The rotation means I will probably never bother to build a Brawl deck. It's just not worth it combined with the lack of store events and me not having a play group I would probably play 5 games tops between roations.

Will be nice in Arena though.

Having not seen/thought about Brawl at all, wouldn't the rotation be part of the appeal? It's a way to use your singleton standard cards you get at drafts- why wouldn't people treat it like standard?
Are people pimping their Brawl decks like they do EDH decks (ie, Russian Foils?)

If there's no rotation it's just a crummy version of Commander. Not point of the format existing if that's the case. If you don't want rotation, just play Commander.

This is part of the reason why it's important to at least skim the actual article. Here's the actual quote:

For example, we're looking at things like making sure upcoming sets have the right spread of colored legendary creatures and planeswalkers (especially at the fall rotation) to make most color combinations playable, ways to improve Brawl two-color mana bases, and getting more of those big, splashy effects (like sweepers) into the format. As purely an example, an eight-mana multiplayer-focused board sweeper is unlikely to impact Standard but helps clean up the Brawl board.

MTG Arena, at least in my matchmaking queue, seems to have fallen in love with the mono black control deck. I suppose it's at least a change from counter everything and/or mono red.

I'm trying get back in / really learn Magic and I need some confirmation. If I understood correctly, players can now attack Planeswalker cards as well as the opponent ? With any creature or spell ? Or is there a subtetly I didn't follow ?
And on the other hand I can't willingly redirect an enemy's attack on a Planeswaker card ?
That's the two main questions, I'm sure there are many more.

There is no redirection anymore for planeswalkers. Now, you choose to attack either the player or any of his/her planeswalkers. With regards to spells, specifically burn spells, spells have been errata'd now to specify if they can or can't hit planeswalkers.

Because if it becomes big enough, there will always be format-specific chase cards. Rotation is a big feel-bad moment that competitive players are willing to shrug off but assuming brawl players are more casual, they probably won't take it too well.

Brawl is for drafters and pack crackers who want a format to play their one-of mythics in. Those people will keep drafting and keep cracking packs and won't be as affected by rotation as everyone keeps moaning about.

To be clear, you could always choose to attack a player or planeswalker. What changed is that spells now explicitly say if they damage planesawalkers or not.

Are you pointing out how Volley Veteran and Siege-Gang Commander appear to be fighting each other, or the way they curve into each other?

I still get 90% control control control. Im always strongly tempted to concede as soon as I see that island and plains come down. Even if I win in the end, I know the match will be a long drawn out snooze fest. Absolute worst is the version with no creatures just counters and board wipes using approach of the second sun as win condition. Anyone playing that should be thrown into a bathtub filled with smegma.

The Arena interface somehow makes playing this matches so much more malicious to me than playing a control player in paper or even MTGO. The complete inability to communicate just makes me picture the most loathsome person ever laughing as they counter everything or Fumigate my snakes and ballista. If I was playing this person in paper I can at least judge if they're actually a jerk or not from how they act.

I don't think I've seen an Approach in weeks in the Competitive Constructed queue. UW is popular, but not much more so than UB control, and UB midrange shows up somewhat often. Red is still the color I see most often, with some mono-red with hazoret and glorybringers and some with black and more artifacts. Every so often you run into a WB knights and enchantments thing. Green, usually paired with black for constrictor, is pretty rare. I haven't seen a mono-green stompy in a while, for some reason.

Oh I forgot to post- I won my prerelease 4-0 with a G/B deck, splashing 2 copies of the new Oblivion Ring. I opened a bunch of bad on-color rares (Scapeshift, the GGGGGGGGGG 10/10), but had the Might of Oaks Aura that ended a ton of games attached to the 5/3 Hexproof guy.
Format seems fun- can't wait to draft it a bunch on Arena

I've been doing BW Midrange on Arena (which is 99% of my Magic play at the moment and I'm considering selling out of Jund in paper because it's just too much money tied up in something I don't use enough). It's basically a low end of the 2 drop B/W Knights + History of Benalia, and then Shalai, Angel of Sanctions and a couple Lyra up top. It's better than I originally thought it was because everything in the deck is just so annoying. Early First Striking Knights + cheap black removal means you often do have a decent game on Mono Red even in BO1 and Shalai (while maybe a bad choice here) just feels so fun to resolve because she's just soooooo annoying - your opponent can't Settle the Wreckage with her out and otherwise they just have to spend a card to remove Shalai before they can do anything else (which is sometimes her job).

Shalai is easily my favorite Standard card.

Once in a while I get someone who will spam the "good game" quick chat option after every spell they use and during the entirety of my turn either to mock or to try to get me to concede. That's the only time I purposefully slow play.

I'm still on GB Snake mostly which is such a fun deck. I tried the GB Midrange deck that got top 8 at SCG the other week, but wasn't super impressed.

Shalai is easily my favorite Standard card.

Yeah, Shalai is much fun. Playing her on 4 and swinging when your opponent has Settle mana just sitting there uselessly is such a delight. I was playing her before they added Kaladesh mostly, but now it's less a delight when they then untap and Fumigate, but thems the breaks.

Oh i forgot to post my sick prerelease deck lol....

Get this i had
Double Sarkhan
Demanding dragon
Lathliss
Common dragon
Rise from the grave
3 drop black rare that let's you reanimated for x
Double vampire neonate.
2 of the lichs caress
Fiery finish

In 4 50 minute rounds... I had won before we hit the 30 minute mark lol

It was kind of unfun because of how quick the games were over.

In my prize packs I opened Nichol Bolas and ajani, and my promo was the foil sarkhan.

All in all a good day

I've yet to encounter that, though I haven't been on in awhile. That sounds obnoxious though. What I hate is when people GG a turn or two before a win. Just seems arrogant.

I don't run into a lot of Fumigate for whatever reason.

Those are pretty interesting Commanders. With Nissa, is this the first time you, the player, are granted an ability?

Also they would never print a card that says something "can't leave the battlefield." Pretty sure Tabak would have an aneurism just looking at it.

I'd be shocked if Jembu was a real card design. It reads like a Robo-Rosewater legendary.

Tying Brawl to Standard is what makes it appealing to me though. I have no interest in playing Standard due to the monetary investment for so many cards that I will never use again once they rotate out of Standard. Brawl allows me to crack a box or two for home drafts and then throw together a whole bunch of decks, which -- while not perfectly optimized -- are still fun to play. Brawl feels a lot closer to the kitchen table Magic I used to play before I got old enough to buy my own cards, and I love it for that. I'm not sure how excited I will still be come rotation in the Fall, but I imagine I'll just buy a few boxes of Return to Return to Ravnica and make do with that.

So, I haven't played in forever and I've got some free time this summer.

Would getting into league play be worthwhile if I don't have the money to just outright buy a deck and want to be on level playing field (obv my lack of knowledge wouldn't be perfectly level, but in terms of access to cards)? There's a few comic/gaming stores around me that seem to have a league day listed, so I suppose I should check them and see how active they actually are with those? Is there basically a day it starts and then it's up to players to find time to play?

You can technically play League anytime the store is open. You might want to ask your local LGS's how active their league scene is. From my experience, league is most popular with newer players so a store with a more serious playerbase may have trouble running an active league. A lotta times when I want to play league I have to play in between sessions during FNM.

I'll ask around then. I have a friend of a friend who plays at one of the stores and I can ask him.

Also I'm kicking myself for thinking about getting into Magic this summer just now, because sealed is way easier to get into as a newbie than draft and I just missed it, haha. I've only drafted a small number of times years ago.
