What is even more crazy is that direct monetization didn't come in until 4 years after launch. To think they made on average 57 million per year is staggering.

Can you still play it in a browser?

Was great to play in the computer lab in elementary.

Why do you say this? Haven't played the game in years but I'm curious.

Extremely homophobic and racist, here's a slight excerpt from last year's Pride month celebration that was nothing but the devs putting a cosmetic rainbow scarf ingame and a short quest about an NPC trying to accept themselves (no specifics regarding sexuality):

You can find plenty more examples like this if you look up the event.

Used to load this up in the computer lab all the time at school. Never got beyond making a new character and running around like an idiot in the start area.

Yes, but you can also download a client to make it much quicker.
I actually don't think you can play in a browser any more it just makes you download the client

Old school RuneScape is one of the best examples of companies listening to their customer's,. Don't think they get enough credit for that

Gonna be interesting to see how the mobile version does. Can see it being massive

How can you base a whole community off of a dozen morons in this picture?

OSRS has a very immature community for sure, but it's mostly harmless memes. So many I've met in game have been helpful and kind..more positive than negative experiences for sure. It's not perfect but what gaming community is?

?

This was a common sentiment on the subreddit for the entire month. Like I said, there are far more examples than just this picture.

Old school RuneScape. Mobile version coming soon I think

OSRS Mobile version is already out for members for Android.

It actually brought me back to the game, I really love the game. The community isn't great sometimes, but if you find a nice group of people to talk to it is alright.

The mobile version is actually really really well done. It runs perfectly on my note 8, and the interface is perfect for phones. I've been getting mining up while watching videos at night in bed.

That's OSRS for you, this is why I exclusively play RS3- we are far more enlightened.

Again you're basing the whole RS community on a subreddit. Play the game, the community overall isn't even close to that toxic.

r/2007scape has over 200k subs, it is by far the biggest community for the game. You are delusional if you think there isn't a toxicity problem with the community.

Honestly surprised it was that low given how many years it's been out. That said, yeah they were never good at moderating that shit and it was a breeding ground for a lot of awful shit.

Everything they've done outside of Runescape bombed hard. It's all they got and all that they'll ever had. It really sucks for the developers when all they wanted to do was celebrate pride with a minuscule event and the reddit community went ballistic. I love playing the game, though it's usually just with my brother.

Quit the game because I never learned how to mine for fish

Really though, I poured hundreds of hours into this game in elementary school, I miss it. :'(

Glad to hear this. Runescape was one of my favorite games when I was a kid. Wished other MMORPGs took notes from Runescape skill system or the quests.

I don't use the subreddit, I have maxed combat and 98 slayer in old school, I have played it a whole bunch and most of the people I meet are decent.

Wasn't old school RS shutting down?

Runescape Classic is shutting down. That's the version that hasn't been updated in about 15 years and only a dozen of people play.

Besides that they have Old School Runescape which uses the game from 2007 as a base, and Runescape 3 which is the one that's been updated since the start.

200k people is an extremely small minority compared to the actual number of people that play the game.

You are generalizing an entire community based on a sub reddit.

Not to mention the fact that not all of the 200k cared if they added that event, myself included, so that makes your small minority even smaller

200k Subs over 250 Million people is about what? 0.0008%?

Reddit is itself a pretty toxic community for the most part, but it by no means stand for the community as a whole. They are a complete minority of the players who play the game.

While you are right that 250 million number is not a true representation of how many people played or play that's the amount of accounts created over all the years.

Wonder what the graph of profit over time looks like. The only monetization for ages was ads over the free version and the $5 members' subscription fee. Microtransactions slipped in at some point after I quit, to say nothing of what impact OSRS would've had.

Yeah back at it's peak a decade ago. It was around 200k concurrently playing and now it's at 75-80k with 20k on current Runescape and 60k on OldSchool. Most of the accounts are just alternates for extra characters.

I used to enjoy the game until they introduced some seriously naggy microtransactions. Also the monthly fee has absolutely rocketed over the last few years.

I'd rather play Elder Scrolls: Online nowadays.

800 mill is a nice sum for a f2p game that originated so long ago with such a small upfront fee. Also the fact that the monetization wasn't too much or too in your face was nice. Congrats on the jagex team

Depends on which game. The current one has them in every nook and cranny. They just implemented a Fortnite battle pass just the other week with their unrelenting promotions continuing.

Stopped playing consistently around 2012. Definitely a fun game back in the day. Top 3 in terms of time spent playing for sure.

I played pretty solidly for a few years but quit at the end of 2008 after I lost a ton of gold from a stupid "investment" and my motivation to play, then started playing WoW pretty hard for the next four years before quitting almost on the same day I quit Runescape.
