I literally don't care anymore.

I'll read it and I'll be excited to do so, showing up on this board to talk about it, because he's a fucking great writer and I want to see how he positions things.

But I don't let it bother me anymore and I just assume they won't be finished.

I know a lot of people who read the books after watching season one and now they can't go back to enjoying the show the same, lol.

I read all of the books after watching season 1. I stopped at some point in season 3 because I wasn't getting anything out of it and now I desperately hide from show spoilers in case they end up in books that will never be written.

Quentyn Martell's chapter would make an excellent novella. I hope he has a similarly self-contained story in TWoW. As keen as I am for the main quests, the side stories is what gives ASoIaF its flavor.

The scene where milasandre wiyh the test tube babies machine had me rolling my eyes so hard that I started turning away from the show entirely.

You can tell that wasn't by grrm, thank God.

The man just isn't into the series anymore. He started something big and his inner muse lost interest in finishing it.

That's the strategy I took with Half-life 3 and I've been happier for it.

At least there was that leaked plot summary for HL3 a while back that gave a tiny bit of closure, and at least the GOT TV Show will give me some closure to that story (even if it is vastly different and only a tiny shell of the books, and I say that as someone who really liked the show, at least at one point or another).

Same here. I used to check his blog every day, but now I'll just be happy if it releases. If it doesn't release, I've already made my peace with it.

I remember the release thread for it on gaf and how excited every one was. I hadn't read the books at that point and was baffled by the discussions but it left enough of an impression that I checked out the first season of the show and then binged the books.
Sadly I've lost a lot of interest in the next two books because of the show moving beyond it. I'll still read them but the thought of finally getting my hands on them doesn't invoke the same level of excitement as it used to.

I don't know if you've heard of Mark Lawrence but his Broken Empire and Red Queen's War series are both complete and they're awesome fantasy novels. Plus Mark Lawrence has openly talked about what a huge influence Martin is on his writing and it shows, he's a worthy successor if you ask me.

Hmmm I'll add them to the list. I gotta re read Malazan cause I started it before they were done and fell off while waiting. It's been a while now. I also want to check out The Accursed Kings. Martin said they were the OG game of thrones. Don't know if they are good but I love that time period in history. I need to get back into reading period, too much video games.

I see the artist for Fire and Blood is Doug Wheatley, and the artworks will be in black and white like A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which I really liked. I don't like the art of A World of Ice and Fire, the styles are inconsistent since it's a bunch of artists and I don't like the ArtStation/digital art feel.

I much prefer Gary Gianni's work in AKOTSK

Disagree.

I love the art in AWOIAF, I do wish it was more consistent though.

Wow, I still remember asking my mom to pick me the book up while I was a security guard in a booth. I devoured that book in a few days.

7 years ehhh....

Wow.

I don't know what to say anymore.

7 fucking years.

The show is the best thing and worst thing to happen to ASOIAF.

I started reading the series in 2005, devouring the first three books in a span of a couple of weeks. I was so excited when A Feast for Crows came out, and thought A Dance of Dragons was coming out in 2006.

At this point, I've accepted that the upcoming final season of GoT (which I have a lot of mixed feelings about, but enjoy watching) is the only closure I'll ever get with the series. It's what it is.

I post this every time it comes up about just fucking long this man procrastinates:

The entire Star Wars prequel trilogy was conceived, written, produced, and released before GRRM will finish.

The entire Star Wars sequel trilogy, which NO ONE EXPECTED TO EVER GET prior to the Disney buy-out, will be conceived, written, produced, and released before GRRM finishes.

The entire Harry Potter series was conceived, written, and released.

The entire Harry Potter film adaptations were conceived, written, produced, and released.

The entire Lord of the Rings film trilogy was conceived, written, produced, and released.

The entire Hobbit film trilogy was conceived, written, produced, and released.

All 3 phases of the MCU, OVER TWENTY FUCKING FILMS, was conceived, writtern, produced, and released.

And its lookings more and more likely that the entire Stormlight Archive, ten books (yes, thats right, TEN) each of equal length to the longest books in ASoIaF, will be finished before GRRM. And that author started in 2010 FFS...

High school students who started reading A Game of Thrones in 1996 are now potentially parents of kids who are in college if not already graduated and also potentially grand parents.

Magali Villeneuve is the best Ice and Fire artist.

The only thing I don't like in that artwork is how old Joffery looks. He's only supposed to be twelve, right? I know it stressed several times that he's big for his age, but still.

Better yet, it has been 12 years since A Feast for Crows, which means that half the plot threads have been hanging for that long.

I barely had the energy to read this book. I am so done with the series after the TV show ends.

I started reading the series from around the year 2002. Thank God I didn't start when the first book came out.

Okay looking at Gary's A Song of Ice and Fire work makes me say Gianna is second best though after Magali.

I changed my mind. Gianna is the best. Magali is second best.

Pycelle, Varys and Littlefinger look like evil versions of Gandalf, Curly(from the three stooges) and Bismarck.

And Cersei and Daenerys are channeling Elizabeth Taylor there.

A shame he doesn't do more artwork for the series.

I don't even care anymore at this point. I'll watch the last season of the show just to do it but after that even if he releases another book I doubt I'll buy it. Even if it does ever come out I have no doubt in my mind he never releases another, so what's the point?

I feel like GoT would be a bit too grimdark and bloody for Brandon, but damn if he would, that's a match made in heaven.

People won't like what I have to say here but if Martin dies before he finishes ASOIAF, the only person I can imagine finishing it is David Benioff. He knows the franchise inside-out and is a novelist himself. I don't like the show much anymore but it sounds like the most realistic scenario to me.

I still consider myself a fan of ASOIAF but I have been slowly drifting away over the years- Westeros.org was my "main" forums before Era/GAF, and now I barely visit it. I was also super into the ASOIAF subreddit but only go back there during the airing of a season. Its kind of hard for me to believe how I've grown to care about this franchise and these characters less and less over the years, but what I will say is that Stannis is my favourite character from the franchise and I want an appropriate and satisfying end to his arc- not the rushed garbage the show presented. I don't care as much if I don't read the book ending, but damn if we could at least get Winds so that I can see the end of Stannis' arc proper (assuming he dies in Winds, that is).

He's not giving it to Benioff. Not in a million years.

I wish he would just admit he's not interested in writing the books anymore.

I'm confident that TWoW will be released one day, even if he dies, because enough of it exists. The final book is never happening though.

I read the series last year in anticipation of the TWoW being released relatively soon. Though with that I'm starting to forget where characters are at (especially from AFFC) so I might have to find a catch up somewhere to remind me. I don't know how people that finish ADWD 7 years ago are feeling.

I do love the world building so I'm glad to wait for a fully fleshed out book. Would love to know a release date though, to ease the wait.

I remember picking Game of Thrones up when it released in hardback. 22 years ago, damn I feel old. At least I've given up obsessing over when the next book would release, and also happy for GRRM's success. Also used to frequent weateros and the older ezboards iteration.

I honestly don't mind waiting. ASoIaF is my favorite fantasy series, but it's not like I still don't have a ton of books to read. I can wait a few more years as long as my good man Sandor comes back with a vengeance.

By the way, guys, it isn't super nice to tallk about GRRM as if he already had a foot on his grave or something. Dude looks pretty healthy as far as we can tell, except for his size maybe. Stephen King is one year older than him and nobody is concerned with his health even though he led a very self-destructive life back in the day, and Harlan Ellison was 15 years GRRM's senior when he died. Let's stay positive, fellows!

It's okay people. George is writing Winds and Dreams back to back in one go. He will then release Winds in 2019 and Dream a year later.

I have no evidence of this at all, but it's just my pipe dream.

January 2016 George posts on his blog on how be missed two deadlines. In May 2015 he thought he'd get Winds to the publisher by October that year. This was missed, but in October he thought he could finish it by December. If he thought he could do it in two months, then it must have been almost finished right?

So why the three year delay? Did he rewrite the whole thing? Doubtful. No. The answer is he is writing them both back to back in order to stop another massive delay between books. I know he said he hasn't started Dreams, but I call BS. He hasn't technically started because it's being written as one book to be split.

See. It all makes sense. All of it! All of it adds up!

I did read (a theory) somewhere that he was writing ADOS along side TWOW so that he could move events between the books so the ending of ADOS is more complete. I like to believe this is true.

I hope Darkstar is in the books more whenever, if ever, they come out. Guy seems like he could be the second Daemon Targaryen with his rogueish coolness.

I know he's not a major character, but I was upset he was cut from the show. People get upset over Stoneheart and Aegon and I'm over here mourning Darkstar, Victarion Greyjoy and Loras Tyrell's two brothers. One thing the show did right is refocus on Gendry. I also cheered when Randyll and Dickon finally showed up.

Even Martin's minor characters are interesting as hell.

What?! That's a book a year and then some. Is it like the books that the Expanse is based on where the "author" is really multiple people?
That was a bit of a hyperbole. The first three books (1000+ pages each) took Sanderson 7 years and the next one will release in 2020 (as of now). But that's just one of his many series. His output is really impressive: https://coppermind.net/wiki/Bibliography

I mean, he writes *more* than a book a year, just not that all of them are 1000+ page doorstop fantasy novels.

But comparing output, while Martin has released two ASoIaF books since 2005 (and a smattering of novellas), Sanderson has released the entirety of his work since then, including 3 massive Wheel of Time books, 3 massive Stormlight Archive books, 6 Mistborn books, and a bunch of other novels and novellas both within his "Cosmere" and outside it.

What's more is that he combines this with going to conventions, teaching writing and doing shit like recording a podcast.

It's like he's openly mocking everything GRRM does by shitting all over it.
