Wow this game looks good on Switch, handheld mode. I basically bought the hardware due to this game and watching videos of the demo. It looked incredible on a big screen but I didnt like the low detail pixel format of the characters, especially the playable ones. But I thought...I bet it looks great handheld mode - and it does! Its stunning. Zelda has so much detail that I only want to play that on the TV, but octo looks fantastic in handheld mode.

They're mostly there to keep track of how fucked up the pacing is.

Since when long games are bad? Most of the time is the opposite in JRPGs. LOL

People like timers to know how long they've played for, it gives them a sense of pride to know how long they've played for, when it really probably should give them a sense of shame for wasting so much time.

More than that it gives you an indication where are you in the game.

If you play 30 hours of Xenoblade Chronicles 2, you saw nothing. Even if you rush to finish the game, you are maybe at 50%, maybe.

Like i said, brace yourself for the usual "i played 20 hours of this game and now i'm going to review it and tell you how bad it is" lol

I had no problems with it since it was intentional.

There are story heavy chapters, and others more quiet that allow you to complete side quests, to grind,... It's not a game designed to be rushed, for speedrunners.
Personally after playing Persona 5, the pacing of Xenoblade 2 was a thousand times better.

Sometimes you just want to talk about a game you like/love with people who feel the same.
Probably the shouldn't try using a forum for that.

What if they just didn't like it? Does it make their opinion invalid? Because they didn't find enough substance to put in the hours that someone who did like it.

BD never clicked with me for some reason. I just gave up at some point. I hated the world map when the game is really mostly linear.

I also found the characters mostly irritating. Especially the womanizing asshole.

The story was also a confusing mess of nonsense.

At some point the game got tedious and I quit

I hope octopath is different. I enjoyed the demo.

Cant wait for this one.. I hope we get more games that look like this. When is the review embargo up?

Sucks that I cant play it until Saturday, a fäkking Cannibal Corpse concert in the way :S

Stealth is a Switch shill who is trying to discredit people and ERA in general to appeal to the lowest common denominator. He has never been worth anyone's time. Terrible person all around

He should fit right in here then? hue hue hue

I kid I kid..

Played more of the demo yesterday and really enjoyed it. Ended up completing the first chapters of the story for Cyrus, Tressa and Olberic. Was really sad to hit the time limit. Can't wait for Friday

ya, without an overarching story that ties everyone together is a huge bummer imo,
it does not necessary to be a god or evil king but everyone working together to accomplish a goal is better than none.
I am still getting this game, just not that hyped anymore lol.

and everyone saying XC2 is terrible but personally it is my 3rd GOTY of 2017, and Persona 5 is a terrible JRPG. :p

Nintendo is publishing it, but never say never.
But I think it is safe to say "not for the foreseeable future."
I mean sure there is a chance, but it seems doubtful!

Most likely, Nintendo has potentially paid good money to keep Octopath Traveler a permanent exclusive. More importantly, though, the division of Square Enix that is developing the game is focused on only working on Nintendo Switch titles for the foreseeable future. Also, this game is coming from the same minds behind the Bravely Default series, a noteworthy JRPG series that is only ever been on the Switch's predecessor, 3DS.

Game Informer recently got to talk with Square at a press event about Octopath Traveler, and the executive they were talking with had an interesting tidbit of news. Tomoya Asano, division executive at Square, said that the company has established a Switch division in April, and that the sales of Octopath Traveler will be used to judge how much support the company will give in the future. Here's what was said:

Square Enix has decided that it wants to focus on original titles for the Switch.
"If Octopath Traveler does well and this is something that appeals to fans, we want to focus on Switch. Please pick up the Switch if you want to play games like Octopath Traveler."

In addition to this, Asano also confirmed that there are more large projects on the way to Switch, though he wouldn't say what's being worked on. Here's what he said:

"There are several other titles that we're currently working on for Switch. If you could just wait a bit longer, we'll work with Nintendo and announce them in the future."

Very interesting tidbit regarding that last section about "sales determining future support for SE's Switch division". I expect sales to blow their expectations out of the water and am excited to see what this might mean for the division's growth

But on the other hand i don't think you're forced to play all 8 stories in one run.

You can pick just 2-3-4 stories with an adequate level of grinding.

From what I can say so far, if you built a crew of - say - 5 characters and went and did their stories, you'd find the levels you'd need to be before progressing to be kinda out of reach without some PROPER grinding. Like, hardcore, unfun, re-running the same areas for an hour at a time levels of grinding.

It'd be more fun and you'd get more out of your time just by doing another character's branch. That make sense?

Just finished my time with the demo and recruited Cyrus before the 3 hour mark. Cyrus is super good y'all. His Scrutinize ability can help you find hidden items in the town and his ability to study the enemy to find a weakness is pretty awesome if you want a fight to end. His Black Magic is also pretty strong wiping out groups of enemies. Haven't done his story chapter yet but will do when I get this! Also H'iannt capturing skeletons of humans and using them to attack enemies is pretty great.

As far as preview stuff, I listened to the 5by5 podcast where they had Dan Ryckert from Giant Bomb as a guest and he's been playing Octopath too (Go to 34:08 for Octopath Talk). He has an early copy and for someone who isn't deep into JRPG's, he's having a blast with it. Makes me feel better about getting this since I'm also not a big JRPG guy but I REALLY want to play Octopath.

It is insane how Octopath Traveler blew up since the Prologue demo. Sales wise I think 1.5 million sold.

No new prodcuts really scratching that turn-based RPG itch on Switch right now I guess? Lots of expectation on it, especially after 3DS was one of the best places to be as a JRPG fan

A game doesn't sell because there is nothing in the same genre releasing right now.

One might even add that since there is not a lot of turn-based JRPGs yet, the audience might still not be there.

No if the game does well it is on its own merit, the first demo took a lot of us by surprise with a beautiful artstyle, stellar music, interesting gameplay and engaging characters. They managed to cultivate the momentum until now quite well too.

1.5m for a JRPG would be a huge achievement, especially for a new IP.

Gamefaqs poll about starting character - decent spread to be honest.

Interesing. What's the rational for Therion?

Characters don't level up when not in party. Olberic and H'annit have to use their duel mechanic in their quests (you have to do a couple of fights without your party), if you don't want to have to farm up those characters when doing their quest it might be a good idea to always have them in the party

Ringabell? Whaaaaat? He was the best character. But it was not any more linear or less linear than most jrpgs. Pretty much all rpgs are linear unless you are playing an open world one like Elder Scrolls as most rpgs follow a traditional campaign, with side quests being the diversion from the path.
