him.

What about this angle? Elon giving money to the GOP gives him a spot at the table to influence their shit policy, no?

Or should the GOP be treated like terrorist? No negotiation or influence merited? I saw that take on Twitter by some liberal defenders of Elon's recent GOP contributions.

Oh do tell how he's influenced their shit policy and not simply given them more money that enabled them to spread their bs further.

Yeah the "He doens't actually support them, he is just engaging with them in legal bribery' Defense was already tried and fell flat.

Maybe if he didnt fund them, they would have a less chance of being in power, and thus he wouldn't need a seat at the Shit Table of Republicans?

This angle is what Musk is also going with and you know, is monumentally stupid because it's evidently not going to help anything at all. How nice that Republicans at least pretend to hear him out instead of rejecting his calls and then continue with their usual business anyway.

How about the angle that funding the party is directly helping said party?

Elon Musk is a registered Independent Moderate. On one hand, he likes millions of dollars in tax cuts, and on the other he likes getting billions of dollars in government subsidies for his businesses.

Wealthy dude wants to stay wealthy.

Shocker. Truly.
It's goofy to think that Republicans want businesses to succeed and the economy to grow more than Democrats.

The obvious failing of Republican economic policy is less apparent to those whose ability to sleep at night hinges on the belief that their having thousands of times more wealth than normal people is wholly based on their superior talents and work ethic. It's delusional Ayn Rand shit. It doesn't actually make them richer (but arguably might make them more powerful by keeping the poor poorer).
