I love how fools always want to throw out Robert Downey Junior in tropic thunder like they don't know exactly why that was different and OK

I don't know. How many movies like that are made in a year? But most of them are men playing women. Now it might've been woman playing man. Progress?
I'm talking in general. Like, if actors are all about switching genders to challenge their acting skills, why is this the first time Scarlett is trying to play a man? Why not cast Scarlett as the next James Bond? Or Venom? Or Barack Obama in some movie about him? Why did they cast a woman to play Tonya Harding when they could have cast a man for the sake of challenge? Why didn't DiCaprio play Rose instead if he's such a great actor??

you can see how ridiculous this argument is when you view trans people as people instead of seeing their roles more like some kind of monster that needs a lot of CG/makeup like Golem or something

Just saw this story on Facebook... one of the comments said it needs to be a trans person playing the role. Then another replied that trans people can only get trans roles and end up pigeonholed.

I don't know what to say really. How can you win? Damned I'd you you do, damned if you don't. The problem with social media (and I include forums like this) is that today no matter what you do or don't do, a group of people will pop up and have some complaints - maybe legitimate, maybe not, but no one will ever agree what constitutes legitimate.

I have no problem in any member of any race playing other races. It's called acting. Acting is being someone who you are not.
So you're probably a big fan of things like this, huh?

Because the person who she would've played was a biological woman who just started her gender change right before she died (sorry, I'm not a native english speaker, so I don't know the right terms). So it's not exactly like Daniel Craig playing Tonya Harding. Bond and Venom are fictious characters, they can be whatever the scribes write them to be. And there have been talk about Jane Bond. I wouldn't mind, even though we already have Atomic Blonde and Red Sparrow.

Actually, no. That's not how it works - especially in regards to marginalized groups.

So how does it work then? Actors can only play exactly what they are? So everyone is an actor then? Who playes the ghosts and aliens then? Who voices the speaking animals?

Trans people can play both trans people should be top candidates for trans roles. It's pretty simple.

How is it awkward? People cast non related people to play siblings all the time. Just do that. Hire someone who looks like she could be his sister for pre transistion scenes. EZ
In terms of how it relates to roles that are almost or completely set pre-transition. (Boys Don't Cry is the best example of this I can think of) You need a different actor for flashbacks because asking/expecting a trans person who's medically/legally transitioned to deal with dysphoria to present as the other gender isn't a fair or reasonable request. And so for those roles I don't think you can or should avoid casting cis people. It's just critical that those not be the only Trans roles available, much like coming out stories shouldn't be your only stories about gay people.

Let me know which ghosts, aliens, or talking animals are struggling to be represented in Hollywood, let alone be accepted in society.

Also good job comparing trans people to fucking Casper...

Really? You think aliens and ghosts are real and pissed that Hollywood won't cast one of their people for movie roles?

You think marginalized people are the same as fictional beings?

You win by having at the bare minimum cis men playing trans men, and vice versa for trans women. It would suck that trans actors aren't getting roles but at least you're not contributing to the idea that trans people are just playing dress up.

You can also win best by ya know... casting trans actors more in general. Many trans actresses and actors in the link provided in the thread said that they wouldn't mind if they weren't rejected from cis roles just for being trans alone.

Sigh

You're very much missing the point, and comparing trans people to ghosts and aliens and animals is just... ugh

Blackface is not a valid comparison because the final product (usually a white dude with paint on his face) often looks nothing like the actual people they are portraying. It's an obvious caricature. With a transgender character actors of any gender might have the possibility to look, move and sound exactly like the real life version of the character they are supposed to be playing. They can be respectful of the source material without looking like a caricature.

The fight should not be "only trans people should play trans roles!" - it should be "allow trans actors to tryout/cast with equal opportunity for ALL roles they might be able to satisfy". That is the definition of an actor, pretending to be something you are not - and it means the roles will go to those most deserving, no matter their orientation.

Seeing marginalized people in more roles period is wonderful. Giving a trans actor priority in a trans role seems like it should be a no brainer. Not only do they bring their wealth of experience but it also shows the audience the human side of people that they might not have much interaction with.

So trans people can play non trans and trans roles but non trans people can only play non trans roles? Why? Fair enough if this is the accepted position, but I genuinely am asking.

Because cis roles generally aren't telling stories inherent to cisness but trans stories are.

Plus trans actors get very few rol;es so when we can't even tell our oewn stories that's pretty fucked... maybe in a world where trans actors were getting copious chances to perform this wouldn't be as controversial.

Ah got it. Well in that case of it being almost entirely pre transistion Id think that's fine, but I can't speak for trans people. I get what you're saying though it'd be fucked up to ask a trans man to play a woman because dysphoria.

And you're right there should be a wide range of trans roles where it's not just some oscar bait about pre transistion.

This is exactly what I think. They cast the best actors according to their casting budgets. That's how we get good movies. If they would just cast people with no experience nor skills, the movies would suck. Think Wiseau's Room.

Okay, I see the logic in that. Makes sense.

But what if, rather than the film being about trans issues, the fact that they are trans is merely incidental to the plot?

Yes, at least until there are more well known trans actors. Because Hollywood is transphobic and currently doesn't give many cis roles to trans people on top of giving trans roles to cis people. If there were more trans actors active cis people could play trans people in some capacity, the trans actors said as much in a related article someone posted.

Because trans-women are women and trans-men are men and thus there's no reason they should be denied from those roles. Like... that's kind of the whole point. They can play both, because they are both--that's literally who they are. Whereas, on the other hand, cis-men and women obviously aren't trans at all so it would be best if trans-actors would be allowed to tell their own stories instead (and failing that, at least get a cis-actor of the right gender, but preferably letting trans-men and women tell their own stories).

ITT: People don't understand the problem with erasing transgender people while telling transgender stories.
