My daughter has set her sights on a Switch and after saving up and doing chores for the last 12 months, the moment of purchase has almost arrived. Of course she's looking at her gamer dad for advice, but having been in the PlayStation ecosystem exclusively since the PS1 era, I'm of course without a clue....
So I have a few Switch questions for you:

  • Is now a good time to buy or is there a price drop on the horizon?
  • Are there any essential accessories that we need to purchase?
  • What are some good, small downloadable games? She enjoys puzzle games, platformers, match 3...and she's a huge Pokémon fan.
  • There's a bundle deal with Labo at the moment. Is Labo any good?
  • Can you use multiple accounts on Switch?
    Asking for a friend.... ;-)

Thanks in advance Era!

It's still selling very well, I doubt a price drop is coming any time soon. That said, there are plenty of deals to be had for it between ebay coupons and other discounts.

You are probably all set with what's in the box until you need extra controllers to play with your daughter. The pro controller is always a good pickup.

The free pokemon quest is an easy recommend. Definitely not a real pokemon game, but something to do while you wait for the 2018 and 2019 pokemon releases. Picross S is good if she's into picross games at all.

Get in now, the odd deal will come up, but it will only shave the odd £30 or so off. No point waiting if you want one.

Get a case and screen protector. An SD card may be needed if you are buying lots of digital games, but that can come later. The pro controller is really good, but isn't essential.

Download games:

Golf Story -it's like pokemon, but with golf.
Picross could be fun if she likes picture puzzles.
Stardew Valley
Sonic Mania
Overcooked
Snakepass

Yes, you can use multiple accounts.

Not played Labo, but it looks really fun and the customer creator can be used to make a great number of things and is open to be used creatively.

  • There may be price cuts this Holiday season, especially ahead of Black Friday and Pokemon, but that apart, I don't think a drop seems likely
  • Get a Pro controller, a screen protector, and possibly a carrying case. The first two are essential
  • Get her Celeste (she can play on Accessible mode if it gets too tough)
  • Labo is very good for what it is. I don't know if it would be something she would be interested in over something like Mario Kart. How old is she? EDIT: D'oh, she's 9. yeah, I'd get her Mario Kart instead. Labo skews younger.

You might be able to save some cash with promos online (there's a 25% off all orders promo on Google Express right now) but I would be very surprised if an actual MSRP drop happened.

I would recommend a (glass) screen protector and a case. Probably another pair of Joy-Cons as well.

I don't buy digital games but Puyo Puyo Tetris is a great puzzle game that's $30 (iirc).

I'm unaware of a Labo bundle but I think it'd be really great for kids. Personally a little overpriced but still fun.

Yes, you can make multiple accounts.

Holidays are around the corner so I suggest to wait than, the Switch can use multiple accounts and ask for game recommendations I suggest Mario Kart, legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild, Mario Tennis, and Smash Bros when it comes out

There's also a bunch of great indie games like golf story, shovel knight, and shantae

- You could wait for Black Friday or one of the Ebay deals with a 10-20% discount code to get a Switch for a bit cheaper depending on when you intend to buy it. Probably no price drop this year.
- I would definitely go for some kind of screen protector, the plastic screen is prone to scratching. Try the included controllers before buying a Pro Controller, they are sufficient for some people. A micro sd card probably won't be necessary if she is mainly playing puzzle games and plattformers.
- Snipperclips, Sushi Striker (expensive though), Pokemon Quest, Celeste, maybe Captain Toad.
- No idea
- Yes (Buy Zelda!)

There will likely be a bundle this holiday season but there have been some competitive deals on eBay and googlestore. Set a slickdeals price alert.

I would purchase a memory card, screen protector (glass) and maybe a travel case if you plan to take it on the go. A pro controller is a nice addition as well as a second set of joycons.

SteamWorld Dig 2
Celeste
World of Goo

No clue on Labo.

Yes, you can use multiple accounts.

Sniiperclips is a must, great game you could play together and LABO variety would be a good call if she is in to more crafty things as well as video games. Overcooked would be another good co-op game

OP wants to play with the Switch too, so I recommended a Pro controller, also because I figured that they'd want to play some games with their daughter, and would want a second controller on hand.
Where is the hot take? Why is that term so overused and abused these days?

Grats on the purchase!

The screen protector is really a must.
A carrying case is also very nice and she has all her games in it since it has slots for them inside the case.
I bought her a pro controller but she actually prefers the joy-cons in the mount that came with the switch. My wife is now using the 2nd pro controller.

You can have up to 8 accounts on it but an account can only be active on one switch at a time so be weary of buying digital if you plan on getting a switch for yourself and sharing the games.

My seven year old daughter has her own switch and her favorite games are
Kirby
Super Mario Oddyssey
Mario Kart
Minecraft
Just dance

Kirby seems to be the favorite when playing local coop with a friend and Minecraft is her favorite to play with me. I have it on my own switch and when you want to do local switch to switch multiplayer you need two copies of the game. The same goes for Mario Kart.

You can of course play these in split screen too but we're having a lot of fun playing local switch to switch.. My wife also has one and joins in from time to time.

Just dance is very popular when there are several friends in the house but you need more than one set of joy-cons for that. We also have that on the PS4 where it is using the camera so it's a bit easier than the switch.

If you want to use the Switch too buy a screen portector, a pro controller (the Xeno 2 edition is supposed to be the most high quality version) and a 128+GB micro SD.

Micro SD card, how big is dependent on all the game you plan to do digitally. Just do a 200GB fromthe get-go and should be fine. Also allows for a lot of screen grabs and video grabs.

Small games I recommend...
  • Picross
  • Party Golf (crazy game for the whole family)
  • Yonder - my gf is hooked on this game. Open world, crafting, building farms, making friends with all the cute critters, explore, etc...ZERO combat
  • Stardew Valley
  • Puyo Puyo Tetris
  • SnipperClips
Also, Captain Toad comes out this week. GET IT!

There are a number of demos on the eShop to check out. Just go to search and they have an option to search for all demos.

Also consider buying Splatoon 2 + Octo Expansion for you and your daughter. The game is very kid friendly both in aestethics and online functionality (she won't get bullied) and I know many kids that love the game.

Octo Expansion is a collection of some of the best level design Nintendo has ever made, and as many on this forum will tell you it's not an exaggeration.

I don't feel I personally overuse it, you're free to call me out if I do though. At least you bothered to clarify one of your reasonings, that makes more sense! Still don't see how 9 year old is too old for Labo tho.

It's Era in general, not you specifically.

My understanding is Labo is meant for 4-6 year olds most of all, where you get into arts and crafts and creating things. Basically the prime Lego age so to say. The appeal of it would be the most for that age group. A 9 year old has begun to outgrow that already, and I presume, based on the fact that she likes games like Pokemon and Animal Crossing, wants an involved and engaging video game experience. Labo's genius is in the actual DIY aspect, not the game part, so I figured she would get bored of it after a few rounds, while something like Mario Kart or Odyssey would hold her attention over the long run.

Another thing PintSizedSlasher

I strongly recommend the Nintendo Parental app to keep an eye on time used (and set limits if nessasary) and to limit access to the eshop and violent games. You can fine tune what you want and do not want to limit using the "custom" setting, for instance you might want to allow chat in a game but not posting to social media and such.

Make two nintendo accounts, one for you and one for your daughter and connect it to your account.

Welcome, friend. I'll try to answer these all in order.

  • No price drop is on the horizon. The Canadian pricing dropped by $20 last month but there's no rumors of a revision or price drop imminent.
  • Essential accessories should be a screen protector, both to protect it from your daughter but also because some dock rubbers scratch the screen (it's dumb I know). Also invest in a travel case for packing it away for trips and such.
  • Good downloadable games that fit the genres she likes would be:
    • Battle Chef Brigade
    • Puyo Puyo Tetris
    • Pokémon Quest
    • Shovel Knight (might be difficult for her though)
    • Runner 3
    • Rayman Legends
    • Super Mario Odyssey
    • Captain Toad
  • Labo is a fun weekend project with your kid that'll end up in the recycle bin within a few weeks. I'd avoid it.
  • Switch supports up to 8 accounts.

  • Is now a good time to buy or is there a price drop on the horizon? - nothing is rumored, I would expect (at best) a few end of year (Black Friday) bundles.
  • Are there any essential accessories that we need to purchase? - a screen protector, and a case if she intends ever taking it out of the house (e.g on a family trip). Also, since she is a huge Pokemon fan, pre-order her the pokeball, who knows if it will be available or not when she actually wants it in November.
  • There's a bundle deal with Labo at the moment. Is Labo any good? A definite yes from me, as long as she enjoys things like knex and/or lego. Replay value is not really there in the long run, but the journey is more than worth it imo. I played it with my 15 and 22 year old daughters, and they both really enjoyed it. Hours of family fun.
  • Can you use multiple accounts on Switch? Yes, and you can move them back and forth between Switches, just at this stage without the save files (cloud saves are coming September though).

I understood Labo to be for children of all ages, with different enjoying coming at more ages due to customisation options.

Taken from Nintendo Soup:

"According to the official Nintendo Labo website, a child should be at least 6 years old in order to make a Toy-Con. If the child is between ages 6 to 9, they should be accompanied by someone older such as an older sibling or parent to guide them through the building process.

Nintendo suggests children age 10 and up will be able to build Nintendo Labo on their own without much difficulty."

That makes sense. Even so, given the general comments about Labo's lack of relayability (so to say), some even in this thread, I'd recommend something like Mario/Kart over it.

Check out the new Pokemon bundle that comes with game + a functional Pokeball later this year. Should be exactly what she likes.

Also Splatoon 2 might be a good choice I think.

I really like the way they handle multiple accounts. My goddaughter has an account on my Switch, and all she has to do is start a game, tell it she's the one playing, and it just loads up her save and goes. No fiddling with anything, no signing in and out or any of that. It's easy and it works.

Captain Toad comes out Friday. Was great on the Wii U, the demo on Switch looks and plays great!

As for Labo, having built all the projects myself, unless your 4-6 year old is unusually enterprising and super dexterous, and can read, there's no way it's happening for that age. It's not like Lego where a 4-6 year old can pick up some basic projects/kits.

8-12 is the real "discovery" age range for Labo, everyone younger is waiting hours just to play for it for a few minutes, and everyone older is doing it to have an authentic "make" experience. And it does provide an authentic "make" experience, everything just remarkably works.

Agree. Both offer different experiences, and Mario Kart definitely offers great value for money and a fun experience for all. Labo seems to require a larger time commitment to get more out of it. Mario/Mario Kart are pick up and play.

Check slickdeals.net every now and then. I've seen deals to get a Switch at around $220 lately.

I've saved so much money using that site. I snagged two sets of joycons from walmart for $25 a piece last week.

1. Buy now. Every now and then you can find quick lightning deals through Google, Target, Ebay, or even through Nintendo (for refurbished units) that might save you about $25, but there is no official price drop coming ANY time soon.
2. You'll probably want a Pro Controller, but that's an extra $80. Still it's an extra controller for you and your fam, and it's one that you may prefer to use for a lot of games. You may also want the HORI play stand to make handheld mode more enjoyable. A screen protector is also highly, HIGHLY recommended, especially since this is for your daughter. These are the best, and super easy to apply. For long trips an external batter is also great to have.
3. Steamworld Dig 2, Mario Odyssey, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Captain Toad, Snipperclips, Pokemon Quest, Pinball FX3, Super Beat Sports, Kirby Star Allies, Puyo Puyo Tetris, and Overcooked are all games you guys would probably love, and most of those you can play together!
4. Labo would be GREAT for you guys to do together, yes!
5. Yes, you sure can.

Yup, i figured the Pro controller would be more for the OP :)

Being honest, the joycons in the comfort grip is pretty much fine. I had the pro controller on my shopping list pre-buying, now I realise I don't need it at all. EDIT: if you buy an extra set of joycons, these do NOT come with the comfort grip, you'll have to grab that yourself. The official one is by PowerA and is a wee bit different to the out of the box one.

On Labo - I'm buying the robot one for my 4 and 9 year old for Christmas. It looks a right laugh! Recommend checking out the video of this, she may fancy stomping through a city, turning into a tank, shooting down the odd UFO...

Pokemon - it is a hefty outlay but I've slapped out £135 on the game and 2 Pokeballs. Really looking forward to being the co-op companion to my niblets.

On other games:

Kirby. There is a demo of this and my 9 y.o. found it a great laugh. It is a co-op game, so you can play together.

Go Vacation. Co-operative sports fun in a Wii Sports style.

Minecraft. Because Minecraft. You can split screen it, which is nice.

Mario Kart. The various driving assists really help the game become accessible to all, making it an awesome family game.

Mario Odyssey. For platforming obviousness.

Rayman. Another title with a demo, you can gauge the love for platforming with that.

Captain Toad. A platformer without jumping! It is a budget title too, but looks charming. I had a go on the demo and I can imagine it would visually delight a 9 year old. My 4 year old got very excited by the dragon.

Sonic Mania. It's Sonic.

I want to recommend Stardew Valley, but I've not played it. It looks charming though. There are a few recommendations for Golf Story here but the appeal for that will go as far as her love to play a game with a golfing mechanic at its core.

Blue/Red joycons with Green/Pink joycon extra pair. Because they look awesome.
