The long-awaited "Downton Abbey" movie is happening. The original main cast from the hit series are returning, and shooting starts in September.

Many of the stars of the series had spoken of their eagerness to return for a big-screen "Downton," and the producers said Friday the original principal cast are on board the movie. As such, the likes of Michelle Dockery, Maggie Smith, and Hugh Bonneville will feature.

The film will be a Carnival Films production, with Focus Features and Universal Pictures International distributing. Julian Fellowes, who created the period drama, has written the screenplay and will produce the feature. Brian Percival ("The Book Thief"), who directed the original series' pilot, will direct the film.

Gareth Neame, Carnival's executive chairman, will also produce. He said: "When the television series drew to a close it was our dream to bring the millions of global fans a movie and now, after getting many stars aligned, we are shortly to go into production. Julian's script charms, thrills and entertains and in Brian Percival's hands we aim to deliver everything that one would hope for as 'Downton' comes to the big screen".

The fact they gave Lady Mary a happy ending after all the terrible stuff she did still sticks in my craw.

I'll still watch it when it comes to premium channels, not going to go watch this in the theater alone.

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

I'm stunned they got Maggie Smith for this. She sounded like she was absolutely done.

Agree completely. She was vile. Worst character and I never understood how so many people were blinded to it.

Yep, movie better end with her son dying in WWII and Downton being bombed to hell during the Blitz.

Karma.

I have the impression I read somewhere it would be set in the 1940's, is it true? This would be so awesome. But I wonder how they would age the characters, especially Maggie Smith - the Dowager Countess was already in her 80's in the last season... It ended in 1926, IIRC.

Where is the sequel series where the Crawley children get hooked on Gameboy Tetris and a big family schism over hip hop

The series was wrapped up so well. I hope they don't ruin it with a movie: seems unnecessary.

Leaving for a film career didn't work out in the end, he was lobbying for Bond pretty hard in the press iirc.

He played Beast on Beauty and the Beast, the second most grossing movie of 2017 and is the extremely acclaimed star of Legion on US TV and is going to be in a couple of upcoming big TV movies starring alongside Natalie Portman, Jon Hamm, etc. Seems like things worked out for Mr. Stevens pretty well after all, although I'm not sure if the trajectory would be that different if he had just stayed on Downton Abbey.

Finally I can live vicariously through them once again pretending like I'm not a broke ass college kid.

I'm a Brit that once got drunk stateside and spent an hour in the DVD section of Walmart asking people why anyone likes Downton Abbey.

I'm still confused why this thing is internationally popular. Can Era explain?

Dan Stevens has had quite a few prominent movie roles since leaving Downton and is lead on a critically acclaimed FX show. Just because he hasn't landed the Bond role doesn't mean he failed lol.

Unless you guys are joking and I can't tell.

The movie sets up Downton Abbey: The Next Generation. It's set during World War 2 and all the children of the original cast are the new main characters.

And there's Klingons.

The last season felt so forced when it came to Mary and that new guy they introduced JUST for her.

She should have ended up with Tom, that made a lot more sense imo. He lost Rose and she lost Matthew, they were both alone and knew each other for years, but nope lets just throw in this random new guy and have her go head over heels for him out of the blue.
