HOLY SHIT that is bold! O_o What other examples have there been of this? I wonder if this risks annoying buyers, who feel they could've just waited in such an event.

I am aware that the first Inazuma Eleven is going to be free for a limited time on 3DS in Japan but that's obviously to help promote Inazuma Eleven Ares on Switch/PS4/Mobile.

Kind of a perverse incentive.

Just encouraging people to not buy it, since they might be able to get it for free.

Could be enough of a novelty to generate attention anyway though.

Hmm.

Reminds me of that time a developer said he would pay for everyone's copy if it outsold another game releasing the same week (month?) even though it was obvious it wasn't going to happen.
I want to say the competing game was a Madden or Fifa?

*edit* It was for Wolfenstein 2009 and it had to outsell Madden 10

Neat of them to say, especially if they would do it if the situation happened, but considering they only sold 23% of that specific number, they were probably saying that hypothetical as a joke.

To add to my previous post, the game is pretty great. I bought it months ago due to a thread on this forum recommending it and had a blast playing it with a friend.
It's worth the price.

It's not bold or a poor business decision. It's just free PR (that people like the OP are gobbling up) because it's not something he'll ever have to deliver on, but it still makes him look great to fans.

That was not wise. People are going to latch onto the "It might be free part," not the "We don't expect to ever actually sell 250k copies."

Should probably give an incentive to those that purchase the game prior to the 250k mark -- something like the NBA Playgrounds folk did by giving Shaq Fu away for free to those whom purchased NBA Playgrounds ahead of a certain date.

Well it worked as PR at least since I hadn't even heard about it previously and now had to look it up. And it looks like fun!

This game is currently GWG on xbox. So 1) maybe you can get it free now anyways, 2) devs just got paid by MS

It's only at 52k? That a travesty. It's such a great game. Deserves way more.

Reading the title I was annoyed thinking they sold more and this was realistic... But tbh, it deserves those sales.

Nintendo won't allow them just to offer games like this for free on the eShop...not the smartest statement.

Hasn't that game been available for majority of Switch's life?

Guess it's struggle city, and this is just publicity stunt.

These guys seem great, I've heard pretty good things about the game and it's always nice seeing devs so upbeat about their work.

That sounds fine to me. Keeps people in the eshop ecosystem. I think Nintendo should encourage more freeware, not just free-to-play. If someone goes into the shop to get the free game, other things will grab their attention as well. I went to grab Fallout Shelter when it came out, and then thought "well while I'm here let's see what's on sale, or what's new". I feel like that's a good thing for Nintendo and the eShop (if only the interface was better.....)

Well, I bought it already. There was a period near the end of 2017 when I wanted something to play with my friends on Switch, and this had just come out. Very nice little game, we finished it in a couple of sessions and it was quite fun. I never tried the single player, but it's definitely recommended if you can play it with three friends.

Not a good thing to say and it doesn't matter who you are. I would be pissed if I bought any game and they made it free for everyone else through a scheme like this.
