It's been a while since it was shown during E3 2017 and it's creator revealed to all to have been a GamerGate supporter. Tweets of developer Tim Soret's described the concept for his game as being "a cyberpunk future where modern feminism has won."

KmpDjSb.png

Dude's twitter suggests his views are the same, and considering it was only once his old tweets caught everyone's attention, the game will reflect those views in some capacity. Regardless of what ends up in the game, the game's origins will always be marked by this.

Do you think that his game would've sold better had Soret's support and connections to GamerGate not been made common knowledge? Or will that push the game to garner more support form GGers and sympathizers?

To me, it seems to have hurt the game's chances. I still remember seeing someone screenshot this tweet from Microsoft's general manager of publishing in the middle of his questionable response to people finding his tweets:

SwRaDdS.jpg

and Microsoft didn't feature it at all since then. I feel like losing an opportunity to get your game in an E3 presser must always be a missed opportunity.

P.S.

The sheer, immediate whiplash in interest will taint everything about this game forever for me, so I imagine it had similar effect on others.

If people make a big rah rah about not buying it then there will be that group that buy it just out of spite but it'll definitely have more negative than positive impact

I'm sure it'll get a lot of buys from like minded people and the apathetic, others will probably wait to see if it delivers and buy it quietly.

I'm good not paying ol boy

I guess? I'm sure those YouTubers will jump on the game's bandwagon and support it claiming it's being bullied by the corrupt mainstream game's press. I don't know how much it will move the needle but I can see it generating some sales. Of course that isn't taking into account people who won't buy it for that reason.

All it has going for it for me personally is the visual style, but it needs interesting gameplay to really hook me in, even the disgusting things surrounding it's creator I can't say the game can hold my attention beyond a trailer.

It looks cool. I'm not here to police other people. If there's a game I want to play then I want to play it. If it's good I'll buy it simple as that.

It'll probably bomb and won't review well either. The thing about having conservative, regressive politics is it often massively hobbles media literacy.

"A future where feminism won."

These dummies only understand art as propaganda.

I can't imagine it will have a major impact one way or the other. I think that Gamergaters and extremely online people on ERA make up an extremely small portion of the population of potential customers of any game. Your normie co-worker who owns an Xbox to play CoD and Halo and ends up buying TLN because he likes the way it looks in an ad doesn't know or care about the politics of Tim Soret.

I might be wrong, I'm not as well versed in this stuff as a lot of people so there might be counter examples that prove that game sales have been directly influenced by their surrounding politics. The only other similar case I can think of is that Kingdom Come: Deliverance game, but idk how it performed.

I'm not buying that garbage. I don't wish to play it for free either since it was conceived as alt-right propaganda. I hope MS has chosen not to support the game in any way.

I think the negative impact has already been seen, as you point out with that second tweet image.

I think there will definitely be people who buy it that otherwise wouldn't have.

I think the former far outweighs the latter. Losing Microsoft's active marketing support? OH BOY! Rough.

...

Personally? There's always other games. I don't need to be some coward too afraid to take a stand to have fun with my life. I can always play something else. Or read something else. Or watch something else.

I fucking adore the way that game looks. I love cyberpunk as a genre.

But nah fuck this asshole.

I mean the statement by the dev probably has had a chilling effect on the amount of coverage it will receive possibly resulting in diminished sales potential. But it won't matter much either way.

I'm not sure. On the one hand, it's been pretty effectively blacklisted in the media, and MS seems to be no longer actively promoting it. On the other hand, the usual suspects will buy it with insane zeal, and I'm not sure how many consumers would actively boycott it, so long as they manage to actually hear about it without any media coverage or strong publisher push. But it shouldn't be hard for gators to push it to the top of Steam store charts and get it showing up in YouTube feeds, which will probably be enough to push it to success. I do think that will be a lesser success than it would've had in an alternate universe where it had non-repulsive politics, because then the media almost certainly would've been pushing it as an indie darling, whereas now it'll just be getting pushed by gators word of mouth to the politically apathetic masses.

he's not here to discuss the OP, he needs everyone to make sure they know he's not here to make a judgment call
I don't need shit, so don't presume based on one post. Check my other post before you jump to fucking conclusions. I don't have a agenda to push.

Edit: I'm out of this thread before it inevitably turns south. Have fun.

Most people who will buy or not buy the game won't be because of political reasons. I think it looks cool if the reviews are good and it seems like something I'd like I'll check it out.

Controversy sells, and the outrage around this game will draw more attention to it.
For the record, I don't agree with his views, but it won't stop me buying the game.

So was this always pushed as a post feminism world? I remember not knowing anything and just seeing a regular cyberpunk game. All of a sudden I am no longer very excited

His views have certainly had an effect on press coverage, and due to that, I don't think it will sell as well as it would have were it controversy-free. That being said, I'm doubtful that it will be too substantial of a difference. All I can really do is speculate and speak on behalf of myself, and I certainly won't be buying it.

I think we're about to see the true buying power of GamerGate at least. And I think it won't be as big as we think.

On the one hand, it's been pretty effectively blacklisted in the media, and MS seems to be no longer actively promoting it.

This is a good point. We're not going to see any previews from major sites, and Microsoft/Valve probably won't run any promotions for it. That's going to hurt its visibility immensely.

The fraction of this audience that's going to give a shit about TLN is probably practically untraceable. MS isn't even going to market it given the optics, and if you don't get a spot on the dash, discoverability goes out the window. And Steam? Don't even get me started.

Some people will probs buy it to support the shithead making it, but honestly as huge as GG is in the gaming community, to the much wider audience of the people buying the games anti-feminist propaganda isn't exactly a positive.

It this were some nothing game banking on sticking it to them feminazis and sjw's then sure, it's probably be a profitable move. But this is a game with a lot of legitimately great things already in its favour, and I reckon it's not only turning off a huge potential audience with its awful politics, but has almost certainly affected the coverage it may have gotten.

I believe he said that it takes place in a world where "feminism won" a Tweet after the Trailer came out. He's also since said that he's changed his mind about a lot of things since then (although, the tone and content of his recent Twitter posts would indicate otherwise lol).

Considering the buzz surrounding it, we actually know very little about what the game is about or how it plays.

You might be right, but I have to assume that other indie success stories like Fez, Braid, etc. managed to tap into that market and that's where they made most of their money. The 200k people that bought Fez weren't all internet culture aficionados.

A Hat In Time seems to be doing well. It was even at SGDQ, weirdly enough.

Wtf was notyourshield supposed to mean?

It was a weird astroturfed hashtag they put together, that was supposed to be about women and minorities standing up to the evil media, demanding that they stop using us oppressed folks as shields for your unethical journalism! Basically trying to claim that the media was making up unhappy women and minorities, and that real ones were thrilled about Gamergate.

I think at best assuming the game is good it will probably be like A Hat in Time certain communities will sing it's praises and others will probably ignore it. However though unlike AHiT where it was a very good game that was largely innocent and only had one thing that made it questionable this time it's the whole game so it will probably be less popular just for that alone.

I'm sure that Gamergaters will now elevate it within their community and rush to buy it, and also hope that in light of this it will never sell well in the mainstream market. I won't be buying it, nor will I encourage others to.

It's far too early to speculate about the sales of a game with no release date, and it's unlikely that anything productive will come of trying here.
