I wanna start this game and go for platinum trophy in first playthtough yet by selecting refrain mode it's a spoiler? But that mode is tied to a trophy too. No way iway in hell im replaying twice.

The story probably sucks as usual for jrpgs anyway so what will spoilers matter right?

So the main difference is that you have certain antagonists in your party. It'll be weird to have both of them around but you're getting the same story.

If you're going to play this once, play Refrain Mode.

Just play refrain mode. It doesn't actually seem to spoil anything unless you go for optional scenes via dating the two extra characters. Otherwise they are silent and don't impact the story.

I'm going to withhold on posting specific Bingo card updates for a bit until I'm further in, but I'm only a little over an hour in and I've already filled 4 squares. This is awesome.

Tony Taka has nice character fashion designs but I can't stand his faces.

I forgot this was so soon. Or maybe I never knew. Either way my copy is apparently delivered.

I'm gonna need to shelve this until it gets a patch. This switch version is unacceptable docked. Like drop the res to 900p. No reason this shouldn't run at locked 30.

PC Version is a smooth port. Unlocked framerate and resolution. Game is running at 144FPS @ 5120x2880. Just amazing. The console versions should be able to do 4K 60 without breaking a sweat.

Resized to 4K.

Alright so I streamed the game for a few hours tonight and I've gotta say I was pretty surprised... The game is actually quite good and that was something I wasn't expecting both in early expectations nor after the demo. I'll try to give a brief overview of what I thought worked well and what didn't...

- Combat was a lot better then we got in the demo. Having more then one character in your party makes the combat a lot better. The AI is pretty awful both for your own characters and enemies but it works well enough for the most part. Only real issue I had was Sonia would seem to taunt enemies and then run away and guard at times even when they'd stop attacking her and focus on Yuma who I was using to attack. I could thankfully order her to just go and attack but it felt like something I shouldn't have to do. Also no way I've seen so far to directly control what abilities the party is using. I wanted Kirika to use Gaia to attack an enemy but couldn't find a way to make her do that only the short commands like 'attack enemy' and what not. Also no easy way to Switch characters in or out of battle, have to directly go into the menu to swap, wouldn't be a big deal but when a certain form... acts up you lose control over that character. Maybe theres an option for it or something that unlocks but I couldn't figure it out as I was playing.

- The story and characters are pretty generic thus far but at least do get quite a bit of interaction a lot in the story but also a optional scenes as well. You can invite the other characters out to talk before you rest at the inn at night which opens up additional conversations, also I was looking through the trophies and apparently you can also go on dates as well. Diving pretty hard into that visual novel aspect XD

- Despite the obvious sexual designs the fanservice has been damn well near non-existent so far. No lewd comments, the camera doesn't seem to focus on the girls assets in any particular way but thats likely because almost all cut scenes are done like in a visual novel. I'm assuming once you start getting deeper into the relationship elements things might change but so far I'm rather impressed with how tasteful the game has been.

- The optional elements are great. You've got optional conversations with NPC's that provide world building and develop various NPC's in the story while also having a ton of side quests that offer relatively small rewards but are completely optional from what I've seen so far. Only bad part about the quests has been that they are very MMO like (kill 8 of this goblin, collect 5 of these tomatoes you find on the ground) with some of them being drops from enemies and the drop rates not exactly being very high. Thankfully rewards are so far somewhat limited so I haven't felt like its a big deal if I just flat out didn't want to do the quests.

- The Voice acting is surprisingly good, some cringy dialog to work with at times but the actors themselves do a great job. While the whole game isn't voiced a majority of the cut scenes seem to be so thats good.

Flat out I would say if you are a fan of the Tales of series I would highly recommend picking up this game, I was expecting a game like the Tales of series but worse but its on par with some of the better games in that series at least what I've played so far. It's not going to set the world on fire but if you are looking to scratch that itch and understand going into it what the game is I think you might be surprised how enjoyable it actually is.

I got my Switch version from Amazon today without any issue.

Probably because Switch games generally release on Fridays and there's just some confusion.

My Amazon package is late, unfortunately. I was looking forward to scratching that itch until Octopath gets here. So much for 'release date delivery.'

Thanks for the write-up! the gorgeous character designs were what initially drew me to the game, and I'm a sucker for visual novel aspects in my JRPG's so this all sounds pretty good to me. Are you using the JP voices or the English voices? Sonia's English voice in the demo didn't agree with me.

English, I haven't had any problem with them so far.

So ERA's telling me that this horribly bland looking run of the mill JRPG is actually serviceable?

Okay so tell me: how is the Music? Do we know who the composer is?

It's a shame Flight Plan murdered itself and the first follow up we get to Shining Force Exa is this. =/

I am so over Tony Taka's art.

Also, when I have to cash to get this I am sure I will play it and enjoy it far more than reviewers did. Because I played and realy enjoyed Shining Tears.

So far it seems as good as the Tales games, which is a hell of a lot better then I was expecting.

Were you expecting it to be garbage? If so that's a nice turnaround.

I was actually interested in it as a portable RPG for the switch but pre-release threats were like 'this game is garbage yadda yadda' so i kind of wrote it off. Glad to be proven wrong. I just want something light for my summer holidays.

My expectations were very low and the demo honestly didn't help all that much with it. The combat is a ton better then the demo really lets you experience once you've got a team to work with instead of just one character attacking an enemy that isn't very smart.

I'm playing this and while it's cute enough, it's nowhere near Tales' worst. An insult to that series tbh.

I gave the demo another go and actually really warmed up to it. Combat system is great and really like how maneuverable you are, and how different each character feels to play.

I think game actually looks really nice on the handheld mode, and very colorful

Ended up buying it. Octo may get all the attention (and game looks incredible) but this as an action RPG plays completely differently. Easily room for both, if you have the money.

Nice! I just got started and am liking the visuals, audio, and how the game feels.

Great to hear, I'm liking the voices and in the demo as well so the more the better. :)
If the partial voice list over on behind the voice actors is right then I'm going to really like the English VAs.

Yup, the character designs are gorgeous. The models and portraits look great.

I liked her voice heh, then again I love Dorothy Fahn's voice thanks to many of the characters she's played in other games and anime.

Okay so tell me: how is the Music? Do we know who the composer is?
Looks like several members of Elements Garden all worked together on it. Junpei Fujita is one of them listed on the wiki and on the Elements Garden homepage under Shining Resonance.
http://www.ariamusic.co.jp/elements-garden/fujita/

Edit: Looks like Junpei Fujita and Hitoshi Fujima are the two that have the game listed on that page.

Yeah, no idea but I expect it's going to be pretty easy in this regard. Though maybe later enemies just get super aggressive to make up for it lol.

This seems unfair to me. They're literally the first enemies in the game. It's like making a video about Dragon Quest to complain about what a pushover the slimes are.

When I'm done with Octopath I plan to make some videos with the AI. I'll see for myself with late game enemies.

So this is kind of awkward. I got the launch edition with the metal slip cover and I...can't get the game case out of it. I don't want to force it too much but I'm trying decently hard here. One side of the metal cover is too tight and the game case can't get out of it.

I'm liking this game so far. I think this game would have been leaps better if it were turn base combat with whatever unique take Sega would put on it to make it different from the rest of the turn base JRPG's out there. Just my opinion. I hope we see more mid tier JRPG's like this come over to the west on the Switch. I also just want more JRPG's with dating sim built in it lol..

That's really strange. Mine is super loose. The game case falls out of the metal slipcase if I even turn it slightly sideways. It's hilariously oversized. I'd have to stuff something else in there if I wanted to make anything resembling a snug fit.

I'm enjoying the game so far. It's gorgeous, the music is good, the Japanese voice acting is fantastic and easy enough to understand. I haven't seen much of the combat yet, and only the same part of the game that was in the demo- so I won't comment much on that yet.

If you want another opinion, here is my review of the game: https://4colorrebellion.com/post/175713213267

I liked the combat, but found everything else kind of mediocre. The writing is just painfully generic. That said, I did enjoy the battles, and there are some fun bosses. It also runs well in handheld mode on Switch.

This review is one of the worst written reviews I've ever come across lol. It's not even a review. It's so generalised and doesn't really go into anything specific whatsoever. How is the music? What is a typical battle like? Is there a good balance? What systems are there outside combat? Any crafting? You mention sidequests but don't even mention what type of sidequests. You mention tons of content but don't elaborate on anything. This tells me nothing.

You could apply your review to a lot of JRPGs and not one specific game. it's written that way. it's just skimming over stuff you kinda already know even before playing it.

Played the demo yesterday on switch, looked and played like a very traditional Jrpg which is always fine to me. Combat was neat.

Not digging some of the character designs though... espacially Yuma and Sonia. There are alternate costumes in the game right?

Technically, yes. But most of them are fanservice. You have serveral bikinis, and a maid outfit for all the girls. And there are 'idol' costumes for all the girls and boys.

I really like Sonia's base outfit, but I totally agree with you about Yuma. Unfortunately he only has one alternate outfit, and it's the Idol uniform.
