I think you severely overestimate the work required to be in this industry. Its basically 90% marketing/branding and maybe 5 percent of making sure this doesnt give people allergic reactions.

and besides posing for photos, what do you think she does as far as marketing/branding? she likely doesn't manage her own social media accounts, but has a team who does so.

dressing up, posing for photos, interviews... what more do you think she does?

The article literally says she was modelling and earning 7 figures from it. She made at least $250k off of it
I'm assuming that by modeling they mean ad placement via Instagram posts?

When I think of modeling I think of what Kendall is doing. I literally don't remember her doing any modeling of that type (print, tv, runway).

Who is buying all that make-up? Did she corner the market?
Young women (and teens) in that fangirl demographic, 16-25 probably.

She's probably very hard working and talented but she got tons of help in material terms and her family name and family cosmetic business were a huge advantage not available to 99.9% of people.

The "self made" moniker is really absurd.

Echoing the same sentiment as everyone else, it would be more impressive if she didn't come from where she did. But good for her, I guess.

Read the article. The marketing is her social media basically. The branding is outsourced. Distribution is fucking Shopify lol. Again, there isnt much to this operation. Thats probably the most impressive part.

This is almost equal to an ebay or amazon seller going viral and dominating a market.

Damn had no idea she was that rich. Crazy how much of a social media following she has. I really don't understand what people see in this family but I can't deny that they've definitely leveraged their fame to their advantage.

So did any of you actually read the article? Given what's written it makes the headline even more ridiculous

When people say rich people start with a TREMENDOUS advantage, they're not kidding. Also, ironically, all the business savy and major moves were by the mother Kris Jenner. If anything, she should be the subject of this as she seems to have made all the smart moves that allowed her family to become as rich as they are. The children have largely banked on looks and their media presence while Kris was the one making all the pivotal decisions

Nailed it.

Surprised by the amount of people against the thought of her not being self made.

If it wasn't for the family/name, she would just be another make up guru on youtube. The fanbase was already there.

She's a terrible influence on women. Solve your problems with plastic surgery. Stopped using lip fillers apparently.

Her sister is worse thinking Pepsi solves racism.

Then you have her other sisters who'd take their clothes off for attention and then say it empowers them or whatever bullshit they come up with.

Holy shit I had no clue she had this business. That's really impressive no matter how big of an advantage you started with.

Yeah good for her. She obviously managed to utilize her fame in an effective way. At the same time though, I kind of understand where all the frustration in here is coming from but really, financial success of this level absolutely involves luck - a fact which can be difficult to take in.

Still amazes me though that online marketing is so highly valued in today's society. Instagram/Youtube stars are the new demigods of the new generation it seems. "Influencer" seems like an apt term.

By that dictionary.com definition though, no one is self made.

"Having succeeded in life unaided"

If I were born into poverty, started my own business with a loan from the bank and turned it into a billion dollar business, wouldn't I not be self made due to the loan I received and other "aid" I received along the way?

If that definition is applied extremely literally, I can't think of a single person ever who would fit the definition of self made.

It's not these millionaires and billionaires responsibility to fix that.

This is a seriously naive viewpoint that's based on the faulty assumption that the rich haven't actively played a part in the massive, growing economic inequality.

You think problems like homelessness happened on their own without the wealthy playing a part? You're wrong.

It says she used her modeling money to start her business and her mom helped with the logistics.

So, what you're saying is Kylie Jenner is a puppet and she does very little work?

Just give credit where credit is due.

Credit is not due.

1) She only received a modeling job with the stature she has because her sister gave Ray J a blowjob.

2) She was raised in a wealthy family. She has never had a genuine hurdle to success.

3) Very, very few people are genuinely self-made. Most people who are massively successful come from successful families who connect them with the right people and have significant opportunity that most people will never see in their lifetime (or their childrens lifetime).

She's rich and famous because she was rich and famous and hangs around with people who are rich and famous.

Her being 'self-made' is analogous to Donald Trumps 'small loan of 1 million dollars'.

Why the hate? Not many rich kids succeed as entrepreneurs at this level.

Bill Gates was also a rich kid of you read about his life. He had access to one of few computers in the US at the time.

We don't hold that against him.
I do. =P
Don't understand how many give him a pass just because he does charity work. He still has more money than any human ever needs.
Self-made in general makes little sense, you only make a lot of money if you have a lot of money.
Hate probably because she didn't do much if you read the article. She just needed to use her pretty, operated face and play nice on social media to make money almost nobody ever will reach on this planet.

It's interesting to see a thread with nearly 400 posts all taking about the Kardashians. It doesn't matter if you love or hate them, the point is you are talking about them. This is what makes them money.

So what you're saying is you want her to do everything?
Yes, personally that is what I would expect from someone "self-made". You do everything down to the detail yourself, it burns you out, costs you all of your day all week. You actually have to work, even more than the general public. You don't get a cushy modelling gig from your mother, use that money and easy loaned money through family to start your business and then just coast only pretty pictures and social media marketing speak all day.
How much work does such a social media thing even require? Like 2-3 hours a day maybe? Let your crew come to your house, do the shot, post and be done with it and let your team handle the rest.

By that dictionary.com definition though, no one is self made.

Personally it has to do with the amount and strength of help you received. Coming from a millionaire family is never self-made.
If you are poor and slowly work yourself up then you are largely self-made even if you had lucky opportunities in life.

Natural tribalism and worship, it is no surprise that society values it that much. People worshiped stone statues in the past despite them being worthless and having no power at all and representing questionable values they themself made up. Humans like to look away from harsh reality, entertain themself and loose themself in an illusion. =/

Hate them or not, Kris Jenner probably has a better mastery of the American tabloid media landscape than anyone else in the country. Her ability to keep the family relevant this entire decade is insane.

People are clueless as to how smart this family is. They know PR and monetizing social media better than literally anyone ever. They could bottle their farts and turn it into a new monetized industry. Hey have manipulated total strangers to admire and empathize with their lives, even the completely fake parts that people KNOW are fake just to entertain. They even know how to spin almost any negative event into a positive monetizing scheme. They're masters. Kris Jenner should honestly lecture at PR and marketing college programs if she doesn't already.

The way she targets outrage at everything is just crazy. Like when Kylie got with Tyga and went to a country where the age of consent was below 18 and people just went insane. They aren't selling films or music so the "all press is good press" mantra holds.

This cover alone made "self made" Google searches skyrocket while having the entire internet discuss the family yet again for an entire day lmfao. Kris' playbook is shockingly good.

Seriously. I'm scared of what would happen if a Kardashian ran for president.

That Kylie did for lips what Kim did for ass line....that ain't it.
I mean, in a way they're right. They both got rich off of things black people have naturally and were never seen as attractive until a Kardashian/Jenner got it

You attribute to the family what is largely just Kris. I even said earlier she's the mastermind that should be interviewed

Was her family rich before she was born? Yes. Did she work her ass off and become a crafty businesswoman who created a billion dollar company? Yes. I can't believe people are shitting on her, girl just became the richest member in her family and she is only 20. Give her some credit.
