Yeah you are given two options, poisoning or hanging. That's not really good.
Thank you for this profound insight into American politics, which you no doubt attained through thorough study of this country's history, culture, demographic patterns, and social movements.

Because surely you wouldn't argue that complex ideas and concepts can be explained by pithy punchlines from privileged white male comedians! I think better of you than that, no matter what anyone else in this thread says.

I think complex ideas and concepts require more than two party system. That's all. I'm no expert in US politics or politics in general though I absolutely admit that. I've listened and read some Chomsky too! Not just Carlin, though he calls it one party system where the ruling party is the business party, so even less generous. Carlin is much funnier.

Loved Carlin's stuff. He also summed up pro-lifers pretty succinctly.

I wish with all my heart that he had lived to see the rise of Trump. All his warnings came true.

He's got some great bits/rants, yeah. But I don't consider him a hugely hilarious comedian who was dropping bonafide classics.

I'd call him inconsistent but then again, it's an incredibly large body of work and he was doing this shit til the very end. He definitely influenced some of my thinking when I was younger.

(oh btw, Pryor is my number 1)

Was watching a video of his stand up where he was ripping on people who carried camcorders around with them everywhere. If only he could've seen the age of smartphones and social media.

I didn't find his crotchety old man stuff nearly as good as everything that led up to, but he was still usually on point.

I mean, I love Carlin, but one of his bits was about how he doesn't vote because all politicians are the same.

Yep. Part of his appeal I think was that he was just generally cynical, and it's easy to feel smug and smart and nod along with him when in reality he mostly just complained about things and had no ideas or put any effort into changing things.

He's certainly a hero to a lot of toxic atheists.

He's my absolute favorite comedian of all time. When you listen to his later interviews it's clear that his misanthropy is borne out of disappointment that people and society aren't better. He was a disappointed idealist who was way too smart to think things were getting better.

The GOAT and a personal hero of mine. Nobody was as articulate as him when it comes to stand up IMO.

George Carlin would not survive in today's climate.

He would have done fine. The man was very nuanced and I'm sure he would have find a way to change it up if he had to. Sure there are peeps nowadays who are not only quick to condemn but will bury their heads in the sand when told different but that existed then as well.

One of my biggest regrets in life was not seeing him live when he came to town because I was saving money for something else. I thought I would just catch him next time he came to town. There was no next time.

The GOAT!

He was funny and highly skilled with words, but he was a misanthrope. After a certain point there was no hope to be found in anything he joked about. He was firmly on the side of comedy as a coping mechanism against reality, and he didn't seem to find value in satire as a means for change.
To his credit, this is apparent in like, 89% of comedic peoples lives and careers.

This always cracks me up from his later years.

"Hey, did you hear? Phil Davis died."
"Phil Davis? I just saw him yesterday."
"Yeah? Didn't help. He died anyway. Apparently, the simple act of your seeing him did not slow his cancer down."

I don't think any person could watch a few George Carlin specials in a row and say "yep, I agreed with everything he said." But you will hear 100 things that would make you laugh, think, and/or despair.

and yeah if he was alive today and, god forbid, had a twitter account, he would find plenty of people from all around lining up to take a swing at him

Yo what is with people and their hardon for slapping some text next to a comedian's face as if that makes the argument profound and unassailable?

Carlin wouldn't have had a Twitter account. He'd know better.

For sure one of, and arguably the best, to ever do it.
There are not too many people I say this about but I can say it very easily about Carlin...
If you disagree with anything he has to say I can guarantee we will not get along.

One of the greats for sure. Him, Pryor, and Chapelle are my top 3. Pryor was the goat though.

As a black man he was one of the few white comedians I liked

One of my white co workers recommended John mulaney but I wasn't feeling him as much

He was probably the best white male comedian ever. Fucking hated the society his kind had created.

He's being MLKedright now. Ignore the people who think Carlin would've been more pissed at SJWs than fascists.

One of the GOATs. I don't think he would have been obtuse to the current times but he wouldn't have hesitated to try to find a way to make each and every one of us uncomfortable.

I miss him. He dipped out right before Obama was elected. With the shit that's happened, it really would've been something to hear his takes on everything leading up to where we are now. You know Trump would definitely be bitching about him on Twitter.

I'm coming back to this thread later just to see the clips he's so good. Don't forget his cameo in Jay and Silent Bob

Not my transcript of Carlin's late life summation of the American Dream, but the video can be seen here.

"There's a reason education SUCKS, and it's the same reason it will never, ever, EVER be fixed.

It's never going to get any better, don't look for it, be happy with what you've got.

Because the owners, the owners of this country don't want that. I'm talking about the real owners now, the BIG owners! The Wealthy… the REAL owners! The big wealthy business interests that control things and make all the important decisions.

Forget the politicians. They are irrelevant. The politicians are put there to give you the idea that you have freedom of choice. You don't. You have no choice! You have OWNERS! They OWN YOU. They own everything. They own all the important land. They own and control the corporations. They've long since bought, and paid for the Senate, the Congress, the state houses, the city halls, they got the judges in their back pockets and they own all the big media companies, so they control just about all of the news and information you get to hear. They got you by the balls.

They spend billions of dollars every year lobbying, lobbying, to get what they want. Well, we know what they want. They want more for themselves and less for everybody else, but I'll tell you what they don't want:

They don't want a population of citizens capable of critical thinking. They don't want well informed, well educated people capable of critical thinking. They're not interested in that. That doesn't help them. Thats against their interests.

Thats right. They don't want people who are smart enough to sit around a kitchen table and think about how badly they're getting fucked by a system that threw them overboard 30 fucking years ago. They don't want that!

You know what they want? They want obedient workers. Obedient workers, people who are just smart enough to run the machines and do the paperwork. And just dumb enough to passively accept all these increasingly shitty jobs with the lower pay, the longer hours, the reduced benefits, the end of overtime and vanishing pension that disappears the minute you go to collect it, and now they're coming for your Social Security money. They want your retirement money. They want it back so they can give it to their criminal friends on Wall Street, and you know something? They'll get it. They'll get it all from you sooner or later cause they own this fucking place! It's a big club, and you ain't in it! You, and I, are not in the big club.

By the way, it's the same big club they use to beat you over the head with all day long when they tell you what to believe. All day long beating you over the head with their media telling you what to believe, what to think and what to buy. The table has tilted folks. The game is rigged and nobody seems to notice. Nobody seems to care! Good honest hard-working people; white collar, blue collar it doesn't matter what color shirt you have on. Good honest hard-working people continue, these are people of modest means, continue to elect these rich cock suckers who don't give a fuck about you….they don't give a fuck about you… they don't give a FUCK about you.

They don't care about you at all… at all… AT ALL. And nobody seems to notice. Nobody seems to care. Thats what the owners count on. The fact that Americans will probably remain willfully ignorant of the big red, white and blue dick thats being jammed up their assholes everyday, because the owners of this country know the truth.

It's called the American Dream, because you have to be asleep to believe it.
