I'm tempted to sell the Wii U version and pick this one up. But I'll probably hold off.

Another few new levels would have made this an easy decision.

Dropped this like 1/3 of the way through on Wii U for reasons I don't remember. Had a fantastic time with what I played and can't wait to tear through the whole thing on Switch.

I played this to 100% on the Wii U, apart from the speed-run benchmarks for every stage, and it's definitely a priority for anyone who hasn't played it before. Swapping out a few crossover bonus stages for other crossover bonus stages isn't enough to get me to double-dip (and I say this as someone who succumbed to double-dips on Bayonetta 2, DKCTF, and Shovel Knight earlier this year and got tremendous value out of them each time... my god, 2014, what a vintage), but that's just speaking for myself. I'm happy to see it made available to those who missed the Wii U.

One thing I should warn new players about in advance—as a neighbouring thread about Nier: Automata just reminded me—is not to be shocked when you hit the end credits after what is essentially the tutorial chapter. As with main-line Mario, these days Nintendo places the end credits in such a way that they are available to children and total novices, so as to give them an easily achievable benchmark of accomplishment. In Captain Toad, unless they've moved it in the port, this comes shockingly early, and you should know that this is actually where the game begins. While not especially challenging, it's not one to write off as "too easy" just because of the credits placement (as I see far too many people do with Mario, never mind Toad).

The other thing worth noting, which may throw off some expectations, is that the axis of difficulty is actually much more akin to a platformer than a puzzle game as you get into the late stages, less about figuring out what to do than about pushing you to work on timing, coordination, and camera control. Contrary to appearances, Captain Toad may in fact be more successful as a "platformer" (just a slower-paced one where you walk around things rather than jump over them) than as a Pushmo/Pullblox-like block-puzzle exercise book. In some ways it captures the spirit of Pac-Man, where you read the space you're in all at once and plan a route from point to point while avoiding moving hazards, better than anything else I've ever seen in 3D. This is incredibly apparent when you get to the final stage, and if it had been branded as a Pac-Man 3D adventure I wouldn't have batted an eye. There is a lot about it that evokes SMB2 as well, but analogies don't really suffice, as this game has a distinctive design identity of its own.

Glad to hear both versions turned out well! Was impressed by the demo on both systems.

Though err there may have been an oversight:

Hmm I don't get it, what's the issue?

On the screen the scanning area is originating from where it used to be scanned on Wii U (I.e to the left where the NFC scanner was on the Gamepad) as opposed to what actually happened on the right Joy-Con.

At least that's what I think it is.

Edit: beaten as well.

Why isn't a game like Zach and Wicky or others ported or made for the system? I feel like this type of game would work best with this system.

Have there been rumors maybe?

definitely buying this.

Does this mean the port was a tad rushed or?

Nah, going by reviews (and from playing the demo) it seems they've done a very good job, just a somewhat amusing oversight here.

Tricky thing is there's not really an obvious place it should come from on Switch, given the NFC reader can be left on single joycon, middle on pro controller or bottom right on dual joycons

Think I'm going to hold off on this. I still have Hollow Knight, Lumines, and DKTF to beat. Wasn't a fan of the cursor in the demo and based off the reviews, that's not going away or becoming optional in the full game.

That's the Wii U game.
That's for the Wii U version, but the Switch version will be around the same score anyways.
Ah, you're right. They're adding reviews for 3DS and Switch version to this page though.

Super frustrating when someone makes a review thread without the intention of maintaining the OP for at least an hour or two haha.

Got the Japanese version as it unlocks earlier, the release date was also the 13th I suppose? It should unlocks tomorrow morning then.

Can't wait!

For those new to it, have fun! One of my favorites on Wii U. The last thing isn't so great, but the rest of it was so damn good. Hopefully this sells well and it convinces Nintendo that it needs a proper sequel. :)

I am holding off on getting this now to see how Octopath scores but I'm glad to see this is scoring higher for legit reasons.

I would have bought this day one but with Octopath coming out on the same day I had to go with that, I'll pick this up some day.

the amiibo animation was designed with the wii u gamepad in mind. the nfc reader is on the left on the gamepad

The animation of the bouncing light coming from the bottom left is a holdover from the NFC sensor's placement on the Wii U gamepad

EDIT: D'oh, beaten!

Ahhh right ok

Also I've noticed that it's not an actual Toad amiibo but then again I know that Nintendo kinda merge a lot of their Amiibos functionality between them

Picking up from Best Buy. It is the best WiiU game, and that isn't to talk down DKC: TF or BotW or anything. It is that good. If it weren't a re-release, it would absolutely be a GotY contender for me this year.

Not as good as Capitan Todd

I had a mini panic attack when I went back to GAF and realized that thread was from 2015. If anyone had asked me I swear I'd say 2017.

Can I turn off gyro camera controls? Love the idea of the game, but hated having to sit perfectly still while playing the demo.

I came close to 100%ing the original, but it's been long enough that I think I'm ready to play it again. Awesome game.

I won't be buying it on the Switch but I did own it on the Wii U.

It was probably my favorite game on the system.

If you enjoy puzzle platforming games then you should definitely buy it.

So unsure what to do. I loved the Wii U version but not sure how I feel about buying it again. I know there are new levels but they are removing levels too. Worse part, it won't go on sale cause it is Nintendo.

That being said, I am letting everyone else know they should get it. I didn't expect bad reviews.

No reason to double dip but about the "no sale coz Nintendo" you are lamenting, I'll say that the game can be grabbed for $32/€30 physical on Amazon (.com and .es) so what would be a good price for you, €10? C'mon now

Don't make a review thread unless you're going to update the OP folks.

Reviews seemed to have lined up near exactly to the Wii U original which is a good sign. I do wish there was more added content beyond the Odyssey levels, so I'm hoping there's a sequel sometime during the Switch.
