Anyone who saw his early episodes and the shit he did to try and make some of the garbage people he had come on his show comfortable would not be able to stomach this new version of him. It's amazing how so many people have no idea how sad of a turn this has been.

Late night comedy is essentially dead. Meyers can deliver a joke well, but holy shit is the Trump stuff tiring at this point. Especially with his support for the anti-sex worker bill. I just don't believe any of these people are genuine. Oliver gets domestic politics often right, but then he will devote an entire segment to some bullshit neo-liberal garbage and kill my entire desire to watch anymore. Samantha Bee and Noah. Ugh. Bee's show is clearly written by some people with emotion and energy which I love, but she often targets people that she shouldn't.

Yeah agreed, nothing really feels organic anymore from Colbert, especially noticeable in the video posted that started this thread, he is relying way too much on fishing for brownie points and it so doesn't feel genuine to me anymore. Maybe a writer issue.

He's about as alright as you can get for network TV. Chapo Trap House is my go-to for left leaning comedy.

Seth Myers has been considerably better when it comes to current events tbh

Also it's on rare occasions but I really like Kimmell when he gives a shit about something and goes in on it like the Healthcare Reform issue

Used to like Colbert but his show bores me and his humor just ain't cutting it for me anymore, not a fan of him adapting to this format tbh. Wish Jon Stewart had a weekly daily show style program on HBO as well

Only going off of youtube clips though

I mean if you don't like nonstop trump jokes it's bound too be tiresome. I think Seth Meyers does it better and so does John Oliver.

Fallon is on don't talk about politics and Colbert is the other end of extreme where that's all he does.

Of course they're not genuine.. They don't know how people really feel. They're all rich Hollywood stars. Anything Trump passes or does won't affect them at all. The tax bill benefitted them, they won't get their healthcare taken away. I truly never take a grain of salt with what they say.

I just wish Oliver would stop being funny. The stuff he researched is funnier than his jokes.

John Oliver is the only one doing The Daily Show format with the wit and intelligence of prime Stewart.

Oliver tackling societal problems and bringing them to an audience is good, but he is nowhere near Jon Stewart. Olivers jokes are basically:

"[Situation]? That's like [Analogy often including cute animals]! "[John impersonating one of the people in that analogy with a slightly higher voice]!!"

I disagree but there's not really much to discuss here. If you don't find him funny, don't watch him. And the whining about people making Trump jokes is just so dumb and bizarre. Late night shows make jokes about the headlines -- Trump occupies the headlines. Maybe late night shows aren't for you if you don't want topical comedy.

John Oliver is also making a weekly show thats not even on air every week. He has off seasons and frequent hiatuses. Colbert's is daily with a month or two accumulated of hiatuses sprinkled around in off weeks around the year. Not saying Oliver isnt better but their shows are very different beasts.

I'm a little surprised by this thread. I've been following Colbert closely, and his monologues for the last 4-5 months have been incredible. Maybe even better than his work on the Colbert Report. My only complaint is that he focuses a liiiiiiitttttle too much on Trump. There's a lot of shit happening in the GoP and American politics and not all of it revolves around Trump.

Unfortunately it does because...these Republicans line right behind Trump. You can't dismiss them without mentioning Trump since they decide to align with the man. However, I do agree that I don't understand the folks here saying Colbert turned into some sort of hack. Not every monologue he does will excel over your ("your" meaning people in the thread) favorite episode of the Colbert Report but take this segment just a few hours ago. You'd think any late night host would nail this???

Everyone in current late is unfunny. They all have writers anyways don't feel bad if they just don't deliver the jokes correctly or the intern they have didn't bring it that week. Carson Daly continues winning late night by outlasting and being employed longer than all of them, he barely shows up on his own show too.

there's two problems here

a) the format is garbage compared to the report
b) reality has become even more poison

User Banned (1 Week): Use of sexist language.
The only funny person in the news/late show sphere (because they are all the daily show now) is Alex Jones. He's a detestable, shitty person but god damn is he an amazing entertainer he goes all out every time. He has no limit. Colbert, Noah, Oliver, Myers and the rest all are completely milquetoast, paper tiger pussies. They want to maintain this fucking annoying "cool" vibe and use snark or witty come backs to try and counter whats happening in the country and its shit. Cool or funny pick one. At this point if Colbert's old uber conservative persona were to come back and be an accurate exaggeration of the right he would just have to be a Nazi. But he doesn't have the balls so nothing him or any of these liberal leaning comedians say has any sort of actual effect. It's just for people who already hate Trump to tune in and reaffirm their beliefs. "Lol he orange haha". Any hack dumb ass that said the silver lining of a Trump victory was that comedy would improve should have their frontal lobe removed to keep them from laughing ever again.

Colbert on Late Night is definitely not as strong as the Colbert Report, but given how much he has to produce and the larger audience his show is trying to speak to, it could be much worse. Seth Meyers does a slightly better job of calling out the GOP in detail and when Kimmel focuses on politics he goes for the jugular in a way that makes his appeals to reason really stand out. It's hard to believe that he's been on CBS for 3 years now, it still feels to me like he just got there and hasn't gotten used to the late night format

I think Colbert is great, both are the monologues as well as his interaction with guests. Sure, not every day's going to be a hit, but overall I'm entertained enough.

Lol, OP obviously never watched daily or Colbert show every day. They always had plently of meh jokes. They have to fill a half hour every night, sometimes you just take what you have cuz you have a deadline.

If OP thinks Colbert and his crew aren't working insanely hard every day and just phoning it in, then ya a dummy.

Lol, "a hack."

Show has been really good for the last few months. The only things that are usually duds are the intro segments which I wish they would cut and just show the extended old title credits. And they mostly suck because it's like the same 3 staff members doing it everytime. When it's Colbert himself they are usually pretty funny.

And I watch the whole episodes, not just the occasional YouTube clip. The episode with Eric Andre , Michael Moore, and Cortez before the break was great.

Colbert doesn't fit the definition of a hack. He is putting the most time in on the issues out of any of the current late night crop. Going for low hanging fruit when you have a nightly show is pretty par for the course.

I just don't really get Colbert's brand of humour. I don't think I've ever found him funny. It could be some cultural thing but then again I've laughed at other late night shows so I don't know

I thought his schtick on the Report was pretty one-note, so I can't agree with the idea that he used to be cutting edge.

I think Kimmel has actually been doing better political bits than anyone else on late night, ever since his health scare with his son. It's coming from a real place, and doesn't seem as "schticky" as a result.

Yup, though a lot of Jon Stewart's jokes sucked too. They're great at breaking down complex issues, but they aren't great comedians, or they need better joke writers.

I like Colbert's monologues for the most part. They're a pretty humorous take on the news. His interviews I don't like. They are so awkward and cringe-inducing. It's weird. His interview with the Rock (Dwayne Johnson) was pretty great this week. It's actually the best interview of the Rock that I've seen!

I prefer Seth Meyers' late night show. It's the closest thing to Jon Stewart's Daily Show on TV right now, though Samantha Bee's show is great also. I especially like Seth Meyers' interviews. They're longer than other late night shows' interviews, and they can get really interesting (and funny of course).

Conservatives are incapable of being funny because comedy requires a certain level of empathy and the ability to read a room. The conservative idea of comedy is to go into an Asian populated neighbourhood and speak in an offensive accent for 20 minutes.

So teenage internet trolls really do grow up to be conservatives.

It does seem very silly to call Colbert a hack.

Dwayne Johnson was on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen last night and it was my favourite of the late night shows hes done for promotion of Skyscrapped, it seemed like he had a lot of fun. There are a few clips on YouTube if you want to check 'em out, i'd recommend 'em for sure.
