I'm a big Nintendo fan and truth be told, I've never really been in to first person shooters.

There are, however, two main exceptions - Goldeneye & Perfect Dark.

I loved these games so much. The secret agent and stealth aspects, the mission structure and how this changed depending on difficulty, as well as of course the split screen multiplayer.

Ever since those days I've always felt a small hole in Nintendo's library. Me and my friends still gather to play the likes of Mario Kart, Smash, Bomberman, Street Fighter & Fifa/PES but back in the day, we had the 4 player split screen of GE & PD added to that list as well.

In my head I always imagined that maybe Retro would develop a spiritual sequel to the classic Rare games to fill that void with a robust single player mode and online multiplayer with both single and 4 player split screen options.

One of the bigger selling points would be the return of a local 4 player split screen mode. Imagine how well that would go down on TV ads showing off the Switch? I think we've reached a point over 20 years on from GE where people would get a huge nostalgia overload, and it would really sell the local multiplayer aspect of the Switch Nintendo love to show so much.

A reason I've never been into other FPS games so much is that I've never really been into the dual analogue control set up. I'm left handed and my right thumb is so slow and inaccurate when it comes to using the right analogue stick - not really an issue with smash attacks or camera control in a game like Zelda. Goldeneye & Perfect Dark never presented this problem of course. Neither did the Metroid Prime games because the first one was a mainly single stick affair and the third game used the Wii remote as a pointer, which I found a lot easier (faster and more accurate) to use than a second analogue stick.

I must admit that the introduction of gyro control in Doom and Wolvenstein has me intrigued about those sorts of games for the first time, but of course, it's that stealth element, mission structure and mainly 4 player local multiplayer I really want to see brought back to the FPS table by Nintendo - with gyro control options of course!

Edit - Please don't turn this into an is Metroid Prime a FPS game or not discussion.

Yes

Well, not necessarily in-house. They could partner with someone like Splash Damage who knows how to make FPS.

Wrecking Ball in Overwatch is Samus on steroids, that's all the Nintendo FPS goodness we need!

Nintendo doesn't need to cover every genre. The closest you'll get is prime 4.

An overwatch/hero shooter with nintendo characters would be really fun.

Nintendo isn't going to develop a hero shooter, they pretty much covered that base with a nintendo spin with splatoon (which is a TPS not a FPS, but still).

Ninty all but lost the FPS and traditional fighter from their stable when Rare took off. Those weren't 'in-house', but still, more diversity is nice.

I consider Metroid Prime an FPS. More aimed towards adventure and exploration, but still.

They have the best third person shooter out there, so I don't see how much adding a first person shooter would do for them, the genres cover pretty similar ground. I don't think we'll see anything first person from Nintendo besides Metroid Prime

I think it's been a missed opportunity for them, I would've loved to see a unique take from Nintendo on the fps genre, preferable multiplayer.

Anyway it's a competitive and crowded genre so I never felt like I missed out too much but you always wonder what a little Nintendo magic might do

While not first person, I feel Splatoon occupies the competitive shooter slot extremely well

Not sure really. Good FPS are usually violent and mature themed, with a story to match. Not saying you couldn't have one without that but I don't think the genre plays to Nintendo's stenghths

I think Nintendo made the smart move going with Splatoon. Very successful competitive shooter, but with their own spin on it. No point in forcing out a game that's not your style.

also metroid prime is a fps, its in first person and you shoot

Nintendo likes to put their own spin on game genres. Instead of a third person shooter we have something like Splatoon where the focus is splatting the ground and not your opponents. So Metroid Prime is their take on the FPS genre despite it not being a traditional FPS.

Don't expect a regular FPS from Nintendo.

They could and should do a big shooter internally, maybe it's MP4, maybe it's whatever retro has been working on

Nintendo tried before.

- Metroid Prime Hunters
- Geist
- The Conduit

They are either generic or experimental. And they mostly sucked.

It is better when they inject their own style into the shooter genre, such as mixing their best genre "adventure" in Metroid Prime, or incorporating the quirky and innovative gameplay in Splatoon.

Sure, as long as it is single player focused and non-lethal secret-agent style, i am all for it :)

bloodbath or multiplayer heresy ? nha, leave it to 3rd parties, don't soil your name.

The Conduit? lol What the fuck does that have to do with Nintendo?
They have plenty of talent to do it, they just need the incentive. Hunters was made as a showcase for the DS (graphics + touchscreen + transfer play + online) more than it was its own game.
Never played Geist, but it was heavily influenced by Miyamoto, and for some things, that's not always a good thing.

If one of their development teams has a cool idea for a FPS game then absolutely but they don't need to force it.

if they have an idea to build on from the ground up they should go for it. but it's really not their forte (unless outsourcing would count) and i think putting an FPS on switch just for the sake of having one there wouldn't end so hot

Yes they should. They do such a great job covering so many genres, and they tend to always bring something fresh and new to the table. Splatoon is a perfect example.

Personally I'd like a hero shooter with a Smash-like roster. A serious go at making Metroid relevant in that space could be interesting. F-Zero bounty hunters vs outlaws could be cool. Something entirely new altogether could also be fun; it's always nice to get new IPs from Nintendo.

I'm expecting a pretty robust MP component in MP4. 'Hunters' was decent for it's time, I thing extrapolating from there, maybe even include a 4 player co-op mission-based thing, like with Federation Force??

Not necessarily EPD, but they must acquire western studios in order to fill the fps and other genres gap due to lack of third party support from major publishers.

I have always wanted the Super Mario Galaxy/Splatoon Campaign of First Person Shooters. Titanfall 2 got close as have other games, but I genuinely would love to see how Nintendo EPD could apply the 4-Stage Level Development to an FPS interface. A colourful aesthetic with cute enemy designs and cool level gimmicks too.

Not necessarily only FPS (TPS would work too). But I do think they should have at least one other M rated franchise with large backing in their catalog. We typically only get one-offs unless they're named Bayonetta.

Splatoon's camera may be outside the character's head, but it's pretty much an FPS in controls and feel

Of course! I'd also love for them to try another stab at TPSs since I don't like Splatoon either.

The "Hey Splatoon covers this, so we're good" sentiment is so strange, considering there are a ton of Nintendo franchises that overlap.

FPS is an oversaturated market that they don't need to make a game for that would probably serve a fraction of the audience at best. If they do, they need a really unique angle.

Please no more hero shooters. If they were to go down the route of having a first-party FPS, I'd like to see it be an arena shooter similar to Quake or something - the market is so oversatured with class-based hero shooters right now.

The Metroid Prime games that included multiplayer were actually awesome, for the the most part.

If they can not come up with any original and fresh idea, no, they should not.

It must be an '' I came up with this idea for an FPS '', not a '' We have to do an FPS, yes or yes''
