That isn't the case in this game, and his comments about the ideological foundation for the game shouldn't be erased.
There is literally no reason a dev would intentionally not take care of aliasing in any video game ever. Stating otherwise is equivalent of saying "30fps is more cinematic" or other ridiculous drivel.
Aliasing doesn't affect performance. Its a stylistic choice.

Sorry I just see, how to do something technically. Nothing else. For me and fellow developers it could be interesting. But I think that discussion of some people here presents should be discussed when previews, reviews, etc. Than, I would not say anything against that. Just my 2 Czech Crowns, hopefully I put it in my OG post reasonably, because, no, I don't agree with developer views. And I never said I do. But I feel like, as a programmer, that this is fascinating read and man behind, better his character should be discussed elsewhere. Like I said, just my opinion.

GG crap aside, I do like the pixel art/polygonal 3D environments/modern 3D lighting and shaders style that both TLN and Octopath Traveler are approaching, and I hope to see more of it.
I don't like the look of Octopath Traveler one bit, I think it's honestly one of the ugliest big release games of recent years. The Last Night however seems to do the style they're going for really well, hopefully it will look as nice when playing it as well, the E3 trailer doesn't exactly represent gameplay I don't think?
Anti-aliasing does effect performance. Too much pixel crawl with no texture filtering can also affect performance.

Not using mipmaps should be horrible for performance, basically quarrantees minimum cache hit ratio.
Looks better than duck's implementation from his own gif to me, wonder how the performance differs.
Really nice stuff. As beautiful as octopath looks, this kind of attention to detail really brings pixel art to the next level.. Also why are people allowed to derail a technical thread?
So they didn't use those techniques because it's hard to do on unreal engine or was it because of the switch capabilities or they just didn't thought it was a problem??
For what Octopath is going for anti aliasing wouldn't even make sense. He seems to think that retro aesthetics are the same as pixel art, which isn't the case. The former strives to look like a retro game using modern tech, as in it'll involve some imposed limitations to mirror the old 8/16/32-bit style while using other modern tech (such as the greatly expanded color palettes, sprite limits, polygons, etc). The former literally just uses sprites and pixel art, but doesn't have any similar of adherence. At least that's my assumption

That looks great actually, wonder what the limitation was for Octopath.
They just do classic nearest neighbor texturing.
Pretty sure manually doing analytic AA for texels is not widely used yet.

Thought about that as well. I wonder if this kind of pixel wobbling also happened in old jrpgs. If it did, they perhaps intended to go for that look.

Octopath was done by a new studio, and maybe the devs aren't as familiar with the Unreal engine as some developers are.

Acquire isn't exactly a new studio though. New to this style, yes, but they aren't new.

Aye, maybe wording it that way is wrong. I was seeing it as a technical problem that they just couldnt solve during development. These kind of things happen.

Nah, as much as I enjoy reading this forum, there is a very large contingent here that is absolutely of the "keep politics out of my games" variety. Just look at any controversy involving popular streamers/games and people will come out of the woodwork to defend misogynistic/racist behavior so they can keep enjoying their content.
