I like how some people are more worried about them going to the world cup than recovering and being with their families.... like wtf lol
When the boys were first found one of the very first questions they asked was "How was Germany doing in the World Cup?". You can both be disappointed they won't be able to attend and care about their welfare.

They may not make the World Cup Final but I saw on Twitter Manchester United invited them to Old Trafford this season and I imagine they will get lots of other invitations to all the top clubs so they'll get to see a lot of amazing grounds and teams.

I like how the latest mention of Musk was a poster shit talking and then others follow on about how it's annoying people idolize Musk.

....

This makes no sense to me. I've been hearing how the parents weren't mad at him, and how he was asking forgiveness.
I think there's a shit ton of false or inaccurate second hand information floating around. The only real thing that matters is that the coach kept the boys alive and that now everyone is out and safe.

I raise my glass to all those that helped with the rescue, and especially to Saman Gunan. RIP.

Wow just saw this news! So happy that they all made it out alive. I was really starting to doubt everyone would make it.

Lost track of this thread for a few days, and came back to see the mod warning in the OP.

Well..it's the World Cup man. Why not both!!!

But seriously, a wonderful end to a desperate situation.

To be fair, they are footballers and they were super excited for the World Cup, and it only happens once every four years and they are way too poor to ever dream of traveling to another country to watch the finals. Some of them don't even have passports I think.

When the boys were first found one of the very first questions they asked was "How was Germany doing in the World Cup?". You can both be disappointed they won't be able to attend and care about their welfare.
You're right, I made that post right when I woke up and was joyed to see all went well but saw people mostly talking about the World Cup and went straight for that. You're right though, that would be really nice if they can. Just glad they're safe finally. :)

Sorry if I was sounding rude.

Kids walk out onto the field at the World Cup. The crowd erupts in cheers and applause.

"Wow, why are we so famous?"

"Why are you so famous? Have you been living under a rock?"

Thank goodness for a happy if bittersweet ending, as one man has died trying to help, to get all of the kids and the coach out.

A whole lot of heroes.

I am so happy that everyone has been rescued and that all the heroic individuals involved in this operation are out. It's a proud witness these people succeed in bringing those boys and the coach to safety. I'm humbled and inspired by their actions.

Hoping for the speedy recovery for the boys and the coach and that this event will not negatively impact them in life.

This has been one of the most incredible stories I've ever followed.

Trump tweeted a couple days back claiming his admin was working with the Thai government on the rescue effort. This was around the same time Musk was tweeting his musings on a sub to save the kids too, both of them interjecting themselves into the incident for no good reason.

And I don't know why the mods were banning people for even mentioning Musk in this thread. The Guardian and BBC live blogs were reporting on him, so why couldn't we? Weird.

One of those people made a submersible using the resources at the disposal of his company and delivered it to Thai authorities in the midst of the rescue operation, where it will stay if any future need arises.

You don't see the Aussie diver Richard Harris tweeting about his thoughts and experience, he just went there and did his job. As for Musk, well...

The attempted rescue of 12 boys and their soccer coach from a Thai cave has captivated the world. So when billionaire tech mogul Elon Musk announced that he was going to help, some in the tech community beamed with pride. But Musk's Thai adventure is looking more and more silly with each passing day.

Rescue chief Narongsak Osatanakorn told the BBC that "the equipment they brought to help us is not practical with our mission." Musk's idea for a "kid-sized" submarine had drawn ridicule from some quarters for its inability to navigate the tight spaces that the rescuers are encountering.

"Even though their equipment is technologically sophisticated, it doesn't fit with our mission to go in the cave," Osatanakorn said about Musk's engineering team.

The boys, aged 11-16, are all members of the Wild Boars soccer team and had been trapped in the cave since June 23rd. The flooded 2.5-mile passage curves and becomes so tight in some areas that divers are forced to carry their oxygen tanks in front of them. Given those constraints, a large tube like Musk's seems very impractical.

Eleven boys have been rescued from the cave as of 6:20am ET this morning, which means that there's just one more boy and the 25-year-old coach that still need to be extracted. A former Thai Navy SEAL diver, 38-year-old Saman Gunan died on July 6th while trying to save the team.

Musk, the founder of SpaceX and Tesla, traveled to Thailand yesterday, tweeting that he was standing by in case the Thai rescuers need him. But the rescue team has more or less said "thanks, but no thanks."

"Just returned from Cave 3," Musk tweeted yesterday. "Mini-sub is ready if needed. It is made of rocket parts & named Wild Boar after kids' soccer team. Leaving here in case it may be useful in the future."

Musk's efforts, while perhaps well-intentioned, have been met with extreme skepticism every step of the way. His attempts to brainstorm ideas on Twitter were particularly strange to some observers.

"With all due respect to Mr. Musk, I am not sure that he or his engineers have a real good handle on exactly what they're dealing with in this particular situation," Anmar Mirza from the National Speleological Society's National Cave Rescue Commission recently told Slate.

As if it wasn't a circus already, Hollywood producers are reportedly in Thailand hoping to secure rights for the story. According to the BBC, a US company called Pure Flix has sent producers Michael Scott and Adam Smith to the area.

"There's going to be other production companies coming in so we have to act pretty quickly," Smith reportedly said.

Trump and Musk both should have shut the fuck up. Musk at least had the ability to put his money to use, but grabbing the world's attention was more important to him than doing anything worthwhile. The real heroes just went there and did their job.

Not weird. People couldn't help themselves turning this thread into a fucking pissing contest between Musk Haters and acolytes. Instead of showing the bare minimum of decorum in face of the situation, they instead tried to make this thread about themselves and their fucking trivial unimportant stance on Musk.

This narcissistic shit is insulting to those that were involved with the rescue, to Saman Gunan who died. Using a thread where people are genuinely scared for the life of so many kids and adults to fight your pathetic forum wars is disgusting.

BBC profiles of the divers.

The rescuers who worked to save the group trapped in a Thai cave were a mix of international divers collaborating with Thai navy Seals.

The 12 boys and their football coach were first found by British divers but the effort to get them out was a truly global operation.

Several Thai navy divers took part in the rescue. One ex-navy diver, Saman Gunan, died in the cave last Friday.

Little information has been released about exactly who was involved and how, largely because most participants have been reluctant to talk.

It is thought that dozens of divers - Thai and foreign - were part of the efforts. Here are just some of them:

The same pattern repeats - folks crying about other people getting attention are the ones bringing those people up, then when someone comments they respond by further crying about how the wrong people are being talked about.

Maybe return to your day job of yelling for everyone to be quiet at the library.

This is incredible. I'm so happy everyone was saved, yet still feel awful that the one Thai diver died. What an emotional rollercoaster.

Amazing, just amazing. Kudos to everyone who survived and to those brave rescuers. I can't wait to see documentaries and the inevitable Hollywood adaptation in the near future. These kids will be telling quite a story to their grandchildren.

In times where all news seems to be dark and getting darker, this is so heartwarming to see. I hope nobody is traumatized too much, and RIP to the rescuer that sacrificed himself for others. But this easily could have had a much worse outcome.

Good for them.

A real "come together" moment from countries around the world to help others in need. So glad to hear the boys and the coach made it out. I admit my outlook in the beginning days were rather grim. RIP to Saman Gunan, a true hero in every way with helping those kids.

Salutes to the coach who looked after the kids, and all the Thai Navy SEALS in the rescue effort, including the one that died.

And salutes to the kids for staying strong throughout this whole ordeal.

This is kind of unbelievable given how bleak the situation looked at every turn. It's a shame that people often need a terrible catalyst like this to gather together and help one another.
