We're in an interesting position now where three prominent third party games support gyro aiming on Switch but the feature is absent in their PS4 counterpart These games are of course Fortnite, DOOM and Wolfenstein 2.

The Dualshock 4 is perfectly capable of gyro aiming and we've even seen it utilised in a few games such as Gravity Rush, but it's by no means a system standard. The likely response to this is "PS4 players don't care about gyro" but wasn't that the case with Wii U owners until Splatoon? All the system needs is a high profile game to implement the feature effectively and then more would follow in its footsteps. Fortnite could have been that very game.

I just find it odd that we have a controller perfectly capable of gyro and we're in an era where analog+gyro assistance has become a standard on another system. Wouldn't you like to see games like Uncharted 4, God of War and Horizon benefit from gyro aiming? And if not, why not?

Sure. I think it's best as an additional option rather than being required, but I can't see any downside to implementing it.

I guess with Switch, one concern for multiplayer is that there are some controllers that don't support waggle, but since every console ships with waggle capable controls it's a minor concern.

Are there any PS4 controls that don't support waggle? Obviously the default DS4 does, but what about third party controllers?

Even if it could potentially have an imbalancing effect, it would still be worth adding imo.

The thing with Splatoon though is that the dual Joycon setup is just so much more convenient than gyro + game pad. I think that helped propelled it further, plus it's the standard (pack-in) controller option for the Switch. AFAIK PlayStation doesn't offer that kind of controller (unless PS Move is comparable, idk).

Killzone 2 had it. It was awesome. There are Vita games that used it too. I know Uncharted Golden Abyss did use it.

Yes I would, all controllers need this as std, and all games that could use it need it as an option, it's great

I didn't care about gyro-aiming until I played Uncharted: Golden Abyss on PlayStation Vita. Since then, I've been converted and am confident that adding it into other games would be a pro for any shooter. It is too bad that more devs don't add it.

Ever since Golden Abyss I've wanted gyro assist in every game. If implmentation is easy enough I don't understand why you wouldn't have it, with an option to turn it off. It makes that gap between analogue stick and mouse aiming much smaller.

If they're implementing it for Switch, I see absolutely no reason why it wouldn't be enabled for PS4.

Nah.. Splatoon 2 with Pro Controller+Gyro is GOAT control scheme. Nothing inconvenient about it.

Personally I would because without gyro I have a tough time aiming in shooters.
Which is ok for single player games but in mp games I am hopeless, and since ps4 has a lot more shooters on it than switch I would like the option.

I don't think I implied pad + gyro is inconvenient, just that split con is more convenient, and that it being the default controls for Switch helped popularize it in that context.

But yeah, gyro in all controllers where capable would be great. Pad+gyro is great for sure.

Switch owners have been very vocal to third parties about requesting gyro aim. You would need a similar movement by PS4 gamers, but it will be harder since Sony doesn't have a major 1st party multiplayer shooter which pushes motion controls.

It's even more important for Fortnite because it has keyboard and mouse support on PS4 so gyro would help a little with being competitive against them.

Woah - when was it added to fortnite?!

It should be a standard really. As much as we can petition to get it added to PS4 games, really you need MS to add gyro to their controller so it can become a multiplat standard

Using the gyros for text entry is pretty cool. As the tech is already in the controller it would be good to be able to have the option to use it in games. If its been added in for Switch Fortnite its seems a no-brainer to add the option in for PS4 users as well.

I've never tried gyro aiming. Is there a single player game that has it and I can try it out?

While we're at it I'd also like the touchpad to be implemented for fast menu navigation and item sorting in more games.

Gyro aiming should be an option on every single shooter on PS4. Fell in love with it on Vita, it's the one little extra kick needed to make using a controller for shooters perfect.

I tried it some times, but didnt liked it at all.
Please dont make everything from Fortnite become a "why doesnt game xyz doesn't have this Feature" - please.

I guess Sony tried something similar with sixaxis and people didnt really liked it on ps3 so they dont think Gyro will be that popular too.
But they can try, altough its nothing for me.

Yes. Gyro aiming is so much better than analog sticks for precise aiming. Big sweeping movements with the stick, fine tuning with the gyro.

It's why I play mainly on PC, so I can map the gyro on my DS4 in all games.

I hope the next Xbox controller has a gyro.

Aye, I'm really hoping it snowballs into becoming a standard feature over time. Though obviously make it optional for reasons of accessibility and preference.

It'd be nice to have as an option, but I do recall that I was somewhat put-off whenever I tried it in Uncharted way back on the PS3, I found it a bit unwieldy. My instinct is that I prefer gyro aiming on split controllers, but I was okay with it in the first Splatoon so there's something a little more subtle going on and I'm not quite sure exactly what. At a guess I'd suggest that maybe it's the wrist angle for me?

+1 for can't stand gyro assist, but happy to back it there as an option for people that want/need it. So long as it's optional it's fine.

I prefer dual stick aiming much more so it doesn't really bother me that it's not an option. But it certainly would be nice for the people who prefer it.

I can't stand gyro controls personally, it's one of the things that make me not enjoy Zelda so much.
In general I don't like waving my controllers around too much. However I don't see a problem in making it an optional feature for those that want it.

The DS4 is a bit more easy to move around than the switch too. I've always wondered how one can effectively play splatoon using gyro in handheld mode on a switch without looking like a fool.

On Switch: Zelda, Doom, Wolfenstein.

Closest thing I can think of on PS4 is the Gravity Rush games, but that's not quite the same thing.

Only as an option and not force it on the player like Nintendo loves to do with it's first party titles.

Dont really play shooters on ps4 so not too important for me, still more options is better and anything beats analog aiming

Hell yes. Ever since playing Uncharted on Vita, I've been wanting Sony to make use of gyro in all their controllers for extra aim controls a standard feature.

I love gyro aiming when it's implemented well. I'd love an option for it.

Sony should provide an api that makes integrating gyro aiming really simple for devs. There are probably well-over 100m DS4s out in the wild, it's definitely worth doing.

Edit: thinking about it further, Sony dev kits probably have libraries/apis for it already, like we've seen with the Move controllers. If they do exist, the question is why aren't devs giving us this feature when it's available on other platsforms.

Of course. All FPS as well as 3rd Person shooters should have gyro / motion aiming these days.

Developers should arrive in the future. It's not 1998 anymore...

Back in the day, I enjoyed Goldeneye and Medal of Honor (1 + Underground) on PS1 with dual analog, but these days I downright refuse to play or buy ANY FPS that doesn't have gyro or motion aiming.

Especially 3rd Person shooters of any kind benefit so much from motion aiming.

Gyro aiming blows.

Do not get the appeal at all. I find it miserable in Splatoon .

Bit worried it'll split up the user base and skill levels, similar to k/m use on consoles, so I'm not really sure. Think for consistencies sake I'd probably just prefer most games stick to dual sticks. It's not exactly a bad thing if in competitive games everyone is on a level playing field. Or at least as many people as possible.
