Why do you assume that trans actors have no experience or skills? If they would just cast people with no experience nor skills, the movies would suck. Think Wiseau's Room.

And in Obvious case, can't read for shit.ITT: People don't understand the problem with erasing transgender people while telling transgender stories.
And you know all trans actors are on Wiseau's level because....?
Odds that you don't get this character?
This is exactly what I think. They cast the best actors according to their casting budgets. That's how we get good movies. If they would just cast people with no experience nor skills, the movies would suck. Think Wiseau's Room.
There are - they just don't get cast because, surprise, Hollywood is transphobic as fuck and thinks this shit is okay.I don't. Like I said, I only know Daniela Vega and she's amazing. Can you tell why there are no trans actors then?

Laverne Cox? Kate DIllon? Jaime Clayton? And plenty more, not like you would give a shit to inform yourself.I don't. Like I said, I only know Daniela Vega and she's amazing. Can you tell why there are no trans actors then?
Too bad. Could have been an Oscar worthy role like Jared Leto's. And now the whole movie will probably be shelved, because who can they cast after Scarlett? Blah, stupid shit.
And coincidentally, trans actors will always remain unqualified for some odd unknown reason because meritocracy is totally real and there is absolutely no bias is casting whatsoever.
Indeed, there is. And no one is denying that. There's just the question about skills needed for this particular movie. Are there any trans actors as good as Scarlett for the role of a real-life ass-kicking mobster boss? If so, were they tested out? If now, why? If there are no such trans actors... uhm, then there shouldn't be any problems casting Scarlett. Now, do we know who were tested for the role? Was Scarlett the best one of the lot?
There was no casting call; it was a project with Scarjo gauranteed the role because she has a working relationship with the producer or director. So there was no system in place of "let the best person get the role."Chip-chip-chip-chip-cheep-cheep.
I get it 100%. It's antiracism, antiblackface joke. What's not to get in it? It's a great character and Downey is amazing.

Well, that was different considering the role Swank played, was born with a female body, but who identified as a man.
Scarlett would've played a person born with a male body, transitioning to a female body.
As if she's some acclaimed actress ddd. Sis' main role is a super hero.
You would think after the GITS backlash, she would learn not to trust this guy.
"Its different! You're stealing a trans woman's identity this time!"
As entertaining as this has been, he's not gonna get it. Save your breath.
Casting controversy aside, I'm a bit bummed that the future of the project seems uncertain. It seemed like a very interesting story.

Just make scarjo the wife. Look at the picture Platy posted. Wife looks a lot like scarjoCanceling it after all of this would also create a controversy. I imagine it will get made. Maybe they'll scale back the budget or something, but I feel they kind of have to make it now.

I'm sure Netflix will love to dump it in JanuaryCanceling it after all of this would also create a controversy. I imagine it will get made. Maybe they'll scale back the budget or something, but I feel they kind of have to make it now.
What does this even mean???
Her initial response to the backlash was one of the coldest, most detached responses ever. And even here, she says "yea, I wanna do the role, but y'all are made, so I won't". This barely qualifies as lip service, so why should we pat her on the back? She demonstrates she didn't learn anything from this situation. The only good out of this situation is that the project is most likely shelved and won't be revived until the studio thinks long and hard about proper representation, and the consequences of not doing your homework.
Get this, "we're not all born perfect" nonsense out of here.
I'm really sorry. I'd like to try and do better, hope you guys can give me a chance to.
In that context everybody can understands this to challenge perceptions.Race and gender bending happens all the time in theater with the exclusion of White actors playing Black roles due to history and that's only been a recent phenomenon.
#570
Good she dropped role, she also was producing this right? I imagine she is going to be petty and completely remove her support/resources from the project and hope it dies.
It looks like social media mobbing people out of the room. I'm not sure if it's a net positive for society.
I get the part where we want to encourage more trans actors. Are trans actors not allowed to play cis characters then, or.....?
Oh I agree, as well as your other post about in a fair and just world everybody could play anybody regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, etc... but unfortunately we don't live in that world and we have systems in place that overtly favor a specific group.I was replying to litebrite in the recent locked thread if you guys want to continue the discussion feel free.

but when we are talking about historically marginalized and the oppressed it does not hold water. Scarjo is not challenging people perspective by playing a man, she is continuing the harmful Hollywood messages that transmen are not men but women, transwomen are not women but men. Contributing to public perceptions trans people are playing dress up and tricking people, which causes trans-phobia and other gender biases that can lead discrimination and unfortunately death.
my initial post about the recent news
Films is a co-production between Silver Pictures, Maguire's Material Pictures and Johansson's These Pictures banners.
Gary Spinelli wrote the script and the film will be produced by Joel Silver, Tobey Maguire, Johansson, Matthew Plouffe, Spinelli and Jonathan Lia.

Clearly you ignored the many trans people that were pissed off at The Danish girl and Dallas Buyers Club not only for stealing trans roles to allow mediocre men to win awards, but for being misery porn for cis audiences to swoon over how tragic trans lives are. It's too bad. I was kind of interested in it. I had never heard of the person before, but it sounds like an interesting story, a trans person leading some kind of organized crime group. The movie is probably not going to get made at all now.
I understand the outrage, but I didn't agree with it. Great movies like Boys Don't Cry, The Danish Girl, and Dallas Buyers Club didn't really get this level of outrage over their casting choices and the movies were all critical and commercial successes.
People love arguing in theory without any real world context on how skewed the application is.Glad to see she stepped down from the role, even if her initial response was bad. I hope this project continues but with a proper actor in the lead role. And a better title.
And jeez, the posts in this thread. People just refuse to accept basic concepts.
I'm pretty fucking sick of how white straight cis hollywood has to keep up with this stupid shitty oscar bait about how much suffering minority classes go through. From PoC to gay to trans people, it's like they can't just tell a story with drama that comes out happy. It's all gotta be tragedy porn.Clearly you ignored the many trans people that were pissed off at The Danish girl and Dallas Buyers Club not only for stealing trans roles to allow mediocre men to win awards, but for being misery porn for cis audiences to swoon over how tragic trans lives are.
Yeah for real - that trend in media just treats people other than straight cis white people as objects to be fawned over. That's why I want the younger voters joining the AMPAS this year to shake things up - I want people to speak about their own experiences in movies, not letting approved classes speak for us. I could go further, but I'll save that rant for my oscars watch thread.I'm pretty fucking sick of how white straight cis hollywood has to keep up with this stupid shitty oscar bait about how much suffering minority classes go through. It's true [that] cultural representation has been scarce so far. And it's also true that the gesture of casting a cisgender actor to play a transgender role can be aesthetically or ethically debatable — but it should never be prohibited
If I said transgender roles should only be played by transgender actors, I would be implying that Daniela Vega shouldn't play a cisgender role. And I believe she has every right to play a man or a woman
I want to share this interview with Sebastian Leilo (director of "fantastic woman" ) about this theme

The most interesting quotes imo
I think he had a valid point.
I don't think understanding is the issue...ITT: People don't understand the problem with erasing transgender people while telling transgender stories.
Good. That is the most corporate/lawyerly/PR film approved statement possible though, lol
Pardon my ignornance, but is this not the same thing as, say, Sean Penn playing a mentally disabled person?
Would you guys be okay with a cis male playing the role, or is that too close to black face.
