From what I played, this seems to be a worse version of the Bravely games unfortunately

But hopefully still good enough

Yay I got Alfyn. Who I already picked as my starting character in the timed demo. Mainly cause I was bummed out when I started playing and wanted something that sounded more uplifting that some of the other tales. I shall play them all though, but optimistic kind Alfyn is the kind of character I wanted to believe in right now.

Yeah, sometimes the adventure itself can be satisfying in it's own right, instead of the destination.

I look at the cohesive whole of the game with it's gameplay in terms of combat system, class mechanics and individual path actions, the music, the interesting mix between 2D sprite work and 3D backgrounds, and each characters own story beats.

I mean at this point I've played other games in the past with individual character stories and they stood well on their own irrespective of a converging narrative. Octopath Traveler can stand on its own in the same manner just the same.
Yup, the game has a lot of other things going on for it and it's fairly gameplay and sysrems-focused, so expecting a traditional story or for it to resemble old classics is kinda missing the point, let it be its own thing and judge it for what it's actually trying to do...

I'm all in because I'm loving the style, combat and customization, but that's not to say the stories are /bad/, I actually quite like what I've seen of the writing in some of them.
There is a neat survey to help you choose your starting character, I got Ophilia and/or Tressa but I already know I'm starting with H'aanit.

Got merchant and warrior, not bad. Tressa is fun and I'm fond of Olberic, but so far I'm siding towards Primrose as I'm very curious about where her story will go.

Also yay official sprites! Will probably pick one for avatar later.

I'm all done and can confirm once again that unless there's some crazy super hidden thing that I don't know how to trigger, Shadowforks is full of shit. If someone reading this has beaten the whole game and knows if there's something obscure at the end to find or activate, please do DM me.

My review will be up Thursday morning at 9am ET on Kotaku.com.

Much appreciated for the heads up.

There are things to do afterwards though right? That have nothing to do with stories like super bosses and such?

I'm going with Cyrus myself.

Honestly, I'm fine with a Canterbury Tales story format myself. Now, it would be cool if it did the Live-A-Live thing (which I'm also getting major vibes from in this game) and opened up a final path after the individual stories, but I'll probably be alright if it doesn't.

Edit: Just saw the above post. I'm pretty much fine with this, there's still going to be a lot of content in the game.

Thanks for humoring everybody here. Looking forward to your review

I certainly hope this whole experience with the community hasn't soured your view on the game (i.e. fruitlessly chasing this elusive hidden ending)

Pleased to see scaling (at least for bosses) is the real deal. I've beaten Primrose's chapter 1 as my first twice with both demos and her chapter boss was a joke even at level 3, but I recruited her as my third member just now having Tressa in level 10 and Olbric in level 8 and this same boss didn't pull any punches, he hit super hard and the fight lasted long enough for him to call reinforcements, which I didn't even know he could do.

Pretty fun, can't wait for the final game.

Kidding. Let's put all this behind us. This game is going to be magical.

P.S. Got Cleric and Scholar. Was gonna go with Cyrus, anyway.

Jason, how long was your total play time to 100% all 8 characters and secondary job skills?
I'm hoping it's around 100 hours!

I cant wait to sink in some serious time and lose myself in this game, and only around 36 hours left!
Look forward to your review!

Whelp, it was nice to dream. Oh well.

That survey should have asked 8 questions. Got Olberic and Cyrus, which was my plan from the start.

It's only for the Prologue bosses, but, yeah, my 3rd time through the demo, 4th time going up against Olberic's boss, and got totally wrecked a few times with 3 party members.

Don't know about a max level one—when is that ever the case?—but we've heard from other people that there are high level dungeons that exceed the story levels, IIRC.

Also this:

Hope it goes to 99!
The track he refers to is the final battle theme!

It's production sounds so grand, I will be dumbfounded if it was somehow left out of the game!

I'm surprised there isn't one final hurrah with all the characters, even just a final boss. But I'm still interested to see where they take the individual stories and how good the game is as a whole. Looking forward to Thursday.

The way the characters have inner monologues and stuff, at least from my Olberic run, I wonder if they comment on just stuff when you discover an item. I want to find a old bent sword just to hear Olberic's take on it.

"Inconceivable! This sword is bending!?"

And there goes autocorrect again trying to change Olberic's name to Alberic.

I don't understand what everyone's obsession with this needing to have a grand overarching story is. There is absolutely nothing wrong with having 8 personal stories on each of their own journeys. To me at least it's a very unique and interesting way to handle a jrpg.

Thinking my main party will be:

Alfyn (second job as a warrior)
Primrose (second job as a merchant)
Therion (Second job as a hunter)
Cyrus (second job as a priest)

looks good doesnt it?

They crave it, but they have no idea why. Just like everything in real life, basically. Does Era imitate life, or does life imitate Era? That is the real question.

Got the exact same results.

Is the apothecary even fun to play as? In Final Fantasy V, I kind of hated that class (chemist?) that was all about combining items and using them. Maybe I should go try him out in the demo. This game seems to be good at blending and expanding upon the boring base classes we all know, so maybe he is fun.

He seems like he would synergize really well with the merchant or thief.

Have you tried starting a new game, and completing the characters stories in the exact O C T O P A T H order, ensuring that when you beat each story, the save file registers the completion with the hour count ending in an 8, with the final completion time at 88 hours exactly? If you haven't done that I'm not sure anyone in this thread will take you seriously or believe that you have "completed" the game. Sorry.
