No no no no no no no no NO!

I've posted my disdain before, but why are we regresssing? What about the handicapped (see some of the other threads if not in the know)? This only helps create more waste as far as I'm concerned because now I gotta buy straws in lower bulk numbers, which means more packaging wasted in the long run.

This is progression not regression. It's about time we finally started taking steps to stop ruining the earth. I always find it amazing how people are willing to place convenience over everything else even if it literally means destroying the planet.

Are you disabled? How about not using the blight of others for your own gain. If disabled people need straws they can still get them. That doesn't mean the millions or even billions of other people still need them.

Straws are actually healthier for you since the sugar liquid has less contact with your teeth.

They should have included paper straws with all cups but hey, people like to read 'save the earth' instead of 'corporation saves millions of dollars in straw expenses.'

Why do you need straw for ice coffee?

And honestly, they can just save the plastic straws for those who need them but for the rest of us, either the sippy lid or the paper/compostible straw

Anyone do the calculations on amount of trees is going to take to produce that many straws a year? Are they going to source from a sustainable place/plant?

Pretty much all paper is produced with sustainable tree farming. Deforestation is largely an issue of agriculture and housing development.

Man that sounds like such a pain in the ass. I as a CUSTOMER need to REQUEST something in order to get it? UGH I don't have time for this shit. Why don't they just waste more shit and automatically give everyone something they don't need and that they'll just throw out!!

But you wont request it, most people wont. And thus, by the time youre 50 you'll have that gross caffeine teeth that old people have :p

I'm keeping my straws thanks. But please feel free to attack plastic waste in commerce and industry in places where it actually makes a difference.

also, metal straws....do they accumulate tiny bits of food matter?

Only if you don't use the cleaning brush that most come with I guess, I always wash mine with the brush and I've never noticed any food bits.

I'm not against the move (anything that helps the environment is good in my books) but I hate using paper straws. The feeling of the paper in my mouth sends shivers down my spine.

I assume they would collect bits of food at about the same rate as silverware and other cutlery. Which is to say, probably not, and it's likely that the chemicals used in mass producing plastic one-time-use straws would likely be negligible or worse for us than microscopic food particles that could collect on a straw.

This might defeat the purpose of giving up one one-time-use plastic for another (or, 'few time use'). Running your straw in the dishwasher or with hot water in the sink would be fine. There's not likely to be anymore food matter on a straw as there would be, like, on your hands when you rub your eyes or pick your nose.

There is biodegradable plastic. Not sure why companies don't push more into this direction. From natural sources as well.

Edit: Oh it actually mentions them in the OP.

My daughters Girl Scout troop have been against straws for a few years now and my wife carries around a bag of stainless steel straws. They use them even when we go to the movies.
