That's good but I don't get why they didn't just do it like Chrono Trigger or something.

Right now exploring is really difficult and frustrating, I'm not having a good time at all tbh. The battle system is really good but they've brought over my least favourite aspect of 90s JRPG.

Are you running? I've noticed a pretty sizeable increase in encounter rate when running

Feck went into a higher level cave and wanted to see what the enemies were like did two battles that were long but not overly hard. Got everyone up 3 levels and decided to go back out to go elsewhere. Right at the entrance another battle. So I'm like fine I'll polish this off then leave. They one shot my team...

I doubt they will but there would be nothing to stop SE publishing it themselves
Nah, as we've seen with Capcom, you can easily lose Nintendo's support in publishing if you wrong them. If Nintendo and SE agreed that Octopath is exclusive then it probably needs to remain that for SE to get that juicy support in the future.

ofc, just speculation.

So i watch the CE unboxing loved it, but then when i got it on hand, it just felt so "meh".

So i just unloaded the contents of the CE on ebay quickly. Was able to get my copy of the game relatively cheap that way.

Started as Olberic and dude is a fucking tank. At like 1000hp already at level 14 and enemies don't seem to damage him much. Gear really makes the characters.
Yeah, but then you meet enemies that are neither weak to sword or spear and you're like welp guess I'll just attack whatever and build up BP.

Just met H'aanit and she's definitely the most easy mode. She has access to sword, spear, axe, bow and lightning. She can heal and if the boss is weak to bows, she can break 5/6 defenses by herself with her rain arrow skill if she has decent enough accuracy.

Probably gonna ditch her since I don't the game to be TOO easy.

Battles aren't long when you have a Cyrus that can easily be boosted to do 10k damage in a few turns. :p and I've not even optimized a party, just rotate to keep everyone evenly levelled behind him.

Played another three hours today and got all eight characters. This game is really, really good. I think I'm going to level all of them up to at least 20 and get better equipment and then do Chapter 2. BTW, what's a good solution to ensure Cyrus doesn't run out of SP as often as he does now? I don't like skipping character turns to use plums on him and Ophilia doesn't have any SP spells.

There is an Apothecary Skill (Alfyn) to get SP for every attack and then Scholar (Cyrus's Job) has the skill "Vim and Vigor" that regens HP at the end of the turn - it's the 3,000 JP skill, I think.

I use both on Cyrus.

Cyrus is very useful because he can discover enemies weakness at the start of the combat or using Analyze and is a must for me (and he's magic is amazingly powerful). With those two skills he's much more powerful.

The second jobs can be found on Shrines near some towns.

Also, a FYI for something I missed for over 10h: support skills can also be boosted with BP, increasing the turn duration. I facepalmed when noticing that.

You want to be scrutinizing (or Alfyn's equivalent which can't fail but is LV-based) everything. Besides the interesting backstories and hidden items, you sometimes gain special information that shows up in your inventory & can be used in quests, as well as bonuses that affect the town like "Stealing is easier" and "The store has new equipment." Challenging, on the other hand, you only need to do it when it's the solution to a quest or if the character is blocking a door.

Saw some complaints about needing to grind from reviewers and I'm not seeing it as long as you're thorough with sidequests & exploration and aren't OCD about keeping trying to keep everybody's LVs even. I thought I'd go around unlocking the secondary jobs before doing chapter 2 and I'm already in my mid-20s on my main party.
Thanks again!
Yea so far I haven't have the need to grind, I've been exploring almost every corner and usually hit the level required just nice.

Anyway I just bought this House Landar Records for 6k from an old man, can't find any info about it, what does it do.

I wondfer if there is a mpa out there yet marking all the locations. I hate missing optional dungeons or losing track of which one i completed.

In my experience you just continue to gather all kinds of random shit by playing and then sometime you find a NPC and a cutscene will trigger and a sidequest you didn't even know exist got completed.

You should kind of hold out for balance assessments. A character getting 6,7,8,9,10 types isn't that unusual, due to sub-classing, etc.

controller pro question

You know about the parameter in the console's settings about using the Pro Controller with a USB cable (for data communication)? Does this feature work when the controller is plugged in the dock, or only if it's plugged directly in the Switch tablet somehow?

Thanks

Well what a ride, 7 hours in and as suspected I just love the game. Sidequests are really good and the absence of handholding is really refreshing.

Started with Cyrus then went to recruit Primrose since I liked the character. Some sidequests needed Olberic's ability so I recruited him next. He has a really tough boss btw.

Now starting with Therion. Party around level 14, cant wait to resume my journey.

Yeah, the problem with Olberic is that he only has swords and spears to break defenses, though Tressa's Pass BP ability matches up well with Olberic's AOE skills to speed up battles.

The problem with Cyrus is, while he has high burst, his spells only break defenses one time, unless you use the lvl. 2 spells but those are 22SP. So you need someone else to break defenses for him.

Played this for a bit. Started with Cyrus. The music is lovely!

But OH MY GOD tone down the depth of field effect. It's way too strong. They're blurring shit just a few feet in the foreground. Reminds me of 3D Dot Game Heroes, and not in a good way.

Capturing dungeon bosses at about 1% capture rates...

TFW you only get to summon it once.
TFW you'll never ever summon it.

Cyrus main. Got H'aanit and Therion.
I'm in front of Primrose which will be my last party member for now.

Battles give a very good amount of points. I'm constantly levelling up and all despite having Cyrus passive 95% of the time on.

Loving the game so far. After getting primrose I'll do more side quests/exploration and begin second chapters of the 4 characters.

I didn't expect the game to be that special. I like it a lot more than Bravely.

About to collect my 4th character Primrose and holy shit what a change of tone.

This game can be dark.

So, uh, there's a whole lot of skits, right? If you're always given one at every opportunity, then that means each character needs to have one for each of the (3?) slots per Chapter 2? So 7*3*8=168 skits for Chapter 1 are possible? Or if you don't have the right party members, you just don't get a skit at each of the flag marks?

And then it gets more complicated in Chapters 3 and 4 as you get 3 person and 4 person skits?

I don't mind the segregated and limited characterization. Skits for side conversations are more fitting than bloating up every story scene with extraneous dialogue.

Yeah it's also the low angle in some sections combined with bloom and blur that contribute to getting lost in some areas. For me anyway.

I one case there was this fisherman in Alfyn's town lamenting the issues with the fish population in the river.

I walk out of town and see this other fisherman guy who's description says he's a poaching asshole. Without giving it much thought I beat him up.

Turns out it that solved the other fisherman's plight.

This is interesting. I did the same quest, but I did it by stealing some better bait for the fisherman.

One side quest I enjoyed was one where the answer was to obviously fight the guy... but? YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO LOSE
How are people feeling about the story so far?
Im enjoying the little stories and the world as a whole. I came into this not expecting a generic over arching jrpg plot and Im vastly enjoying my time

Seriously, who thought it'd be a good idea to literally just flash the enemy's HP for a second in a weird spot when using analyze

I'm not sure if I hit a bug or I just missed the cue of what to do next, but I'm stuck in Alfyn's chapter 1. I just fought the boss and gave the venom to Zeph, but nothing is happening now. I've tried to pass time at the Inn, going back into the field, and talking to people in town, but no luck so far, Zeph just gives me the same dialogue each time.

I know the skits are supposed to be at the taverns, but how do I access them? Do I need to reach a certain point in a character's story?
