After an amazing E3 and right in the heat of summer we are sharing some new features in development that will begin to roll out to Xbox Insiders today. Not all the features below will show up immediately but will begin to roll out in the coming weeks. As always, the team at Xbox is striving to improve the platform, and these features developed from fan feedback will continue to be shaped by Insider previewers. Enjoy these new features and giving your valuable feedback as you burn through your summer games backlog.

What's New for Users:

Dolby Vision Video Streaming

Xbox is committed to bringing rich entertainment options to our fans. Today we are excited to announce our latest entertainment option, Dolby Vision video streaming support across Xbox One S and Xbox One X! Dolby Vision enables select TVs to take HDR up a notch with scene-by-scene precision and accuracy versus standard HDR which uses one setting for the entire movie/show you are watching. If you have a TV that supports the latest version of Dolby Vision and a Premium Netflix subscription jump in and experience Dolby Vision for yourself in the coming weeks!

Additional Accessibility Options

The Narrator feature on Xbox One now supports five additional languages, including Spanish, Portuguese, Polish, Swedish, and Dutch. We're also adding an Australian version of English language for Narrator, so Australian users will no longer have to select US or UK English in order to use Narrator.

To activate Narrator on Xbox, follow these steps:

  • If you're using a controller, press and hold the Xbox button until it vibrates, then press the Menu button. (Press them again to turn off Narrator.)
  • Press the Xbox button to open the guide, and then select System > Settings > Ease of Access > Narrator to turn it on or off.
  • If you're using a keyboard, press the Windows logo key + Ctrl + Enter. (Press them again to turn off Narrator.)
  • To use voice commands, say "Hey Cortana, turn on Narrator" or "Xbox, turn on Narrator."
Avatars on the Dashboard

A few weeks ago, we opened the Beta Xbox Avatar Editor to Xbox Insiders. As promised in that announcement, you will now see your Avatar (if you choose to represent yourself as one), and your friend's Avatars throughout the Xbox One dashboard. You'll be greeted by Avatars across user profiles, friend blocks on Home, Gamerscore comparisons, Community posts, idle system notifications, and more. Avatars are a unique representation of your desired style, personality, creativity, and mood as you play on Xbox One. They have many different options for customization and presentation, so you can show off your unique style through your Avatar. Be sure to check out the "Avatar Experience" survey in Insider Hub and let us know what you think!

Search will now show games you own

Search is expanding to include games you have "Ready to Install" or currently own as part of your memberships, including Game Pass, EA Access, and more!

Experiments

A subset of Xbox Insiders may see some experimental features in addition to what's listed above. These are designed to gauge interest and solicit feedback from a more focused group. For example, some users will be able to share game-specific stats amongst your friends right on your home page. While others may find greater functionality within Clubs.

As always, thanks to all the Xbox Insiders for your feedback. Your insight and input is both critical and crucial to making a better Xbox experience for gamers around the world.

The new avatars look nice, but is it really a good idea for them to refocus on them?

Unless they are making another Doritos Crash Course, then the answer is yes.

All I want is for Microsoft to fix that Dolby Atmos bug where it is stuck on Atmos at all times even when the source is stereo or Dolby Digital. It completely ruins the audio, so I have to go into the settings and set it manually for everything I'm watching.

Would it kill them to add Dolby Vision support for the player as well? It must have to do with partnerships with Samsung.

I was just going to say I saw Jeff Grubb complaining about the same issue and then read the username...

Damn it. I read that thread title and got all excited. Edit that (Streaming Only)
Chances are that if your TV supports DV then you probably already have an app that does this for you. Wake me up when they have DV for disc, too.

Warning to all those poor souls still wandering in based on that title:

Oh God finally. DV support was the one major thing bothering me about using the X as my main player. Thank goodness it's around the corner

Edit: wait it's only for streaming? The fuck are you doing ms.

Thread title is misleading. It's streaming only.

But yeah, good to see some support.

Are there even any Dolby Vision games? On Xbox for sure not.

True it's not available for many games (honestly I think Gran Turismo Sport is the only console title I can even think of) but it'd be great for 4k UHD Blurays that support Dolby Vision. Kind of bizarre they wouldn't start with that.

How can there be any DV games on Xbox if the console doesn't support the feature?

There's Mass Effect Andromeda on PC that currently supports it, but for it become widely supported like HDR10 it needs to be implemented in these consoles first.

I'll add to the post saying not having Dolby vision for the blu Ray player makes this feature seem pointless as any TV supporting Dolby Vision will already have Netflix app supporting it built into the UI

My TV has HDR and Dolby Vision so I use it's apps. but my AVR has HDR and BT.2020 capability but don't think it can pass Dolby Vision thru guess i'll find out when this goes live .

I'm curious what's the hold up on supporting Dolby Vision for UHDs. That's one of the biggest things o want as well as possibly an overhaul to the Blu Ray app to try and take advantage of the system more to bring it in line with standalone players.

money to dolby. hdr is a open standard.

I still use a stand alone LG player more reliable and supports everything.

I think there are literally zero Dolby Vision capable televisions that don't feature Dolby Vision apps.

The only useful implementation for Dolby Vision over HDMI would be disc playback, since unlike Netflix apps, TVs don't have integrated disc players.

Buuut I'm not gonna be totally salty about this: it's absolutely a positive sign. I mean once Dolby Vision over HDMI is enabled in one use case, I'd imagine the rest will follow :)

Well for a second there I thought I wouldn't need to get a dolby vision bluray player... but I guess its cool that it supports streaming.

Hope one day DV moves to select games as well. RDR2 at sunset on the X and my OLED with Dolby Vision, yum.

Dolby Vision is licensed so there must be some sort of partial deal MS worked out that doesn't yet cover the hardware side of the UHD drive yet.

"Huge disappointment" comments are funny tho.

Hopefully they enable HDR10+ on the One X since it's the same as Dolby Vision basically and open source.

This is pretty huge I don't understand everyone shitting on it. Streaming supporting Dolby Vision means that the internals of the Xbox can handle Dolby Vision and that they have in someway licensed the device to play Dolby Vision (it is a license).

I am unaware of a specific streaming only license and would fully expect this to come to the player in the near future.
