Octopath Traveler: Preview Thread

Aside from a few pieces of art showing the entire cast, you can't say that all marketing has depicted them traveling together. None of the trailers did, and it said explicitly eight different stories and eight different perspectives. It's kinda like saying fighting games marketing is misleading because they all don't fight at the same time. It's just what people expect out of jrpgs that's the issue here.
sounds like there are some small connections between the stories but overall they are 8 stand alone things
So you've already decided that any website that scores a game you haven't played lower than an "86" is a "clickbait" site that "screw[ed] up."

That's not what he is saying at all, not that I condone the use of the word "clickbait" but he is saying if a couple of reviews differ wildly from the rest (thinking 4/10's or lower) then that would bring the score down. Some small sites certainly try to be more controversial with their scores to get noticed, that's the name of the game.
Thanks for the blanket statement of "Gamers!" at the end of your post though, real classy.
Hmm the JP Eshop has the game out to DL right now... debating about buying it there or going to my local store and picking up a physical copy...
Well it is to me.
From being aggressive to people saying that they dont think this game is worth 60 dollars, to constant back and forth about if the storylines converge into one...
I pray for some of you that this wont be like White Knight Chronicles again.

Do you already know some of the scores or something? Do reviewers share that kind of stuff with each other or you just predicting?

They wouldn't catch as much flak since there's no score to lower the precious metacritic, but never underestimate people throwing a stink over any reviews that go against what they believe the game they haven't played should be received!
Marketing was very clear. It's not useless fluff. It's 8 people on a personal journey. Pretty simple. You can run into other travelers to aid you. Or you cannot.
You can turn off all voice acting but not individual battle stuff, I think.

He just means some sites giving unrealistically bad score like 4 or 5 can drastically pull the MC score down.
You pretty much need to get all 8 characters, or be severly underleveled. I mean sure you "can" i guess not get all 8, but thats just doing it for the sake of doing it.

No, not really. I mean gaming sites that rate the game with a 50 or 60 score just for the clicks. Nothing else.

yikes, I really don't feel it so far. The visual style is amazing, combat is decent but.... the *story*.... yikes yikes yikes.
edit - Now I understand what people were saying, the characters don't interact with each other in the story at all? or maybe they do later on. This kind of reminds me of the Dragon Age Inquisition banter bug lol

We had two demos. It's not a 4/10 game by any margin.
Not expecting a glowing review from the look of your posts though.
To be honest if it gets that low then usually that points to broken game design or the game is in a broken state bug wise. I'm 99% sure its not going to score those numbers unless some think the overall game is trash which I doubt.
I think the only games that deserve 1 - 5 out of 10 are ones that are broken to the point that they are almost unplayable with very major bugs imo

Guys your worrying to much. The previews have been largely positive and confident that it'll be a great game. It'll probably be low to mid 80s.

Dude, that's not what he meant. As a 'journalist,' you know smaller sites purposely post reviews that are hoping to garner clicks by purposely posting extreme scores that don't coincide with their review and do it solely to go against the grain, good or bad.
The "Gamers!" part is really insulting, too. Grow up.
I'm not sure you can call a subjective opinion "unrealistic". You can read a review and say it does a bad job of making a case for a certain end rating, but you can't just look at a score alone and say "that's not realistic".
There's elements of this game that people may or may not like. The game seems to have fairly limited party interactions, and if someone really doesn't like that or most other things in the game and can express that in a considered way, then why not score a 4/10?
One or two 4/10's isn't a bad thing, really. Just means that it wasn't a great game for that particular person. It'd be more bizarre if every single journalist rated it a 4/10 or 5/10. That would definitely be unfair.
It's better for there to be a diverse array of reviews than every review being at a relatively similar score, because people have diverse opinions. Much better than BOTW where p much every reviewer gave it a 9/10 or higher, when not every consumer enjoyed BOTW that much.

You can still call someones opinion into question. Especially if they do not articulate themselves very well in the review and they don't give justifiable reasons for giving such a low score.
Is the opposite side of the spectrum also not true? If a nintendo exclusive was truly bad, do you think a site like nintendolife.com will give it a bad score?

Seems like you should probably grow up. Who are you to tell any site that their opinion is clickbait? If a smaller site gives it 10/10 is that just clickbait too or do you just dismiss sites with scores you don't like?
I've always found the 'Gamers' used as an ad-hominem kind of obtuse. I'm no more a Gamer than I am a TV Watcher or Music Listener. It doesn't sit well that my reactions or personality are any different because of the content I'm consuming.
This post reads extra funny when you consider the venom that gets thrown at major outlets if they have an outlying score.
Yet people are dismissing those even before the reviews hitting, there is nothing to question currently.
