Does it make sense to start with a healer character since your starting character is always in your party?

Anyone is viable, because anyone can fill any role to varying effectiveness with subjobs a bit later.

Pick your favorite! Really, the most important party-building aspect is making sure your path actions are covered. You'll want one of each to solve side quests and find secrets, though it isn't wholly necessary for casual play.

I just got wiped by boss in Cyrus's prologue. Totally was not ready despite my main Olberic being level 9.

Those Icicle attacks are brutal. Gonna need plan a better strategy.

I'm about 4 hrs in and this has been such a refreshing JRPG. I'm not the biggest fan of the genre and there have been exceptions where I cannot put the game down like Chrono Trigger, the DQ franchise and the Xenoblade franchise (do those count as JRPGs?). Anyway, the demos and the pace of the have been great for a game like this, so far I feel like the game is advancing without it feeling like a grind. This one is gonna be a classic in my book.

For Tressa the first skill I gave her was the give BP skill. So that just gives a party member another chance to attack within one turn right? If so that can be a megaton skill for hard fights and trying to hammer down on 1 weakness.

Therion is Op. One man army Swiss knife. He doesn't even need items. HP Thief, SP Thief.

He sure stole my heart too.

Yea no shit ....my level 10 Tressa aint sat there trying to do deeps, she handing out BP, and primrose is handing out buffs. You can even see the buffs in the picture. The only reason he isnt debuffed is that i wanted to analyse his ridiculous hp pool before putting us both out of misery.
But ofcourse gotta promote ya Kotaku tips from the guy who says Xenoblade 2 is too complicated..
[snip]

I think that attitude is uncalled for.

You asked for help, he offered help.
You can take it or leave it, but you don't need to add the vitriol.
Would you have replied similarly to a random other person on here?

Preordered from Amazon yesterday to get the Prime discount. There's no expected ship date and now the game's product page is estimating 2-5 weeks!!! Did they massively underestimate demand?

Question about image quality:

The black parts of the screen are fading out on the border, I remember this from the first demo. But i don't remember they fade out to a dark green, it looks like an image error, especially on an OLED TV, the "glitter" on the screen I remember fondly from the first demo (never tried the second) but now it looks like some error too because it flickers instead of some smooth glitter.

I bought the game digitally. Is it broken or changed the developer the graphic style in a weird way since the first demo?
I have the same problem on LCD screen. I have the tcl r615

Protip: If you want a preordered game from Amazon to arrive on time, make sure you preorder at least a week before it's actual release date. They always do this when they underestimate demand, and if you preorder a game last minute, you might not get it on release date, because they always fulfill orders based on who ordered first.

Edit: and fuck me. My order was delivered, and it arrived damaged. the case is bent at a 45 degree angle, and the edges of the box art are damaged. I'll just have to buy a copy at my best buy.

I went and canceled mine...

I ordered the Wayfarer edition the day that page went live and did 1 day shipping. There was a delivery date of next Thursday and it wasn't even shipping yet.

I decided to cancel it after seeing Best Buy have it available at a local store (got the last Wayfarer copy)

See two of my three guys were staff users there. I had Ophilia and Cyrus so both mages had high elemental defense. While H'annit main was the only one getting hit hard. Just needed two small heals to finish that fight.

That's how different the fights can go depending on who you have. I'm sure some of the other bosses like Olberic ch.1 do heavy physical dmg

So I'm playing through the game and have got 3 characters so far... but I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be doing or actually going except collecting characters so far. There's no main quest markets on the map. Or am I just supposed to explore till I find an area I'm supposed to be in?

Oh man. I'm loving Cyrus's Scrutinize.

Learning about NPCs is what love about JRPGs. Some of them are prettt funny. Like the guard who got injured and moved to a more calmer and easier job. But hasn't told anymore he's been fully healed long ago to stay in the same position lol. Literally someone I know is doing some similar that in their job.

I picked Haanit in the demo. Either get her out of the way or play her last. Totally agree with Jason's review regarding the awful use of Old Timey English in her story. It's truly bad.

Yeah i hate the dialect in that town. But. since I'm not using Olberic I thought she was the only other viable "tank" character. Is there another that would go well with Cyrus, Ophilia, and Therion?

I got Ophilia expecting her to be a main character for me, but honestly she's the first I'll drop. She's fine, but given I'm still early in the game she's completely unneeded.

Got home from work with my copy! I think I'll finish my final run with the demo to test Ophilia and then I'll start from scratch.

Trying all characters has made things even worse because I like literally everyone I tried except Alfyn, I guess. I didn't expect Cyrus to be so fun, lol, what a dork.

Games are not "literally translated" just like almost everything else isn't. Localization should capture the spirit and intent at its base level even if the meaning isn't always the same. Localization often involves changing the names of places and characters. It's an unavoidable--and often desirable--part of localization. That's why we don't have Kinopio and Teresa in Mario games over here but instead Toad and Boo.
Capturing the feeling yes. But not invent whatever like one guy who talked about his father (which Isn't mentionned in any way in Japanese).

And there's a difference between your joke names example and real "names".

I'd also argue that you can still have success with something while keeping names.
One Piece sells a lot here and all the names have been made identical to the originals (not at he beginning unfortunately, still sells).

I'm having the same 1000000th discussion. I perfectly know what needs to be adapted or not don't worry. Still we get something like Wario/Waluigi and most people still have no idea it's a joke with the warui word. Didn't make people reject them.

I mean... I'm ok with how it is. I'm just saying it's very different from the original which seems to happen more and more.

And I'm not even asking for anything. But yes, you can translate well AND more accurately. Not saying they have to. They don't care about what the minority I'm part of wants. Not sure why I need to explain : p.

I still like what I played a lot.

Super small nitpick but I wish there was a way for dialogue to progress automatically or at least allow us to press another button to continue text. I get sick of constantly pressing A and get paranoid that the constant use will make that button less "clicky" than the rest.

Bummed right now. Our regional distributor somehow thought that shipping like 6 copies for the whole country was enough.

I hope you're all having fun though!

Done for the day. 14h logged. All chapter 1 clear, currently revisiting old towns, unlocking subjobs, and finding Chapter 2 towns without starting them. No rushing for me.

I really like the HD rumble in the game, especially the rumble it does whenever you buy something, it feels like they synced it with the sound effect of the coins dropping which I thought was super cool. So far the game is way WAY better than I thought it would be given how the preview and review threads went.

Judging from the demo, look at the character's journal and you should find the name of the area you should be going. Then, just look at the map and follow the board signs.

Places
Bought it, updated switch, charging controllers. Sadly I don't think I'll have time to play until Sunday.

Picked it up at gamestop and holy hell I had to stand in line for 15 minutes because each of the 3 customers ahead of me were doing all the points and reservations and other time wasting bullshit. I would have done Amazon but it says ships in 2 to 3 weeks

I have been staring at the character select screen for 30 minutes, crippled.

This is the hardest first boss in an RPG in a while.

The dreaded character select.

So does the character you choose lock you in to their story? Like do you end up meeting characters but miss their story intros? Or do you get everyone's full story through a normal playthrough?

you get everyone's story but the character you begin with is locked in your party until you complete their story arc. does not prohibit you from seeing and going through other's though.

No, you play through everyones' introductory chapter. You are only locked in with your starting character until you complete their 4-chapter story arc. You can get everyones' full story on a single playthrough.

I am legit have trouble deciding on how to proceed:

In the demo I started with Olberic, and picked up Cyrus along the way.

Part of me wants to continue on, but I worry that Olberic will get boring.

Started with Cyrus and I'm pretty glad that I picked him to be the one that I'm going to be stuck with. He's such a nerd and I love it, and being able to decrease the encounter rate at will is wonderful.

I recruited Tressa first since I figured that having a walking money machine around would be useful, and my current plan is to just go around the circle clockwise until I get everyone before moving on to any Chapter 2's.

Finished up Olberic's 1st chapter earlier to finish my OCTO main party (Ophelia, Cyrus, Tressa and Olberic).

Will make a start on the rest of the characters in title order tomorrow. The game is fantastic though - really scratches that classic JRPG itch I have had for a while.

I really love the path actions - in one visit to a town I purchased a burly new armour with Tressa, scrutinised an amazing sword from a hidden location and knocked out some lady in front of her house to gain entry and find a really great helmet - all told these items pumped Olberic up to 1100+ hp at lvl 15.

That last sentence really made my party sound like a bunch of assholes, huh?
