Eh the reality is if you're going to have a pretty open storefront there's only so much you can do with the garbage ratio. What steam doesn't get enough credit for are all the tools it has to help sift through it as well as ease of searching for things. Like if I want to check dlc for a game I have I go to my library, click on the game and hit the dlc button on the side and I get taken to a page with all of the game's dlc as well as steam marking which ones I have already and which are on my wishlist, which makes it easier to find certain dlc I want and skip all the other crap (looking at you Paradox games). Not to mention the discovery queue and the store automatically tailoring itself based on what I've clicked on, which is the reason why I don't see most of the shit Jim Sterling whines about routinely.

It's far from perfect but as these consoles keep moving to open their gates a bit more and letting everything in, their lack of options to help people sift through it all really show up. That goes for all consoles not just Switch.

That's different from curation through the platform holder though. A game being denied release on a platform for arbitrary reasons is bullshit. Steam's filtering options, curated lists, community sharing etc. should be an industry wide feature but they are an absolute necessity on Steam more than anywhere else. You will never have anything like Steam in terms of number of releases any time soon on consoles. The only reason the Switch is getting like 20 games a week is because a sizeable number of those are late ports. Nintendo's target of 30 releases a month is ludicrous in the long term.

Nintendo needs to overhaul the eShop UI like yesterday but I find the notion that 20 games a week are difficult to handle quite ridiculous. I guess Nintendo was right with drip feeding Virtual Console games all along.

Honest question, as I do not own a switch, how much of it is shovelware?

What do you consider shovelware?

Hard to say exactly, but games that seem like they were mobile games

Gear.Club Unlimited

Miles and Kilo

both of those were smartphone games so it's kinda difficult

Nintendo surely wants to become the Steam of consoles admitting lots of games. Sure, lots of remasters, ports, indies.. .But when the barrel of good and decent games runs out, we're starting to get the crappy games and it will get the same complaints lesser known develeopers have about Valve letting lots of subpar quality games in the storefront.

I mean, during years, little developers praised the lack of games on Wii U and Switch that made their games attractive and that can change in just six months.
This will not happen unless good games just stop being developed. There are hundreds of great indie titles that have yet to be ported to the system, and hundreds more promising games in development for the system.

When I think Shovelware, I typically think of Wii games like "Imagine: Party Babyz" and "My Horse and Me". Or something like "Meme Run" on the Wii U.

The idea that something is "shovelware" just because it's "indie", "2D" or "low-budget" is a terrible attitude to have.

Realistically, the vast majority of indie games coming to Switch are older ports of PS4/XB1/VITA games like Crypt of the Necromancer, Night in the Woods, Cosmic Star Heroine, Undertale, Hyper Light Drifter, etc.

Affordable dev kit, tons of middleware and the relative absence of *Jim Sterling impression* Triple A studios makes it a fertile little indie platform.

And for this reason I think the average quality is on the high side atm.

What a difference. I know Reggie used to say it's all about quality not quantity.
It's not like it's filled with shovelware. There's a lot of average games but it's mostly due to old ports and many indie games coming in. Not really quickly made shitty games (yet).

They really need a better storefront. The one they have now can't really support that kind of volume, especially when the standards are a little more lax than they probably should be.

I feel like the definition of shovelware has changed since the 7th generation. Like, you don't need to have nearly as much experience with gamedev to get something on a big platform as you used to. You're seeing less "bad games that appeal to non-gamers" and more that're just bad, if not horrible.

The lack of options for browsing the eShop reminds me a bit of the Windows Store, except it's not a problem for the Windows Store because nothing releases there. Zing.

As someone who is very happy with his Switch, 99% of ten appear to be garbage Indy rubbish that buries the good stuff on the Nintendo store. If it wasn't for this place I wouldn't have known to pick up Hollow Knight for example.

It desperately needs curating.

Metacritic points to 123 70 or higher Metascores games on Switch this year. Xbox One has 59. PS4 has 86.

The Switch is doing fine on the quality front.
Hats off to you for doing the entire year. I'm on mobile, so it lists them one by one.

It's crazy how many games have too few reviews to average. For example, Air Mail is fucking awesome. A port of a mobile game, but seriously the bastard child of Nights Into Dreams visual design and Pilot Wings gameplay...like 3 reviews exist on the internet, but would be in the high 7's low 8's.

Yeah, the flip side of this many games releasing is that it's hard for anyone to keep up with them all- including critics haha!
And yikes, I didn't know Metacritic is like that on mobiles...

I browsed the eShop today. They're was a ton of trash. For me a huge number of games isn't really a good thing if they're all indie. It makes the store experience tedious, like the Android store, and makes the true gems harder to find.

Same, or the games that are good are games I already own on PS4 or previous consoles.

As I said before you get some gems like Hollow Knight but aside from that I don't buy much outside Nintendo's first party titles.

That's less to do with the games being trash or the library being lacking and more to do with your own disinterest in those games. There have been more than a few quality titles outside of Nintendo's own on the Switch. Some of them being on another platform or most of them being indie titles doesn't diminish that

Yes, indie games are uniformly inferior experiences, and if there's a lot of them on a platform, that platform's library isn't worth considering.
The one thing I will agree with is that Nintendo needs to fix their damn storefront.

Spent a whole hour browsing third party stuff the other day and found exactly one I'm interested in - a $3 mahjong game from the jp store.

At this rate I'll have to use metacritic or hltb to actually discover games.

Yep, but I just wish they weren't late ports because then I would have bought them on Switch over PS4.

For example I love Crash collection and Dark Souls Remastered, but I have them on PS4. So when they come out on Switch I'm mostly indifferent. If they came out at the same time on Switch...I probably would have bought them on Switch instead of PS4. And since I'm not double dipping I just have no interest.

That will start changing by later this year, hopefully.

Well I won't disagree on that. In the case of Crash Bandicoot, there's no helping it, but, in the case of Dark Souls, yeah that's a damn shame and I don't fault people for being upset, especially with the lack of details and updates. That being said, I do think more games will be able to release day and date going forward, just not all or necessarily even most of them

Would be great if we started getting stuff like Shadow of the Tomb Raider, the Yakuza games, or hell...even Red Dead Redemption 2 but it seems very unlikely.
Well a lot of those games wouldn't exactly be possible without a ton of cutbacks and, even then, those cutbacks may not necessarily worth it if the game runs and looks like hell. Out of all of those, the non-PS4-only Yakuza games could come to the Switch as well as the previous two Tomb Raider games. I'm mainly hoping for more AA games to make their way over, alongside AAA games that are possible, like Doom 2 or Resident Evil 7

What's that porno game on the eShop that has the horrible Engrish description? In the description it has hilarious lines like "MAKE DRESS IN BONDAGE TO HAPPY SUCCEED HER". It's like 4.99 and then has a TON of DLC which is just different girls to get coerce into getting naked.

I was kind of blown away to see that sort of game on a Nintendo console but hey, it's 2018. Most of the eShop stuff just seems like garbage overall.

Night in the Woods
Crypt of the Necrodancer
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
West of Loathing
Shantae: Half-Genie Hero Ultimate Edition
Just Shapes & Beats
Mega Man Legacy Collection
Runbow

That'll give you a place to start.

High end AAA stuff won't be coming to the Switch, but we can start expecting that the stuff that does launches at the same time as it does on other platforms. We're already seeing it with Valkyria Chronicles 4, Tales of Vesperia DE, Shining Resonance Refrain, and so on.

It's just a real shame. Imagine the new Resident Evil 2 remake on Switch? But it won't happen because Capcom is just putting RE7 "on the cloud." I mean it's the same Nintendo third party curse we've had dating back to the N64.

Only now I'm old enough to own multiple consoles unlike when I was a teen in the N64 days.

It's weird that a game like Cosmic Star Heroine was rejected by Nintendo last year, but now they are just opening the floodgates.

928 games and nothing to play.

I'm currently still working on Xenoblade 2 and Rabbids, but I still feel something of a drought this year, despite the positive avalanche of quality indies. It'll probably feel that way til Animal Crossing or the next big single player AAA nintendo adventure comes out.
