Seriously, it is literally a google search away to see that it was a harassment campaign with no basis in factual information, but but some gamer's and popular gaming community members still swear that it was about protecting honest game journalism... case in point, these two prominent Halo community members.

People have strong and offensive opinions about others that's just life unfortunately it is not exclusive to games and you will experience it regularly in life

The high road and imo most effective is being good to others treating them with respect and therefore providing the alternative that is better and worthwhile

Wasn't really aware it was still going. Usually when I hear about it's in the past tense or people making fun of them.

I think this video goes a good job of explaining why gaming is intrinsically linked to this awful stuff. Give it a watch if you're interested, I think it's still relevant today.

Depends what you mean. I haven't really seen much of anybody who claims to be a supporter of gamer gate be vocal about it. The only context Ive seen in recent times was people on this board attributing the label to anyone who thought Jessica Price was in the wrong for her behavior, even those who didn't think she should have been fired for it. It didn't seem to be based on any factual context of whether someone supported gamer gate or not.

But maybe I'm missing something.

It seems to me that it's become a catch all phrase to label anyone who has been perceived to be misogynist in the gaming community.

The intersection of those two things admittedly probably have a decently strong correlation.

Because women still exist and political polarization is increasing. GG will never go away until society recognizes how similar groups radicalize alienated young white men online.

They're all basically theHiroo Onodaof the internet. They still think game devs and journalists are actively working/fighting against them so they continue to fight back despite everyone else moving on. It's funny because all their mouthpieces are either banned from social media, on echo chamber alternatives like Gab or have moved on to right-wing politics and other more lucrative fields to leech off of.

Because in a world where racists, misogynists and other dipshits have been emboldened to try and make their shitty views heard, GamerGate isn't ever going to go away.

I mean, look at who's President, look at the careers it launched like Cernovich and Milo.

The alt right, or alt lite has strong ties to the internet gaming community, and they are currently surging in power and popularity. It's not going to go away at its core, even if the use of the name has died down, for a long time.

It was never addressed by the gaming community at large. the last big attempt to address the issue that gained any traction was when Anita Sarkeesin started a video series on women in games.

I know that guy! Did you listen to The Dollop this week, too?!

Also GamerGate's still around because a). the gaming industry never told them to fuck off, and b). far right horseshit's kind of a big thing right now.

Because people are after their titty games and their toxic attitudes in online games. GamerGate is the side that's for those things. That plus journalists have rallied against gamers on numerous occasions. So even though GG is full of people who harass and was created in order to harass one specific person, there are folks who don't care about that when their attitudes and games are being attacked. GG's never gonna go away.

Honestly, it isn't just gaming community. It is the society at large. Gamergate are basically same guys (or if not literally same, then the same type) as neo-nazis, white supremacist, alt-right, etc. As one can see, those guys are just getting more and more emboldened.
And they will be a larger issue sooner rather than later, me thinks.

People love a boogey (wo)man, even if it's entirely fabricated.

Also literally who are these community members?
Yeah and save for r/KotakuInAction I honestly think it goes both ways. It's either "Grrr, those Gamers and Gamergaters!" or it is "Grrr, those toxic developers and journalists" like, we really just NEED there to sides and someone to be the bad ones.

Again, outside of the trashy KotakuInAction I don't know who or where these GamerGaters are, and I use social media and boards and discord for gaming daily.

Yea your right I often forget that gamergate was the prequel to the altright wave. I'm also with you on a larger issue rearing it's head soon (hell the after math of the AreanaNet might qualify as it).

I think it's because most of the mainstream don't even know who they are and the dangers they pose.

Wasn't there supposed to be a movie about them starring ScarJo? Is that still happening?

Why are you so obsessed with gamergate that you actively check stranger's twitter posts to see what they're saying about it? That's kind of creepy.

I mean there's a lot of causes I'm passionate about, but I never go around screen-shotting complete fucking stranger's twitters to prove a point. That is so weird.

The stranger in question, well both of them are both pretty big in the Halo community. One of which was threatening to leak stolen HW2 assets.

Because this has been a problem long before GG started. It just gave a name to the rot that's been there for decades and most people are fine with the status quo.

They are prominent Halo community members, it's not far fetched that the OP follows them because of this and seeing the tweets caused him to think on this and post the thread.

I read a good article months ago about how 4Chan started a lot of the online Alt Right culture. So there's kind of a deep rooted link between the MAGA white supremacy movement, and internet nerds who like anime/gamer/nerd subcultures. I think a lot of people in the alt right believe they are "trolling," or that's what they tell themselves/what they'll say if confronted.

Because most gamers are pathetic losers who can't accept the fact women like videogames or they help develop them. Many of them continue frequenting alt-right sites too.

Gamergate is attached to the anti-feminist movement, as well as generally the alt-right movement.

The same people who talk about the "fake news media", or how liberals want to turn the US into Venezuela, or how the left hates free speech, these same people are the ones complaining about "SJW agendas" ruining their games whenever there is another female or minority protagonist revealed or representation is pushed forward in Gaming or any other medium in any way.

Gamergate is just one side of the socially regressive right wing backlash we've been seeing across the West for several years now.
Its all the same mindset: Social progressivism is bad, its forced down peoples throats, its anti-free speech and leftism is ultimately communism anyway.

It's sickening to say the least, in addition what we see with the Star Wars fandom now is so toxic that it makes me afraid we will see similar fractures in videogame communities unless if attitudes begin to shift away from far right thinking.

Basement dwelling losers thrive on the internet thanks to anonymity and a carte blanch for them to attack anyone.

I was actually banned from Gamespot for calling GG a bunch of basement dwelling no life losers, they said I was insulting a whole group of people as if I was being racist. Fuck'em.

Cause there is a subset of gamers that are the biggest snowflakes on earth that somehow got it into their head that they are the most oppressed group on earth just due to the fact that we're starting getting big games that don't exclusively cater to them.
