Washington (CNN)President Donald Trump capped off his dramatic appearance at the annual NATO summit in Brussels, Belgium, on Thursday by teasing another controversial possibility, saying he would not rule out ceasing NATO military exercises in the Baltic States if Russian leader Vladimir Putin requested it during their upcoming meeting in Helsinki, Finland.

Asked if he would cancel them, Trump said, "Perhaps we'll talk about that," referring to Putin, a response that has only fueled the the growing uncertainty over the state of the alliance.
Despite Trump's barrage of acidic rhetoric during the summit, diplomats said the President never explicitly threatened to leave NATO and it remains unclear whether he has the power to do so without Senate approval.

However, Trump's comments about possibly canceling NATO military exercises at Putin's request have amplified fears among European leaders that the President could undermine the alliance by making major unilateral concessions to the Russian President -- who he again referred to as a "competitor" rather than an adversary on Thursday.

One defense official told CNN Thursday that the Pentagon is not anticipating Trump suspending exercises in Eastern Europe. In fact, joint exercises involving 17 nations -- including hundreds of US troops and several warships -- are currently underway in the Black Sea.

But the President's comments have certainly left the door open for Putin to broach the topic of military exercises in Helsinki and as commander in chief, Trump can make the decision to suspend US involvement on his own.

Trump demonstrated he is willing to exercise that power last month by abruptly suspending joint exercises with South Korea following his summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore.

Putin's gotta pulling out his hair ou.... uh, i mean he's probably very frustrated about how blatantly stupid and obvious Trump was about this. IT's why they haven't got sanctions relaxed like Putin wanted. Trump is just too stupid to do dirt on the DL.

I remember when Fox News was all over the Bowe Bergdahl and Chelsea Manning stories and wanted them burned at the stake for treason. Trump is doing Putin's bidding out in the open and it's crickets.

Russia is literally playing America like a fucking fiddle, and yet people still continue to support Trump's bullshit.

How great is it that this is already known before the summit? Seriously, he could've at least used it as a bargaining chip...

Isn't it normal for Trump to vaguely talk about what he may or may not do or what he won't be ruling out, and then later execute that thing? Like the climate agreement. At least it feels like this, so i won't be surprised if Trump announces ceasing military exercises.

I loath the GOP that continues to allow this fucking puppet to remain in power whether it is because of their fear over their base or even some support of what Trump shits out. If this doesn't end, assuming that Dems gain power, in Trump's family and legacy being torn down all the clown shoes Dems not pushing for it should be kicked out of office.

Why would he give away a solid bargaining chip before meeting the guy? We have this every single time he's about to meet someone.

Yep Fox News and Republicans are basically in a corner because their main supporters voted him in.

Not that they aren't both trash to begin with but you can't bad mouth your meal ticket.

Not America
Regardless of the Russian collusion stuff, this curve ball reeks of deliberate attempt to strong arm NATO allies to agree to Trump's budget terms.

In the long run, this will not end well.

I'm pretty sure the sanctions-dropping plan was shelved well over a year ago (surely the subject of his meeting with Lavrov and Kislyak last year) in favor of a number of back-up plans, one of which being threatening and badgering Europe and provoking Britain to remain hard on Brexit.

He has no choice but to be obvious about it really, but he's secured enough longevity and stature to know he can get away with it regardless.

We currently live in one of the worst Black Mirror/Twilight Zone episodes imaginable. Reality is fucked and we are desperately scrambling to "fix it" and encourage as much support as possible. It is an uphill battle which we cannot afford to lose.

He is building up to this somehow...

Okay, I'll admit it...I'm a dumb US American who was only taught the bare minimum about Geography in elementary school, high school, undergrad, and through my Master's (man...we don't learn shit over here).

Because of that fact, I had to check Google to see what the Baltic States actually are. "Durr."

Estonia is one of them. We just had a thread today about Estonia "girding themselves" for war.

If Putin gained control of Estonia, it would give him a route to control the Baltic Sea. If he contols the Baltic Sea, it SEEMS like it gives him a path to control the North Sea, and from there, everything is open to him.

...Is that about right??

I mean, I know that Russia's military isn't all that strong right now (they have like 1 aircraft carrier group, and would likely be crushed by the EU), but wouldn't that be a good foothold for them? Putin, unlike Trump, seems to actually know how to plan ahead. Ending joint military exercises would weaken the readiness of the forces there, yeah?

Yeah, unlike action movies or cartoons, villains in real life think long term, and make small subtle moves to set up their chess board.

I'm still stunned the US intelligence didn't see Trump coming and only investigated late after allies warned them.

Why do you libs hate peace? As the two most powerful countries in the world, it is extremely important that the US collaborate/cooperate with Russia on as many levels as possible.....

[edit] I was kidding, guys!!! And I didn't mean Russia is the second most powerful country in world now. It is THE most powerful country with the former #1 country, the US, at its command.

Lol, Russia is not the second most powerful country in the world for 3 decades now.

By that logic, you would have been fine with the US collaborating and cooperating with NAZI Germany in 1941 since they were very powerful.

can only hope that idiot trump ends up making europe's military might that much stronger thanks to his attempted sabotage.
