I'm a bit confused that people frequenting a message board like this are apparently not equiped to find out about good games on a platform.

Metacritic, the eShop thread, the best sellers lists, one of the ten thousand recommendation topics, just looking for genres that interest you through the store search and reading up on stuff that seems interesting. You don't need to browse through the complete list of games every single time.

And if you already own a Switch, a simple solution is just checking the store every week for new releases and wishlisting those games that stand out or appeal to you.

I have not looked into any of them, but I am willing to unilaterally declare all of them are shovelware trash. Games that do not assault my eyeballs with a $50m+ marketing budget are worthless and don't even count as real games.

Got my Switch on release and I have 8 games now:D

Nintendo is terrible at marketing and setting up the E-shop. I only open it when I already know a game I want to purchase.

What exactly was the point then? Because I'm apparently missing it too.
"Switch is releasing more games than XB1 and PS4"

Mkay? I mean ya, when a lot of them are ports and not "new games" (ie something that isn't currently on a console) then of course the new system is going to be releasing "more" games than the other two established platforms which already had those games launch years prior. It's pretty much just a weird comparison to me.

I don't think those numbers mean much. In the end, the quality of the Swtich's game library will be determined by 1st party, 3rd party and exclusive games. Certain super high quality indi games will be mentioned, too. Same with the Wii and 3DS library. Both systems had a lot of great games, but I would argue at least triple the amount was trash.

According to Wikipedia, 3DS has around 1285 games.

With Nintendo releasing 15-25 games per week, it looks like Switch will catch up quickly to the 3DS library too.

FWIW, compared with the 3DS, Switch already is (at least) on par regarding critically acclaimed games. For the games with 7 reviews or more on Metacritic, today:
75+ MC. 3DS: 146 games, Switch: 169 games
80+ MC. 3DS: 89 games, Switch: 90 games
85+ MC. 3DS: 36 games, Switch: 33 games
90+ MC. 3DS: 6 games, Switch: 8 games
95+ MC. 3DS: 0 games, Switch: 2 games

And when taking the games with less than 7 reviews on Metacritic into account as well:
75+ MC. 3DS: 164 games, Switch: 205 games
80+ MC. 3DS: 95 games, Switch: 105 games
85+ MC. 3DS: 40 games, Switch: 36 games
90+ MC. 3DS: 7 games, Switch: 9 games
95+ MC. 3DS: 0 games, Switch: 2 games

Bit disingenuous considering a good amount of those are games that have long been on those other two platforms

The first 2 years of PS4 were also a port fest.

I'd like numbers on this, cause i feel what is driving Switch right now besides Nintendo games are indies, and there are a lot of them new on Switch. But even if they aren't, like i said PS4 also got tons of ports in its early lifecycle, so i don't find the comparison weird at all.

If Switch has more titles than those 2 consoles is merely because indies are even more common now than 4-5 years ago, and to be fair i think Nintendo is doing an even better job than Sony at pushing them.

PS4 and XB1 were also port and remaster heavy their first year+ though. It's still a 1:1 comparison in that sense, you're doing an aligned launch year comparison between 3 port heavy platforms. It's not really weird or disingenuous at all.

What an odd thread. Take away all games released on Steam/PC first and all consoles are technically port heavy then. There's been a decent amount of console ports that went over to PC as well.

Shouldn't we appreciate ports?

I'd trade 800 of those wonderful games for a good Castlevania or Advance Wars. Is an Elite Beat Agents 2 too much to ask for?

Guess it's nice to have options. Wish so much of them weren't garbage steam and mobile shovelware though.

It's fine but Nintendo really needs to redesign their storefront

Why would we take those games away though?

Nintendo surely wants to become the Steam of consoles admitting lots of games. Sure, lots of remasters, ports, indies.. .But when the barrel of good and decent games runs out, we're starting to get the crappy games and it will get the same complaints lesser known develeopers have about Valve letting lots of subpar quality games in the storefront.

I mean, during years, little developers praised the lack of games on Wii U and Switch that made their games attractive and that can change in just six months.
But it didn't change in 6 months?

If I was an indie dev and saw that alot of you PS4/Xbox folks were calling indie games trash and shovelware I'd put my games on the Switch too. People go where they're wanted.

Easier to port, so most games comes to the platform. I don't see the issue of having more games. It's just the storefront that needs to be fixed.

I could say the same for Steam as well, but there are more ways to explore games on that Platform. eShop is too basic.

I really hope they redesign the eshop soon. I loved the simplicity when I bought it at launch, but I just can't keep up with releases now.

browsing those stores is actually nice compared to the Switch, and the rate at which trash is being added to the Switch store
Ehhh...their store fronts may be better for you, but that's entirely subjective. As for the rate, that is false. There is as much trash coming to the PS4, Xbox and Steam as there is coming to the Switch. Just look at recent releases for any of those platforms. Tons of trash. I'm not going to start a list war, but just go to metacritic and look at recent PS4 releases. In the past month most of the 50+ games released are garbage. Go on. Take a look and report back. The rate among all platforms is similar. You're joking if you think otherwise.

I hope Nintendo isn't resting on its laurels with the eShop. I know it said it was going to update the eShop for visibility/reorganization, and that's been done--but I hope that was the limit of its work on the eShop. There are still fundamental issues with the marketplace and visibility.

It sure has a lot of trash though

So does ERA. Half my posts are garbage! :X

It really does have a lot of great games. The rate they're coming in is staggering, at least compared to basically every other Nintendo console ever.

Good post, I'd be curious to see this type of analysis for every game on the platform, though I know that's a hell of a lot of work.

That's different from curation through the platform holder though. A game being denied release on a platform for arbitrary reasons is bullshit. Steam's filtering options, curated lists, community sharing etc. should be an industry wide feature but they are an absolute necessity on Steam more than anywhere else. You will never have anything like Steam in terms of number of releases any time soon on consoles. The only reason the Switch is getting like 20 games a week is because a sizeable number of those are late ports. Nintendo's target of 30 releases a month is ludicrous in the long term.

Nintendo needs to overhaul the eShop UI like yesterday but I find the notion that 20 games a week are difficult to handle quite ridiculous. I guess Nintendo was right with drip feeding Virtual Console games all along.

What do you consider shovelware?

People calling half of the library trash or shovelware is entirely disrespectful for devs and is ignoring the actual situation of the shop by lying.
There's a difference between a game being just okay and being Life of Black Tiger levels of game.
