No, there is not a world of difference. Expecting a game that starts off as a series of vignettes but soon turns into a grand overlapping story is far, far different than expecting a game that mostly consists of eight different stories and then has some bonus uniting stuff at the end. Shadowforks' tweet is false and should probably be deleted before it misinforms more people.

the tweet said that the game is a series of individual vignettes that stand on their own (aka beginning, middle, and end all self contained to that character) followed by a payoff for the ensemble

eight different stories with some bonus uniting stuff at the end would be that

If copies are starting to show up in retail stores, I think my usual spots in my city might get it a day or so early.

I can't wait, I've been craving an RPG that interests me (I hate the Xeno series' combat, don't really enjoy strategy RPGs, so Mario + Rabbids were out of the question) on the platform for the longest.

Not exactly.

"Towards the beginning, it's a series of vignettes that tell individual stories that hold up on their own, followed by huge payoffs that deal with the ensemble cast."

Saying "towards the beginning" would imply the vignette structure ends far before the end of the game itself, not that it's vignettes for >90% of the game with some bonus stuff after.

And "huge payoffs" would, of course, be technically possible in that kind of final scenario even if the majority of thengame is the vignettes, but it definitely implies more than just "bonus stuff", y'know?

Even in the best case for him, where a satisfying final thing does exist with big payoffs, what he wrote was a very bad wording of the structure he was trying to convey, to the point that it was inaccurate.

yeah the "towards the beginning" bit is confusing but all the rest directly references the ensemble payoff happening after the completion of all 8 stories

I'm not even saying if that thing will or won't happen, none of us know, but schreier keeps trying to say that tweet is 100% false when he hasn't completed all 8 stories. how can you be 100% sure of if and what follows the completion of all 8 stories when you haven't done that yet

I don't know, his posts in this thread are just giving off a weird vibe is all

I don't fully believe the tweet but honestly I interpreted it the same way as phanphare, so from that perspective, Jason seeing the credits roll after 4 character stories cleared doesn't necessarily prove the tweet wrong.

I interpreted "towards the beginning" as "at first" basically.

8 individual stories vs one main one is a huge letdown for you?
It's certainly a different approach form what we are all used to, that's for sure.
But as long as the writing holds up and it remains interesting this could be something very special and unique.
Its a letdown because it makes no sense for any of the cast to even accompany you on x heroes quest.

They are each on their own life altering journey and they suddenly uproot to join some other persons cause? I simply don't buy that.

yeah pretty much

I'm also combining that tweet with this one

plus schreier saying he saw credits after finishing 4 stories so that basically tells me that the tweet is referencing reviewers who might see the credits roll after 4 stories and think that they're good to write their review not knowing that there's an extra something something after beating all 8 that could affect their review enough to where people will recognize who has and hasn't completed the game

and I say again I'm not claiming that this will 100% happen. could be something could be nothing. schreier could end up being right despite not knowing definitively at this moment in time. we just haven't reached the point where anything has been 100% confirmed. that's it

I just watched ProJared's preview. 100+ hours with 8 stories and all these jobs and setups....god I need this game like NOW. I swear if this game had the SaGa "spark" system, it would be my dream game but I'll take this too!

I think they join you for the sake of the gameplay. It's a party rpg to offer more varied combat. It's a small concession, at least as far as I can tell without playing. No need to contrive it.

Finally got to play the demo (I was waiting for it to be closer to launch date).

I've picked Primrose as the starter, and beat the first boss.
Now, if I want to play to play Tressa first chapter, do I have to travel to her city? Or is there some menu where you can jump to any other character?

I'm playing through the demo as Tressa and I just paired up with Olberic, finished his little prologue... so at this point do I have the choice to pursue either of their goals?

So basically, I think he's implying the opposite of what most people want to believe here.

He references a lot, and tries to downplay anyone reading it any way. He seemed to generally really like the game: "I feel it's definitely a game for people who have maybe fallen away from Japanese RPGs in the last 10-15 years or so - there's so much to love in terms of calling back to (and building on) the classics - but it struggles with that too."

Of games he think is relevant to the discussion, he mentions Xenoblade, FFXV, and Persona 5.

I think it's a bit wishful thinking taking all of that from this dude's tweet there. He specifically mentions people stopping at 10-20 hours, and based on impressions so far it doesn't sound like anyone reviewing would have seen the end of a story by then.

Yesss. Thank you for posting the picture itself! I read through a couple pages not knowing how it looked because the tweets never show up properly for me

I'm really excited about this game but the overall slipperiness of the previews and wording from folks who have played the game concern me that it may be incredibly repetitive. I hope we didn't see the best of what they have to offer in the Prologue/Demo.

Alex's tweet does not mean what you think it means.
Do you know what he's referencing and can't go into detail due to embargo? I do trust you more on this, but I just thought you might have been missing something.

You have to go where she is and talk to her in person, yeah.

I don't think so because those continue in their chapter 2s and you only have access to chapter 1 of each character in the demo. You can find other characters and see their stories tho.

After all this shit, 6-7 score range for the game seems very plausible atm.

Hope not ofc.

Previews were too positive / glowing for the perception of the game to turn that hard against the game over the course of the last 5-6 days. People panicking in this thread over their perception of vague statements on game structure from embargoed sources and French players feels out of line with how much people seem to really be into the game.

Final Fantasy Gaiden and Bravely Default didn't really "stick the landing" by most people's perception, but I'm not entirely sure that the mistakes of those games could remotely translate to OT.

The 10-20 hours timeframe actively works against it meaning what you want it to mean.

under 70 Metacritic score incoming

I'm just going to wait till Thursday to see reviews to see what it really ends up at...but as someone that thoroughly enjoyed all 3 hours and didn't mind any of the negatives seen in the thread. I still am hyped.
