Loving this so far but I am a bit confused about the flow of the game.

I started as Olberic and did the first bit of his story (chapter 1?) at which point I was just kind of wandering around and exploring and ran into Tressa. Switch to her for a bit did some stuff and then she joined the party and we have to go do some more stuff together.

So, am I now making progress on her story? if so I how do I finish Olberic's story? or is this all just how you recruit allies?

I thought you sort of met other characters and they joined your party until you finished your selected characters story and then you got to choose someone else and do their story. Is that not the case?

Should I not worry too much about it and just keep exploring?

GAH! sorry for the mess of questions. Just feeling a little confused. I guess I should just play more, but I was due for a break and thought I'd pop in here.

I'm so in love with the visuals and music so far!

Just keep recruiting more allies for now, at least until you have a party of four characters you like. Once you have a full party, you can explore more confidently and tackle some caves and such you find. In the mid-to-late teens you can start making your way to chapter 2, since you'll be leveling up on the way.

Most of the impressions here seem positive so I guess I'll buy this game too. Eventually I'll retire and have time to play through my switch backlog. In 40 years.

I am hands down enjoying my time with the game but I'm finding the pacing to be very odd. Chapter 2 stuff is all pretty higher level and so I'm exploring instead and going off the beaten path but when I find mini bosses at the end of these short caves, THEY kick my ass too.

Thought it was recommended to no do that exactly.

No not really. Embrace the freedom this game is trying to give you. If you are enjoying the first chapters keep doing them. If they are feeling repetitive move on to second chapters or side quests or optional areas or just explore the world. Also the level recommendations for areas and chapters are just that. Recommendations.

Yea something is fucked with the HP of some bosses. This optional boss fight took over 25 minutes and the boss hadnt even touched me since i learnt his weakness a few turns in.It had a shield of 4....but 30k HP, you literally just tickle him and get two whole turns to whale on him. Repeat. (If the boss had any mechanics i dont know about them, cause it was downed before taking an action each turn)

This was a level 25 dungeon, with two level 27, 1 level 25 and Tressa as a 10~. Tressa level doesnt matter since all she does is give people BP, top gal.

My Compendium Edition arrived damaged :(

The bottom of the outer sleeve was cut, and also on the front, which has gone through and made a big gash on the actual box. Looks like someone was having a bad day at the warehouse as the shipping box was in good condition.

Demand a return right away. I didn't stand for this shit when my xenoblade 2 box came in the exact same way, but in an envelope twice it's size.

Done for the night. Since I had already completed all 8 chap 1s in the demo itself, I just went to different towns and started looting every NPC. Then went to a couple of shrines and I think I'll unlock all secondary jobs before doing anything else.

There is so much to do and I just doing feel like putting the Switch down, lol. Having a great time!

Unfortunately the retailer I bought it from are out of stock and don't know when they will get it back in again. I want to play the game right away, so I've ordered another CE elsewhere and will return the crappy one later with the other CE's unopened game put in.

I guess you pretty much HAVE to collect all 8 travelers before chapter 2. I got the 4 that I wanted and planned to grind up to the point where I can start chapter 2's but grinding against high level enemies is pretty dangerous. Even in lvl 17 areas (when I'm lvl 15) enemies can do a 3rd of health to my entire party with one attack sometimes. Plus I blow through grapes an plums so much that it doesn't even seem worth it to grind at this point.

Guess I'm getting the other 4.

Very early but I find it quite slow with the setup with the thief character. A lot of dialogue before anything begins. I mention this only cause I'm worried at doing this eight times with the other characters all over again. If it is literally a series of JRPG stories in one game.

I'm in the process of writing up some tips for Kotaku right now, so you can check those out in a couple hours, but here's a basic one: Set up one or two damage dealers and have everyone else set them up in preparation for the round after you break the boss's shield.

So say Olberic is your main damage dealer. You'll want to plan ahead to make sure he has at least 3 BP on the turn after the boss's shield is broken. You'll also want to make sure that he's buffed (using his Abide or the dancer class's strength boosting ability) and the boss is debuffed (using the thief class's armor breaking ability). Once you've found a rhythm, you'll be able to rip through bosses -- just remember that it's all about maximizing the damage you do during the rounds where the boss is vulnerable.

Kinda bummed you can't talk too all the people you see.

I loved doing that in JRPGs back in the day. Hell in Golden Sun I use to talk to everyone and read their minds.

At least they populated the world. I went inside a castle and it had a ton of people. Just wish I could talk to them.

Incoming potentially bad post - but is there a recommended way as to how to play the game with all of the chapters / characters. Sorry if this has been discussed!

If you're still playing chapter 1s, once you finish it, you can go back to the town and have a lot more people to talk to. The "prologues" have a lot of things locked away for a more streamlined beginning. It's not everyone, but I don't think the amount of people you can talk to is an issue, because there is a lot. And they have all their own story blurbs, items, and you can even recruit or fight most of them.

I would just like to say how happy I am that the wayfarer edition has an outer pastic cover to prevent dings and sticky residue from Best Buy pickups on the actual box. Very nice

Up to 5 hours played. Cyrus is my main and his chapter 1 was great. Just finished Ophilia chapter 1 and the boss at the end was wonderful i loved it! Music/graphics of her area are just omg level. Loving everything about this game right now. Next up is either Haa'nit or Therion as those are the others I want to focus on first. A+++ amazing job Square, I think you have a successful new IP on your hands and hope we get a sequel eventually

Probably just your own way. You can recruit everyone and do any of the stories in the order you want.
So I'd suggest you play in a way that "excites" you.

Some do every 1st chapters the 2nd... others play 2 parties of 4 one after the other. There are probably a lot of other ways.

I'd say recruiting at least 4 to have a full party might be a good move first.

Good advice, thanks. So bosses are susceptible to regular debuffs? Are they more susceptible when broken or is it fairly easy to debuff them ahead of time? Are there indicators that show how long characters are buffed/debuffed?

Picking this up today and I'm pretty excited to play it. I know VI is the go to comparison for this but all it's doing for me is giving me the Tactics style I'm always craving.

I picked Haanit in the demo. Either get her out of the way or play her last. Totally agree with Jason's review regarding the awful use of Old Timey English in her story. It's truly bad.

Do you need to do multiple playthrough in order to experience every characters' story?
No. All 8 character stories can be done in a single save file.

Thanks OP, came into the thread wondering about this. Got instant regrets in picking my first character and didn't want to redo the hours I already spent. =/

Liking what I am playing so far! Only niggle at the moment is some is the voice acting does not match the text (playing with JP voices).

My number one question for all RPGs with random encounters:

Is there a way to repel enemies or prevent encounters?? Tried searching but no luck with a clear answer (maybe I am just bad at searching today)

Buffs and debuffs work on everyone, and never miss. (Status effects are a different story -- some bosses appear to be strong to those.) You should be using debuffs on every boss. And they'll always show how many rounds they'll last.

Are you gonna do the post game or are you done with it?

I get if you are though, considering the problems you have with it is less to do with an overarching story.

I would very much like to have the quality of life options that were present in Bravely Default. The ability to scale difficulty of random encounters for more efficient leveling, and the ability to press fast forward on battles generally.

Yea no shit ....my level 10 Tressa aint sat there trying to do deeps, she handing out BP, and primrose is handing out buffs. You can even see the buffs in the picture. The only reason he isnt debuffed is that i wanted to analyse his ridiculous hp pool before putting us both out of misery.
But ofcourse gotta promote ya Kotaku tips from the guy who says Xenoblade 2 is too complicated..

A useful tip would be something obscure about the particular combat system, not babys first rpg tips. For instance, if you can break a bosses shield with either your 2,3 or 4th character (In terms of initiative order)
  1. Choose one of them and select defend, and dont break the shield with your other characters this turn.
  2. The character who defended will be first in initiative order, now you break his shield and the boss will be down for two whole turns instead of one.

If you have Primrose, there's another way to cheese some bosses, at least if the demo is any indication.
In Sunshade following Primrose's initial quest, there's a drunken bouncer in front of the tavern whom you can, with difficulty, allure for summoning in battle. His headbutt attack will reliably do upward of 900 damage.

Love the game but the translation is..... so... so far from the original. It's embarrassing.

So happy I can freely use japanese voices and/or change text language.

Every game needs that.
