New video of this thing in action. Looking to buy one as soon as amazon gets them I suppose.

Looks like they COULD start showing up around Aug 1st at retailers for the Global version.

Had a day with the Galaxy Book so far, most of it spend updating and updating and updating some more.
I'm not sure I'm going to keep it. I'm so used to my work flow, its tougher then expected to switch to something smaller.
It does not help that my old PS version does not work and the thing gets H O T. And windows 10 in tabbed mode seems like trash.
Any tips? Are there settings I should use?

I'm going to get an adapter today to see if I work better with a keyboard. I have no clue how you can use Photoshop/anything with just a stylus.

Clip. Studio. Paint.

You probably need that Photoshp less than you think.

Believe me, that would make things easier. I bought it while Photoshop would be an ongoing cost.
I'm going to try but it would require me to also switch on my Desktop, Clip Studio can not export (or import without rasterizing)
Text layers when working with PSD.
Photoshop is also not as smooth as I thought, a couple of the more interesting brushes are in slow motion now.

Sorry for the ramble, I'm having some serious pains over the "keep or not keep" issue.

Yeah, there are PS brushed that slowed down with my 45W i7 tablet so a 15W dual core tablet won't do well with those.

Just keep in mind that GB12 is not a desktop replacement in any sense if you do heavy duty stuff even in 2D.

All the chinese Cintiq competitors suffer from more noticeable parallax and plasticky drawing surface. It all depends on how much that bothers you.

I've never used either so was wondering which would be a better buy in general.

Like if given a choice, which would you get? Would those old Cintiqs be considered capable by today's standards?

LOL everything after 256 levels of pressure, 133Hz polling rate, and 500 lines per inch digitizer resolution spec of old ass UD Cintiq 15X is diminishing returns. Even DTZ 21UX going for $300 kills those specs (1024 lvls pressure, 200Hz polling rate, 2500+ lines per inch etc.)

You just need to score a new compatible pen so you dont end up using old busted pen.

After using a Cintiq 22HD at Gobelins for the past couple of weeks I'm now looking to buy a pen display since it'll be hard to go back to a regular tablet.

I personally found the 22HD to be perfectly fine, but is the Cintiq Pro 24 really worth the extra price?

for extra benjis you get 2" more diagonal, 4x the screen res, and bonded glass with less parallax than 22HD. You need to answer if thats worth the added cost. For me it would be.

Gobelins is the real deal, congrats!
On the Samsung Galaxy book side, I'm getting more used to it. I always need time to adjust, was the same with going from Intous to 13hd and then to 22hd.
I always missed the one before for a couple of weeks and then can not imagine my life without the new purchase.

That's very true.

It's a lot of money but it'll hopefully be a decent investment.
Be mindful of the hardware you are pairing it with if you are planning to use 4K. You'll need a USB C DisplayPort to be able to use 4k resolution. Not an issue with many new laptops and apple computers, but with a desktop PC not just any USB C port will work, it has to support DisplayPort alternate, so in that scenario you'll need an adapter card to turn display port into USB C.

edit: Probably the Wacom link should work in 4K with a displayport to mini displayport cable? I think . I imagine it is included. I don't have one myself, I just remember that I was helping someone piece a computer together for this.

It was only for a short summer course, but thanks!

It was a fantastic and inspiring place to work, unsurprisingly.

I have a pretty old Mac (Mac Pro 2009), but it should hopefully work.

I just hope they'll be back in stock soon...

The best thing about the Surface Pro is that Photoshop makes the Surface Pen lag worse than my decade-old laptop. Yet Clip Studio Paint is snappy as hell?

Fucking spectacular drivers or whatever. The WinTab fix doesn't work with CC 2018, apparently. I'm tempted to break the bank for a brand new PC + Cintiq, but if I'm honest with myself, I'm not that desperate, yet.

I wish the iPad Pro had full versions of both programs. Procreate is cool and all, but it's like Diet Photoshop. I can't justify that kind of purchase if I'm not getting full PC-like functionality.

Clip Studio is already on the iPad Pro. Photoshop is coming some time next year.

Well if it is from 2009, I would make sure that it has a mini displayport or thunderbolt and you would still have to use wacom link to connect it. 24" I believe comes with everything, but there were some initial 13" that didn't have the wacom link so people without the right ports couldn't use them.

Additionally, unless you upgraded your GPU, I'm not sure 4K is possible on the original Mac Pro 2009 graphics.

It has Mini DisplayPort and I also updated my card to a GTX 660 a few years back so I should be fine.

I'm going to investigate further though.

Thanks for the info!

Which Surface Pro is this? 2017?

The reason I ask is that 2017 version has Pixel Sense accelerator for the pen that should work alot like the ASIC on the Wacom EMR boards (to off load pen calculations from the CPU). That ASIC is why my ancient Asus Atom EMR tablet beats the new MPP tablets for pen sensitivity and action.

But then again, Surface Pro 2017 is still only a dual core i5/i7 machine. It desperately needs the Kaby-R CPU update.

I just want to say, despite the monthly/yearly fee compared to the buy-once style of the PC version, the iPad version of Clip Studio is legit. Literally everything.

That should coincide nicely with (some of the) Macs switching to the A series SoC in the iPhones and iPads. Macbooks running A11 or A12 vs overheating Macbook Pros running hexacore Core i9... I wouldn't want to be Mac user next year lol.

Seriously though, it's gonna be an interesting comparison of A11 running Photoshop vs Core i7/Core i9 running Photoshop. A11 only clocks to 2.5ish GHz but packs in over 4 billion transistors VS Coffee Lake i7/i9 only packs around 2.5 billion transistors but clocks over 4GHz... WHO WILL WIN THE PHOTOSHOP BATTLE?!? :D

It is, and that's why you definitely need a BT KB for it... It's too awkward to use without some kind of method to switch tools and stuff. I can get away with not using KB on my Wacom EMR Win 10 tablet because the Feel driver allows pen barrel button mapping but even that's a bit of a hassel. Just using touch with CSP would be pain in the A...

I have the 2017 version, yes. Nice piece of hardware overall. The pen is very precise. It's just that in PS, even simple brushes chug if they have close spacing or a lot of other stuff going on.

The lag isn't as pronounced when I'm using my Wacom tablet, and it's a non-issue in Clip Studio Paint. Maybe the latest versions of Photoshop are optimized poorly? I wonder if getting the i7 core would have made a big difference.

Besides the lag, when I use the shift modifier to draw straight lines, an annoying "Shift" bubble pops up over my cursor and the brush lags like I'm trying to stream 4K and do a full system scan at the same time. This happens in both programs. Must be some weird driver thing.

Windows 10 seems to have extremely stripped down pen customization options.

Im surprised 2017 Pro has some of these issues even with Pixel Sense Accelerator.

Things like dense stamp brushes lagging is pure CPU thing. Even my quad core 45W tablet lags if the brush is too dense.

I was using clip studio with the NuVision Duo 10 Draw. Had to restart the machine, and now Clip Studio Paint it allows me to draw with my fingers and the pen. I can no longer drag the page around with my fingers, tough I can still zoom in/out and rotate. I checked preferences and Tablet mode is already selected, so I do not know where to start diagnosing the issue.

Edit: seems I can drag the page using two fingers, but if I try with one it will draw.

Second Edit: Nevermind, found the button to disable this behavior.

Sorry to harp on about this device, but for those interested you can now purchase Clip Studio's new tabmate on amazon.co.jp and it works on the "Global" (english) version of Clip Studio Paint.

Price is 3,988 JPY currently, which seems like a good deal because they were charging 5508 JPY up until a few days ago.

https://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/B07CNT946X?language=en_US

it's very easy to order from amazon.co.jp and have it shipped to the USA, thanks to their global shipping rates.

They put up an english website for it, too:

https://www.clipstudio.net/promotion/tabmate/en

Oh, and one last thing... if you don't own Clip Studio in any form, the device comes with a serial for clip studio debut to get your started.

I can't watch Colbow's videos anymore. He's so damn heavy handed in his inkwork, his opinion on how good a pen is means next to nothing to me.

BTW I checked out Surface Go. Seemed fine I guess. Can't tell anything worthwhile without installing Clip Studio Paint though...

$300 14" Windows convertible with Wacom AES support?!? Asus TP401MA-US22T

Found this thing by chance. It was displayed along with the Windows ARM 2 in 1 section at the Westfield Century City MS Store in Los Angeles. It's got Win10S, Pentium N5000 quad core (which benched pretty decently. Should be on par with the 4415Y in the Surface Go.), 4GB of RAM and 64GB storage (probably eMMC). But seeing how this thing uses 14" chassis, the storage and maybe even the RAM might be upgradeable? Maybe. The screen is 1080p res and the viewing angle seems good. Not sure if it's IPS or VA panel. I didn't have time to poke around. Only for a quick video.

The surprising thing was that it was compatible with Lenovo Active Pen 2 from the Lenovo's Windows on ARM 2 in 1 device! So that would make this the cheapest 14" Penabled device?!? Unfortunately, the Wacom's own AES pens (Bamboo Ink and Smart) does not work with it. And I'm not sure if a pen comes with it at that price. I might have to "borrow" this one from MS store later...

I'm late on responding to this but let's not regurgitate outdated memes to people asking about the Chinese alternatives. The Kamvas has a nicer pen nowadays and an etched glass surface with very little parallax. Lawrence Mann has good things to say about it. The new version coming out supposedly will have tilt as well.

Only point of concern is whether 1080p is sufficient IMO.

If they add multitouch, I might bite. CSP is so much nicer to use if you have multitouch. And I already have old Cintiq 21UX so that feature would be an upgrade worth spending money.

Clip Studio has far superior brush engine if you care about that. Its simply a much more powerful and flexible art program. Yet its only $50.

I don't like the MPP digitizer much. Even with the accelerator chip in the 2017 model, I think it kinda stinks for the way I draw. I need lots of control over pressure variations. You can't beat Wacom EMR devices for this, especially if they have Feel Wintab driver available for them. My Lenovo Helix 2nd gen has all that and simply DESTROYS all Surface devices for pen feel. You can find a decked out one on eBay for say $500.
