Yo, a week from now, i'll be flying to pretty much the opposite side of the globe - which means roughly 20 hours in flights each way, and i'm wondering which games to purchase / preload on my Switch.

For reference:
I completed Mario Odyssey, Mario + Rabbids, BotW, Steamworld Dig 1+2, Golf Story, Cave Story, Dandara, Steamworld Heist, Shantae

Like halfway through Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze.
Sunk 80 hours into mindlessly slashing my way through Hyrule Warriors.
Sunk 100+ hours into Stardew Valley.

Bayonetta didn't really click with me, sadly.
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 didn't either.
Neither do i feel like jumping back into Skyrim.
Finished Doom and Wolfenstein on the PS4.

I already saved up Hollow Knight (it's so hard not to hit play on that!), but i'd love something a little less 'engaging', no platformer or Roguelike - Something i can play while listening to the audio of an in-flight movie. Also, i'll be getting Captain Toad when it's released, but that game feels more like a bite sized thing, nothin that'd keep me busy for multiple-hour-long sessions.

Is Battle Chasers - Nightwar any good? I'm in the mood for something with a progression system and some turn based combat, but with not too much complexity. Like - less complex than Xenoblade Chronicles 2 or Octopath, but more complex than the progression systems in Mario+Rabbids, if that makes any sense
- And with not too much talking to people, walking through towns...
(I feel like Octopath would be a bit too JRPG-y?, and the art-style doesn't really appeal to me)

Appreciative about any and all recommendations.

So I am not plussed 100% by Battlehasers. Its neither great nor bad. Honestly I'd wait for a better price on it. Battle system is okay, story okay, artstyle is great, but overall it didn't hook me.

There are a couple other traditional RPGs on Switch. Things like Dragon Sinker, or if you want tactical the Mercenaries Saga. I am going to recommend you check out Earthlock. It was a KS game that recently got a major overhaul of nearly everything and that took it from an okay rpg to a good one.

More importantly it will check off a lot of your wants.

Turn based, with some nuance but not really complex
You can ignore pretty much all the people walking around, and even then they highlight/point out who you need to talk to.
Interesting world. Solid ensemble cast.
Not strict Fantasy but a mix with Sci Fi stuff.

Maybe watch a video of the updated version of the game. It is just called Earthlock now. I recommend it, but it does seem to have been ignored here.

I found time to play Bomber Crew last night...boy that was fun but can be brutal! Good (or bad?) you can sort of continue grinding out missions before you finish a "campaign mission" in a manner of speaking. You could grind and be super-powerful but I think it was designed so when you get wrecked on a mission, you can do a mission to at least afford them some clothes.

I am really digging it.

Seeing how we're about to splurge 120 bucks on reserving two adjacent seats (as well as Window + Aisle) for one of the 6 flights (albeit the longest, 10 hours), price isn't all that much of a concern.

Thanks for the recommendation, though - i'll look into Dragon Sinker.
Not all that attracted to its retro aesthetics, i must admit. But i'll check a few gameplay videos.

Fair but what I really meant is that Battlechasers isn't worth $30 but Earthlock is worth its asking price.

How about West of Loathing? It's an easy-going RPG. Probably around 10-15 hours, depending on how much you want to do.

And the Mario+Rabbits DLC with Donkey Kong campaign seems to be around 5 hours or something. I haven't yet finished that myself, but DK plays very different compared to the base game game characters.

2¢ impressions..

Shining Resonance is fine.. Not exceptional.. but ok. My recommendation for ARPGs is... if you haven't played Ys VIII..... friggin play Ys VIII. Not sure if it's a modern classic or not... but it's REALLY great. If you've already beaten Ys VIII, Shining Resonance is a fun scratch to that itch.

Right in the middle of that one, couldn't wait ... loving it so far. Though that's not really a "plane game" for me, because for whatever reason, i always need to take a break after like 2 battles. Same thing happened with the main game.

Are there any horror games on the Switch I might've missed? I already own Layers of Fear, Detention and Perception. I know of both Outlast games, but I'm not really interested in those two since I can get a physical PS4 version pretty cheap these days. Don't Knock Twice I've heard is genuinely bad, but I can't think of much else.

To offer a different point of view, I just finished Battle Chasers and I enjoyed every minute of it. It offers exactly what you are looking for, a pretty simplistic system with progression and gear upgrades, minimal npc chatter/cutscenes, and I found the combat to be fun. Each party member is fun to use, and you can come up with your own team to synergize off of. The art is beautiful, the soundtrack is outstanding, and the animations are top-notch. (You feel those impacts in combat because of the spectacular animation.)

That being said, the story is pretty straight-forward and basic, loading times aren't great, and there are some frame rate issues from time to time. I own the game on PC as well, but none of these issues detracted from my experience with the Switch version. The price, like with everything, is subjective. I got it for $32 with my GCU discount, and I would do it all over again without hesitation. (Despite having purchased the PC version for like $6.)

What about games with a horror setting that are not really scary? In Goetia, you play a ghost, and without really spoiling anything, Goetia is a practice that includes the conjuration of demons. If you like point and click games with some very good puzzles, I would highly recommend this.

There's The Bunker FMV which is supposed to be psychological horror (haven't played),

There's also a game called White Night, a black and white horror puzzle game which I haven't played. Might be good - http://www.metacritic.com/game/switch/white-night

There's The Long Reach and Hollow, both of which didn't review so well I think but that doesn't necessarily mean anything.

And there's a new game (on the Switch, came out 2017 on PC) called Angels of Death - https://www.hardcoregamer.com/2017/01/06/review-angels-of-death/242080/

Also, how could I forget, RE Revelations 1 and 2 , both great fun. And Slayaway Camp, also recommended (humoristic slasher horror puzzle game)

Is Little Nightmares considered horror? (haven't played it) . What about Inside? (will buy but haven't yet, so don't know)

Coming out 2018, some sooner, some later: Hello Neighbor, Yomawari Collection, Death Mark, Okuriinu, some others.

Glad I gave into Yooka Laylee, got to the first world, and it's hitting all the right notes for me(note I grew up with banjo tooie and cleared it multiple times before I even got to touch kazooie)
However as a result I am skipping sonic mania plus for now, I'm almost done with crash n sane trilogy(well base level, I'm in the final world of 3, but I'm not pushing for 100% yet), I have shining resonance refrain, and have octopath traveler on the way and the temptation of mugsters
Plus I kinda suck at classic sonic gameplay

If you've put in 80 hours into a mindless game like Hyrule Warriors and seem somewhat interested in RPGs, I would highly recommend YsVIII. The game play is like Hyrule Warriors, only fun. (OOOH SICK BURN.) Just kidding, I played like 30 hours of HW too, I enjoy the game, but Ys is like a refinement of that. There are actually challenging enemies and bosses, and a cool dodge and guard mechanic (something like Bayonetta's witch time, execute it perfectly and activate a "witch time" where you do critical attacks). It has multiple difficulty levels, so you can set it low if you want a more Hyrule Warriors type of experience of just mindless hacking and slashing, or turn it up to Hard if you want to be challenged in your ability to guard and dodge. I think there's something for everyone there.

The story is very interesting (stand alone, no knowledge of the series needed) and the game is all about exploration. Fantastic music. Runs great on the Switch. It's a really really good game on the Switch.

... I would NOT recommend Battle Chasers Nightwar. This won't help you for now, but later on in August you must play Cosmic Star Heroine. Excellent turn based JRPG with a great combat system and everything else. But seriously, watch a few videos on YsVIII, sounds like it could be up your alley.

Whats the target framerate on the console platforms?
I'm curious on this as well, as if it can hold a steady 60FPS on Switch Im totally buying it. Looks really fun.

Meanwhile, I gave 20XX a shot in between Mega Man sessions and yeah, this is fucking brilliant. It controls really well for me (bar the right stick issues mentioned above, but I can adapt) and the enemies/bosses so far seem a nice blend of fair and tough. I can see me pouring dozens of hours into this. I can see the Switch fast turning into a Mega Man platform for me...

Ungh, I just started practicing MM2 speedruns yesterdays and I haven't finished all of Legacy Collection yet, and I told myself I should just play that instead of buying a new game...

But 20xx looks so cool

Its definitely worth getting if your a Mega Man fan no doubt! Its much closer to X than the original Mega Man (with dashing, wall jumping etc.) so its going to be nice to have this and the X Collections this month!

Personally I think Battle chasers is great and its almost entirely combat focused, the town is menu based so its very streamlined and takes virtually no time at all. Combat system is easy to learn but there is depth there especially in terms of finding a good combination of party members. It's also a very different tone than most of the japanese RPG's, has some beautiful colorful artwork (looks nice 1080p docked) and I love the music. Many people felt like the price was too high though - personally I was fine since I loved this game on PC and bought it digital on switch so I can play it any time, but I do think its a little pricey considering how many great RPG's are on switch

Battle Chasers Nightwar, I played 10 hours and couldn't get into it. Combat felt too repetitive. Despite having clearly deep systems at play, every combat situation turned into using the exact same strategy each time... despite the enemy actions.

Contrast this game with Cosmic Star Heroine next month and its combat blows this away. You're right about the art style/graphics, they do look extremely nice, but everything else felt barren. The story moved at a snail's pace and didn't provide a meaty hook to keep playing. Overall, I was disappointed in my $40 spent on the game. CSH is going to be $15 on release and I already know (played about 10 hours on PC) that its a much better game.

I can totally understand that, and you dont have to use complex tactics until later in the game. Even then, game is entirely about the combat, its not a story dense game.

Cosmic Star Heroine disappointed me because the writing seemed childish and immature, though I have to admit scifi is my favorite genre of all so its hard for a small indie to compete with say the mass effect series. But yeah totally understand why you prefer it, especially given the price disparity.

Wow I guess I dodged a bullet with Battle Chasers, sounds disappointing, this is why I'm extremely picky with who I trust when looking fot RPG impressions. Turn based combat is tricky because you need a good, engaging combat system but unless you also nail encounter design and difficulty balance in general, it's useless.

so many games I've never even heard of just appear out of nowhere on this little system. I am loving it.

The Coma Recut should still be on sale, I've heard good things about it.

Remothered is coming sometime soon as well.

WANT

What are the odds of this being translated for the United States? 5%? 1%?

There will be a english patch added to the Japanese version for 9th of August.
This is also the day when the Asia version of this game comes out with English support already added to the game from beggining.

If you're talking about the game coming out on other countries it might happen since it was found some rating for a Taiko game on Australia but it might take months until it comes out in the West.

I'm not seeing any search function anywhere on that page.

It's also not the point. If I select the sales filter I should be seeing everything without having to specifically search for things I may not be aware are on sale.

Made it a ways into Bomber Crew. It's great! Very much like a smaller-ship version of FTL in ways, i.e. moving around your crew to respond to things. I love the idea of scanning the skies and spotting enemies/targets, etc. There are other little touches that make it awesome as well, such as your plane taking visible damage as it's getting shot up.

I need more time with it to come close to a final verdict, but so far it is in no way shape or from a waste of time or money having it on the Switch. I look forward to playing it and the eventual dlc.

I'm not seeing any search function anywhere on that page.

It's also not the point. If I select the sales filter I should be seeing everything without having to specifically search for things I may not be aware are on sale.

I know, but sometimes the website doesn't list everything perfectly. Also, you can look third party sites with sales list for double check.
