Actually funnily enough, some people sound disappointed with the reviews. I'm actually more interested now.

I don't want to say I expected far worse but...... I kinda did. After reading through some of the reviews, the things that bother the reviews wouldn't bother me.
Think I'd enjoy this but gonna wait for some gameplay impressions first.

The blandness/dryness of the dialogue and narrative arcs was maybe my biggest takeaway from the demo. Not surprised to see a bunch of reviewers knocking it for that. I wish they'd come up with something more compelling, considering so many other aspects of the design and production seem stellar.

Commendable. They are trying to beat the game with all the characters. The game looks to be an over 50 hour game. I look forward to their review (I hope it doesn't spoil anything).

The 'repetition' of the structure and dungeons may actually appeal to me. Now if the design is exceedingly bland visually or in narrative I could see it wearing on me, especially if there's an unfriendly grind (though a good battle system goes a long way for me). Still, I'm ready to dive into a overzealous love letter to old-school JRPGs and this appears to be that. Picking it up.

Yeah I don't see repetition as a bad thing. I remember the older Zelda games where I knew that if I beat a dungeon I'll get some of the game's story as a reward.. over and over. I didn't mind that.

While I am a bit deflated about the story complaints, everything else I've read/heard about the game sounds good. Grinding doesn't bother me, I kind of enjoy it heh. Sounds like a perfect handheld RPG to play while watching something else.

85 on MC, one of the highest rated games this year, one of the highest JRPG ever from Square Enix but "lukewarm reception"

It's easier to look past repetition when it's surrounded by an overarching story with characters you care about and grow emotionally invested in. Octopath has nothing like that.

Okay, gotcha. Definitely interested in finding out myself but again I appreciate your engagement/discussion on the matter.

Grinding is so boring in turn based games. Rarely do levels really open up new ways to play, but rather just make it so you can use the same strategy you've been using for 20 hours except this time you don't die in the process.

Shame about the lack of narrative cohesion. Story is one of the main reasons I play these games. Still picking it up and looking forward to it.

Had high hopes for this one as RPGs are my favorite genre, but they were all contingent on the the 8 paths coming together no less than halfway through the game. I don't care if the game got 100s across the board, 8 different path "Saga Frontier" style games are not for me. I don't mind them starting separate, but you need to come together to unify the story, characters and journey, and not wait until the game is nearly over to do it. This is nothing to say with the claims of repetition, while disheartening, I would have dealt with had the story been strong and overarching.
Same. A lot of the character art involves everybody being together. The expectation that this would actually happen at some point was kind of planted from the beginning. The fact that it doesn't is a huge fucking bummer, and an actual dealbreaker for me.

I try to not read reviews because of spoilers

What? Did they say the game was bad in the review then give it a high score?

A lot of the reviews are saying that the game is gorgeous, the music is great, and the gameplay is compelling... but that the game is also pretty grindy (to the point of having to stop everything and grind just to progress), that the characters barely interact, and that the stories are cliched in general.

So much for the game being the spiritual successor to FFVI. That was clearly a load of bull.

With that said, I'm still looking forward to sinking the whole weekend into this! I enjoyed the demo, and while I'm bummed to learned that the full game is just more of that, I'm still hyped. It's still a beautiful game, with a great battle system.

This was how I felt about the writing ever since the first demo. Felt like I was playing a different game from everyone else gushing over the plot and "dark" topics. Shame that that is what ended up happening :(

Me too. :( I found Primrose's stuff was unusual for an RPG, sure, but the dialogue and such wasn't my favorite. I was still really looking forward to it since it's super pretty and fun to play, but I'm a little less inclined to get it now.

A lot of reviewers are also saying that's not the case and the stories are really well done. And if the writing in what I've played so far is anything to by, I think I'll probably be agreeing with those sentiments (in that's the duties are quite good).

It's funny it seems most of the negative reviews are from outlets that don't give scores, so no one has to complain about metacritic.

This sounds awesome! Im ready for a slow burn RPG to tinker with for the next few months.

Now...Maybe they should consider truly making a FFVI-2 (or something close to that). Make it dark, mature writing, drop the anime tropes, and take us on a big overarching adventure that doesn't deal with killing an evil god using the structure of Octopath...

Because, well, we all know the thirst is real as readily apparent in this thread.

So fittingly it's scoring in the 8/10 range. I'd say this matches my impression of the demo - that it's a solid jrpg but not up there with the all-time greats. I'm sure I'll get my money's worth from it.

Sounds good to me, I always expect some grinding in rpgs, story part is slightly disappointing but that doesn't bring the positives down

Zelda botw had little character interaction and not much story and it was still great

what's the appeal in grinding?

I don't know about appeal, but I've never really seen it as a negative either. I mean I feel like I'm working towards something, shiny new gear, training up to beat a boss, new job, whatever. There is a sense of accomplishment and payoff there, and obviously it's a fairly popular mechanics considering how it has driven MMOs and Diablo type games.

Will probably get this later in the year when the price drops. Schrier's concerns mirror what I experienced in the demo and I have too much other games I need to get to first. I hope the game is successful and we continue to see more midtier JRPG tiles in this vein now that we're beyond the 3DS and budgets have to be higher

That only adds insult to injury of how much I already think Metacritic is a misleading system when it comes to picking games by their "merit" as a consumer. You can't count on scores to be proportional to quality at all.

Obviously in a genre known for dependence on character interaction this game might rub people the wrong way. Yet, I am intrigued at an unconventional narrative slant this game is taking on, telling 8 separate stories with each traveler in their own kind of plot silo. Is the lack of interaction any more preposterous than a main character of a JRPG never speaking- something we've all accepted as a norm.

The only thing that will make this game a pass for me is if it doesn't have a fishing mini-game.
